New FIA President

#1

Post by Star »

Just saw the below on twitter:
Andrew Benson
@andrewbensonf1
Former rally driver Mohammed Ben Sulayem has been elected FIA president, the first non-European to hold the role. He stood on a platform of making motorsport more accessible but takes the helm of an FIA in crisis following the controversy of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
Good luck to him, I really mean that because I think he's going to need it. He's coming in at a time which is going to be difficult to say the least and he's brand new to the job and the teams. Where on earth is he going to start? Jean Todt has got out of having to sort this one out quite neatly hasn't he?

So what do you think his first job as the new president will be? Sacking Michael Masi? Trying to placate Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton? Making up a new list of satefy car regulations that suits everyone? (Good luck on that one).

Rather him than me is all I can say!

I seem to remember Mohammed Ben Sulayem being on one of the Havoc videos 20+ years ago, having a rally accident? I think his name has been involved in the DIRT series of racing games as well at some point in the past 10 years.

And presumably this is the same guy too:

I will admit, I know nothing of this man. I suppose time will tell how good he is at the job and whether we like the direction he is going to take F1 in. He will need some time to get up to speed I guess, he has that given the season has just ended.

I sort of agree with what he's saying, except... "regardless of ability"? So you should be able to race even if you have no talent whatsoever?

That was my initial thought when I read it last night..... but then realised he must be talking of ability in a disability context (if that makes sense)

Of course. How else do you expect pay drivers get into F1?

That would make sense, except drivers with disabilities were already mentioned as being "promoted" under Jean Todt's rule. I guess he could mention them twice.
