Yes it is this weekend.

The FIA World Endurance Championship will visit the legendary Autodromo Nazionale di Monza later this week for the WEC 6 Hours of Monza (7-9 July), as the fight for the 2023 endurance racing titles heats up across all three categories.

With Ferrari AF Corse winning round four of FIA WEC, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Hypercar battle has intensified as Ferrari is closing on category leaders Toyota who are now just 18 points ahead in the overall standings. However, the LMP2 title fight is even closer as a mere four points separate Team WRT and recent Le Mans winners Inter Europol Competition.

Thirty-six cars will tackle the 5.793-kilometre Autodromo Nazionale di Monza or 'the temple of speed' which is famed for its long high-speed straights where Hypercars reach speeds in the region of 318kph and nearly 60% of the lap is traveled with a fully-open throttle. During each tour of the circuit, Hypercar drivers will shift gears 36 times.

Marking the first time that the Ferrari 499P Hypercar will be raced competitively at Monza and coupled with the Ferrari's emphatic victory at the recent 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 'Tifosi' will be out in force later this week! Moreover, 12 of the 108 drivers competing at Monza will be Italian and there are six Ferraris on the entry list (two Ferrari 499P Hypercars and four Ferrari 488 GTE Evos).

We have the customer Proton Weathertech Porsche 963 joining the outright ranks....

ADDITIONAL HYPERCAR ENTRY WITH PROTON COMPETITION

The Hypercar line-up for Monza will equal the same number of Hypercars seen at Spa-Francorchamps with a total of 13 entries. The extra Cadillac from Spa will be replaced with a brand-new entry: a privately-run Proton Competition Porsche 963.

The No. 99 Proton Competition entry will bring the total tally of Porsche 963s to four as it joins the two factory-run Porsche Penske Motorsport cars (No. 5 and No. 6), as well as the Hertz Team JOTA run Porsche. Driving the new Proton entered Porsche will be home driver, Rome-born Gianmaria Bruni, a two-time LMGTE Pro World Champion. Bruni will be joined by 2016 FIA WEC World Champion Neel Jani and double Le Mans class winner Harry Tincknell. The team will travel to Monza without testing the car so will aim to use the Italian WEC round as a chance to get to grips with the new machinery.

There will be three further Italian drivers in the Hypercar category for the home fans – and all will be racing for Ferrari AF Corse. Antonio Fuoco, who has secured pole on two occasions already this season, will compete in the No. 50 Ferrari 499P Hypercar. Fellow countrymen Alessandro Pier Guidi and Antonio Giovinazzi will drive the sister No. 51 car, the same machine which made its memorable Le Mans victory alongside Britain's James Calado last month.

Toyota Gazoo Racing and its pair of Toyota GR010 Hybrid Hypercars have already won three out of four WEC races this season but after a narrow defeat at Le Mans, the Japanese squad will be eager to get their 2023 title fight back on course with another victory. Among drivers, it is the crew of the No. 8 Toyota GR010 Hybrid (Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley, Ryō Hirakawa) that has a slender 15 point lead over the No. 51 Ferrari.

Behind Toyota and Ferrari, Cadillac has confirmed its position as the third force in the Hypercar field. A major asset of the V-Series.R, its reliability has seen the brand take two podiums in the WEC already this season. In the Hypercar drivers’ standings, it’s the No. 2 car driven by Alex Lynn, Earl Bamber and Richard Westbrook who are currently third – 12 points adrift of Ferrari.

After a strong showing at Le Mans last month which saw the French manufacturer lead the race at one point, Peugeot TotalEnergies will be in Italy with two of their Peugeot 9X8 Hypercars. The team are fifth in the standings, 19 points behind Porsche who occupy fourth place.

American-flagged Glickenhaus Racing will be looking to replicate its strong performance from Monza last year with the No. 708 Glickenhaus 007 Hypercar driven by Romain Dumas, Olivier Pla and Nathanael Berthon. Completing the entry list in Hypercar will be Floyd Vanwall Racing where Tristan Vautier has replaced Tom Dillmann in the Vanwall Vandervell 680.

LMP2 BATTLE RAGES BUT WILL CORVETTE BE BEATEN IN LMGTE AM?

In LMP2, home support will be strong for Italian-flagged Prema Racing and its resident driver Andrea Caldarelli who has been drafted in to replace Mirko Bortolotti for this race. Other changes in LMP2 include Giedo Van der Garde and Ben Hanley subbing for United Autosport’s regular drivers Felipe Albuquerque and Tom Blomqvist who are on IMSA race duty.

Just four points split the two front-runners in LMP2 going into Monza with Team WRT leading Inter Europol Competition in second place. United Autosports sit third, 20 points behind category leaders WRT.

Meanwhile, Corvette Racing has a commanding lead in LMGTE Am with the team having amassed 133 points so far (thanks to three victories and one second place finish). The battle for second and third place, however, is much closer with only three points separating second-placed ORT by TF and the all-female crew of Iron Dames in third position.

Notable changes in LMGTE Am include Efrin Castro and Guilherme Moura de Oliveira driving for Project 1 – AO plus Julien Piguet in the No. 21 AF Corse entry. Meanwhile, in the No. 57 Kessel Racing car, Daniel Serra will be replaced by Japan’s Kei Cozzolino. Finally, Northwest AMR will sit this race out but have noted their intention to return for WEC 6 Hours of Fuji at the start of September. There are seven Italian drivers competing in GTE Am (Francesco Castellacci; Davide Rigon; Matteo Cairoli; Claudio Schiavoni; Matteo Cressoni; Alessio Rovera and Riccardo Pera).

The on-track action is set to kick off on Friday 7 July with Qualifying taking place on Saturday afternoon. The flag for the 6 hour race will be waved at 12h30 on Sunday by the event’s official Grand Marshal, Dindo Capello.

Great to see some more customer cars coming out. Would be nice if some of the other manufacturers had some as well.

Should be a great race :).

Peugeot Sets FP3 Pace as Vergne Beats Fuoco

Very happy to see Peugeot top the time sheets in FP3. Faster times than Toyota managed in FP2 is a good sign that it might be for real
Peugeot set the pace in an FIA World Endurance Championship practice session for the first time this season as Jean-Eric Vergne beat Ferrari’s Antonio Fuoco by 0.045 seconds.

The No. 93 Peugeot 9X8 went quickest overall courtesy of a 1:35.878 lap time from Vergne, who traded the top spot with Fuoco in the early stages of the 60-minute session.

Fuoco was the first driver to dip under the 1m 36s threshold in Free Practice 3 but Vergne responded by narrowly beating the No. 50 Ferrari 499P after 10 minutes.

It marked the first time since last season’s Bahrain finale that Peugeot had topped a Free Practice session in the WEC, at the site of its Hypercar debut 12 months ago.

Gustavo Menezes anchored the French manufacturer’s strong Saturday morning showing by finishing third in the teammate No. 94 car with a time of 1:36.105.

Antonio Giovanzzi, driving the No. 51 Ferrari, briefly eclipsed Menezes at one stage but the Italian had the lap time deleted due to a track limits breach at the exit of Ascari.

Giovinazzi swiftly produced a clean lap to go fourth, while Alex Lynn made an improvement just after halfway to put LMDh manufacturer Cadillac in fifth, just over half a second off the pace.

Porsche 963 customers Proton Competition and Hertz Team JOTA were fifth and sixth, with the latter briefly stopping at the end of the pit lane at the start of the session due to low fuel pressure readings.

Toyota Gazoo Racing only managed eighth and 11th after claiming first and third during FP2 on Friday. The best of the factory Penske Porsches ended up in ninth.

Pietro Fittipaldi set the fastest lap in the LMP2 class, reeling off a time of 1:39.621 in the JOTA Oreca 07 Gibson.

Fittipaldi, who hit the top of the timesheets early and remained there throughout, beat Vector Sport driver Gabriel Aubry by two-tenths of a second.

There were problems for the No. 31 WRT from Team WRT, which spent time in the garage due to an apparent engine-related issue that caused a lack of power.

The lead changed multiple times in GTE-Am and it was Matteo Cairoli who ended up quickest for Porsche outfit Team Project 1-AO.

Having been the early pace-setter, the Italian produced a 1:46.762 with 13 minutes to go, improving on previous benchmarks set by Lilou Wadoux and Mikkel Pedersen.

FP3 was the first session this weekend to have no Full Course Yellow interruptions.

Will Toyota put it all together in qualy? It would make it more interesting if they didnt but, hey they were beaten at Le Mans so......
Personally I would love to see Peugeot on pole , if only as a reward for their commitment.

Qualifying for the 6 Hours of Monza gets underway at 2:40 p.m. CEST (8:40 a.m. EDT). I think that is in about 40 minutes time.

RESULTS: Free Practice 3

Sadly no Peugeot Pole in Monza 6hr qualifying.........

Kobayashi lands Toyota pole ahead of Ferrari

Toyota driver Kamui Kobayashi edged out Ferrari’s Antonio Fuoco for pole position ahead of this weekend’s Monza round of the World Endurance Championship.
Kobayashi claimed the top spot in qualifying by just over one hundredth of a second aboard the #7 Toyota GR010 HYBRID Le Mans Hypercar, in a closely fought session in which the top three cars were separated by a tenth.

A 1m35.358s from Kobayashi compared with Fuoco’s 1m35.375s in the #50 Ferrari 499P LMH, while Brendon Hartley was just behind on a 1m35.480s in the second of the Toyotas. Peugeot driver Jean-Eric Vergne was a further two tenths behind courtesy of 1m35.662s, which left him only three tenths off the pace in the fastest of the French manufacturer’s 9X8 LMHs.

Alex Lynn took fifth for Cadillac with a 1m35.720s aboard the Ganassi-run V-Series.R LMDh. He was run close by the second of the AF Corse-run factory Ferraris, which posted a 1m35.771s in Antonio Giovinazzi’s hands. Gustavo Menezes took seventh in the second Peugeot, while Frederic Makowiecki was the fastest Porsche 963 LMDh driver in eighth.

The top nine cars in Hypercar down to Yifei Ye in the Jota Porsche were all within one second at the end of the 15-minute session.

WRT's Robert Kubica took a first WEC pole position in LMP2.
Pietro Fittipaldi took second position in his Jota ORECA with a 1m39.707s, while Phil Hanson made a late improvement to third with a 1m39.790s in the best of the United Autosports entries.

Sarah Bovy took her second GTE Am pole position of the season for the all-female Iron Dames Porsche squad.
A 1m47.632s gave her the top spot in the Iron Lynx-run Porsche 911 RSR by four tenths over Ahmad Al Harthy, who got down to a 1m48.058s in the ORT by TF Aston Martin Vantage GTE. Christian Ried was less than a tenth further back in third position aboard the solo Dempsey-Proton Porsche .

Race starts at 12:30 pm local time.

Points-Leading Toyota Loses Fourth in Post-Race Penalty
The Hypercar world championship-leading No. 8 Toyota GR010 Hybrid has lost its fourth-place finish at the 6 Hours of Monza due to a post-race penalty totaling 50 seconds.

The car driven by Brendon Hartley, Sebastien Buemi and Ryo Hirakawa was found to have exceeded its maximum power output of 507 kW on the 190th lap of Sunday’s race.

A stewards’ report stated that a stop-and-go penalty of five seconds plus an additional 45 seconds was added to the Toyota’s final race time after it committed two offenses.

The extra 45 seconds is based on a rule from the WEC that all stop-and-go sanctions not taken before the end of the race will receive time added on.

The penalty has provisionally dropped the No. 8 Toyota to sixth position and promoted the No. 5 Penske Porsche 963 of Frederic Makowiecki, Michael Christensen and Dane Cameron to fourth.

It has also moved the No. 51 Ferrari 499P driven by Antonio Giovinazzi, Alessandro Pier Guidi and James Calado into the top five.

That provisionally undoes the points gain that the No. 8 Toyota crew made on the Ferrari AF Corse trio and reduces the margin between the two lineups to 23 points.

Hartley, Buemi and Hirakawa would have left Monza with a 29-point lead without the penalty, which is not open to appeal.

Additionally, the No. 51 Ferrari drivers would have dropped behind the race-winning Toyota lineup of Kamui Kobayashi, Mike Conway and Brendon Hartley, until the Japanese manufacturer’s other car was penalized. Those two crews are now level on points.
