Which genres of rock/pop music have not aged well?

Listening to some Syd-Barrett era Pink Floyd this morning, it struck me how fresh and modern those records sound today. On the other hand, some styles of rock music now sound decidedly dated.

Much American psychedelic rock of the late 1960s now sounds very naive, with the chemicals consumed being mixed with Utopian political idealism. The British psychedelic music of that time, though, had a more child-like, dreamy quality which seems to transcend time. There was also a healthy dose of English eccentricity built in, too, with songs about village greens, cups of tea and cricket on the lawn. The music made by Floyd, The Beatles, Small Faces etc still holds up pretty well today.

What about the New Romantic music of the early 1980s? The New Wave music of that era (Squeeze, Elvis Costello etc) has aged much better because it was based on great songwriting and not style over substance.

Which other types of music have aged well, and which have not?

Proto-punk and early punk still works pretty good. MC5 and The Stooges still work well because of bands like The Hellacopters and a lot of underground bands. The style Television and the Velvet Underground is kept fresh because of The Strokes.

I for one thinks that Pink Floyd sounds very 70's and aged, and not really timeless at all.

Early hardcore punk. Stuff like Black Flag, Bad Brains and Minor Threat. I like Black Flag, but those bands all sound completely 80's

Most electro-pop from the 1980s and early-90s sounds very dated indeed.

I am listening to mid 80s Accept at the moment. The "German AC/DC" due to Udo Dierkschneiders voice is absolutely timeless to me, at least that 1980-1985 era before David Reece

Yes, proto-punk still sounds relevant because it is based on the building blocks of rock n roll, namely rhythm and blues.

When referring to Pink Floyd, I was thinking more of the Syd Barrett era, i.e. 1967-68, rather than their later work.

Some of the "confessional" singer/songwriter stuff from the early 1970s (particularly James Taylor) sounds a bit ropey to modern ears, too.

80's hair metal/glam rock is just awful nowadays and they all dress like they've lost a bet.

All proper rock music has been dormant for approximately 2 decades.

This.

Wolfmother has certainly been giving it the old college try, though.

I do not agree on that proper rock "has been dormant for approximately 2 decades".

I do agree on that Wolfmother is a great retro rock band.
