That is even more retro than my ban wings suggestion. Might make it worthwhile to bring a riding mechanic along though.

What about spare wheels carried with the cars; if they're going to change the wheels all by themselves, there's no need to crawl back to the pits in case they puncture halfway through the lap = lots of precious time saved!!

Sadly with the driver coaching over the radio, they pretty much already have somebody on hand to fix most of life's problems!
