The Eagle has long been one of my favorite cars. (I voted even though I don't play GPL).

Another.... What's that to do with the price of butter?
(I voted too but I didn't know we had to play GPL to do so.... Are we in trouble...? )

The only reason I mentioned GPL is because I knew there would be bias from the voters. (Perhaps to the point where I expected there to be no votes for any cars besides the 1967 and 1965 / 1969 seasons for which there are mods).

From the first post...
I guess we can vote anyway, but it seems like PTRacer made this thread just for the GPL players and maybe also the Flat Earthers.

Oh, I see. I didn't glean a restricton from the subject and subsequent post...
"This is a very tough one, I know.
For GPL lovers, we have so many to choose from, between the 1965 and 1969 seasons. There are also sometimes winged and non-winged variants of the same car.
Anyway, as with the 1950s Grand Prix car thread, there are no set rules. Just vote for the car you like the best."
nor from, "the 1950s Grand Prix car thread", no mention of GPL.....
"For the winter period, I will be starting a new series where we vote for our favourite Grand Prix cars from each decade.
The criteria is 100% down to you - Speed, beauty, success, historical importance, anything goes. EDIT: I decided to add a poll."
The cars existed, they're there for all to see. That's why I didn't get the GPL lovers reference, not your post. (I wasn't clear about that myself )

From a pure beauty point of view, it's still hard to narrow it down between the Eagle and the Sharknose Ferrari, but from an overall standpoint, and a bit of GPL bias, have to go with the Lotus 49. It was iconic in so many ways, and a 100% 'pure' race car, designed for one purpose and one purpose only.

No offense but....isn't that what any F1 car is? "100% 'pure' race car, designed for one purpose and one purpose only"?
I haven't seen any sputtering around town lately....errrr.....EVER!!!.......
Now, one might say the 312PB was an F1 car draped in sports racer clothing (ala F5000 Lola 333s cum new era Can Am cars)......but it was a clean sheet sport racer that had a very F1-ish designed chassis. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2C5uF4bguc

I mean, it focused on speed over everything else. I suppose you could say that about all of Colin's cars due to his obsession with lightness, but the 49 was the ultimate version of that, especially combined with the other cutting edge innovations it included, like the DFV engine and the gearbox being stressed member of chassis.

Which one/s haven' been/aren't? You can say it about any designers cars. You've really got me curious as I've been following F1 a looonnngggg time and never noticed dual (or more) purpose F1 cars.
btw, think BRM H-16 re: stressed engine/box...in the P83 and the Lotus 43. So guess where the idea came from for the Cossie'd 49?
Here ya go; an excerpt from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BRM_P83
"The P83 chassis
Like contemporary designs such as the Lotus 33 and Cooper T81, the P83 chassis was a riveted monocoque made of Duralumin with integral fuel tanks running down the chassis on either side of the driver. Unlike these cars though, the engine was designed to be a stressed member of the chassis in the same configuration that the much more successful Cosworth DFV would later establish as the norm, and was mated to a 6-speed gearbox, with the gear lever unusually situated to the left of the driver. The front suspension was conventionally arranged, with unequal length double wishbones and inboard coil springs and dampers. The rear suspension consisted of twin radius arms, reversed lower wishbones, single top links and outboard springs and dampers, attached to the gearbox and engine."
Also, the 43:

Yea, the 49 wasn't the first to do the stressed member thing. In fact, there was a car that tried it many years before even your example but the name escapes me. Thing is, the 49 actually did it properly, so many people think it did it first. The BRM P83 on the other hand was a design failure in every way conceivable. As for 'which ones aren't (designed for pure speed)', those designed to balance speed and reliability over only speed.jimclark wrote: ↑4 years agoWhich one/s haven' been/aren't?
