Ferrari seem fast. But are they really, and can they last 90 minutes without screwing things up?

Max Verstappen is ahead again this time. The emphasis is on Verstappen, not Red Bull. Sergio Perez drives where Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren and Aston Martin drive. Desperate suggestion from the paddock: "Can't you give (Max) him a few sleeping pills?"

I couldnt help but notice that Max seemed to have little problem setting purples in sector 1 and 2 at will, yet mysteriously not be able to nail S3 as well..... to the extent on the last day that a poor S3 time eroded his S1 and S2 advantages.:suspicious:

Did the tyres suddenly go off in the last sector? Not likely. More likely Max kept getting cramp in his throttle pedal leg. :wow:
I see Fernando holds no punches with his comment after.....

“I think 19 drivers in the paddock now will think they will not win the championship,” he said.

“It happens 99 per cent of the time in your career. This is a brutal sport.” :whistling:

Some random stuff...:

F1 has attempted a corrected order using F1-estimated data to 'theoretical' tyre-corrected times.

Clever people with knowledge and computers have put together an estimate real world lap time per team, tyre corrected and based on believed weight, fuel load and engine modes.

Guess who comes out on top.

Times by team — F1 estimate

1. Red Bull Racing: 1m 30.595s

2. Ferrari: +0.226s

3. McLaren: +0.380s

4. Mercedes: +0.571s

5. RB: +0.734s

6. Aston Martin: +0.852s

7. Alpine: +1.042s

8. Sauber: +1.051s

9. Williams: +1.123s

10. Haas: +1.323s

That's what Helmut said after first day of testing - we are about 0,3 [sec] ahead. The guy knows his stuff. The gap is good for RBR to start a season, but for how long? It may be different from last year.

I also understand that Red Bull have two specs of sidepods, one with larger cooling inlets for hot areas and one that has not yet been used on track, with smaller cooling inlets for cooler zones.

The bad news is that the hot weather setup as used in Bahrain is slower that the cool zone set up. Obviously with the airflow anything directed to cooling is airflow lost to creating downforce, thus the cooler track smaller inlets allows more air diverted for downforce purposes = more aero grip.

In other words the performance we have seen in Bahrain is the lowest side pod spec for performance. Get to a cooler circuit with less cooling air required then the more air usable for downforce means they will likely be in a different post code to the rest.

Clever bloke that Newey.
