23 January 2023, 4:26 PM
The 21-kilometre-long Nordschleife is set to benefit from an 11 million Euro investment in state-of-the-art digital communications, HD trackside cameras and safety warning systems.
The systems are envisaged to be in use for racing, manufacturer testing, and for the ‘tourist lap’ sessions for the general public with the systems due to be fully in place from the start of 2025.
The new systems are designed to monitor the entire racetrack using camera technology and artificial intelligence.
Construction work is already underway and is one of the most extensive construction projects in the almost 100-year history of the Nürburgring.
A completely new infrastructure will be built around the 21-kilometre racetrack over the next two years.
Storm-proof masts for HD cameras are already being erected. At the same time, earthworks for laying the fibre optic and power cables are taking place along the entire length of the circuit.
In addition, self-contained off-grid systems for the power supply are to be set up and LED panels for digital warning signals will be installed.
The full circuit programme follows on from a pilot programme over the past two years covering the 2.8-kilometre section of the Nordschleife between the Galgenkopf and the Grand Prix track giving project staff valuable data and experience with the IT suite, developed by the Fujitsu Group which uses artificial intelligence (AI).
The AI is intended to recognise dangers, accidents or other unscheduled events on the route and to support the operations centre in taking immediate action.
In the future, it will automatically warn following traffic of dangerous spots via the trackside LED warning panels.
In addition to the established procedure of radio reports by the marshals, in the future all images and information will be collected directly in the operations centre via around 50 kilometres of fibre optic cable aiding a more rapid and better informed response to any incident.
