I like Ricciardo's pencil mustache; almost makes him look like a modern-day Errol Flynn, another famous Aussie.

PROVISIONAL: STARTING GRID. Main Race

Reflects Danny Rics 3 spot Penalty from China for passing under SC. I would think seeing as he is dead last he might take a new engine just for the hell of it, have a spare in the bank for later in the year. That would entail a pitlane start. Miss any sillyness at T1 as befell Lando Stroll and Alonso yesterday. Of course the downside is he would miss out on the opportunity to make up a few spots off the line. Roundabouts and swings.

Its a long season, 24 races with 6 Sprints, and only 4 engines allowed. Having a 5th in the bank might be prudent and save a late season grid penalty for an extra engine being needed then. Just a thought.

Oh, and Ocon cops a 10 second penalty and a demerit point for an unsafe release to be served in the main race, from when he drove into Leclerc going out for the sprint race out lap to the grid. Crofty was saying he served that during the SC in the Sprint ...... a bit of a blunder because at that point Ocon hadnt officially received this penalty (The FIA doc with the penalty wasnt published until 9:36 pm, way after the Sprint race finished.) As far as I am concerned you cant serve penalties under the SC anyway.
I think Croft was just pre-empting an obvious penalty and got himself confused.. Its the only penalty given to Ocon over the weekend according to the FIA docs page.

Anyway the grid

I stayed away to watch the sprint. Besides the usual Max walking away with it, the race was alright.

Kmag's driving was pretty out of order. Not sure where I stand on the lack of a penalty for Hamilton for the start though. I hate drivers getting penalised for unintentional contact.

Hamilton should have enough experience not to go full send in a 2 car width corner and try and overtake 4 cars at once.

Oh great, the starting grid has changed. Some of us had Zhou down to start last in the game and would have scored points, but oh no, Danny Ric and his stupid penalty had to spoil it :(

Though if Ricciardo does go for a pitlane start as @Everso Biggyballies suggested, that would be a good thing as it would make Zhou last again :fingers: :whistling:

Max shouldn't have turned in / Lewis didn't have to make the apex.

You can't argue with the Cult

Cut a corner, 10sec penalty.

Yeah, if the contact was unintentional, is it's really annoying to put penalties

Yes. Just spotted him in the intro, at the Hard Rock Stadium entrance, strutting around trying to look important.. Not looking as orange as he usually does

STRATEGY

It will be a one stopper almost certainly, with most opting for just the medium and hards. Most last year started on mediums and went to hards.... Max however, back in 9th on the grid, started on hards until lap 45 / 57, going onto the mediums which is what let him catch and pass Sergio, who ran mediums until lap 20 and then ran hards until the end.

The only oddball team were McLaren who both started on softs, ran a handful of laps before going onto hards through to the. end. They didnt trouble the scorers.

Interestingly this year Norris actually recorded the fastest time of all in Friday's Sprint Qualifying - but it was in SQ2 on the mediums. He liked that compound so much he ran it again in Qualifying, and Zak Brown has said their car comes alive on that compound.

So the likely options.

Image

Who has what in the way of rubber

Max has one set of new mediums and two hards. Norris the only one of the leaders who has a new set of softs.

Image

The tyres have a long life here with very little degregation.... the problem is keeping them in the window and not overheating them (we are looking at 50C track temp)

Image

Pit lane duration in pit stops here is short, and under 10 seconds under SC or VSC. Last year we hd no SC or VSC, a clean run. The first year was different. An SC late on could cause a rush for softs.
They say a 20% chance of rain.
