Anyone have experience as a track marshal?

#1

Post by MonteCristo »

Thinking of joining up with the local association:

https://www.qmroa.com.au/

Just wondering if anyone has any experience and has thoughts on what goes on?

Would start out as a track marshal I suppose. Idiot with a broom that falls over, etc.

Hoping to join the Rural Fire Service as well, so could step up to be a fire marshal as well possibly if that goes well.

Not related, but I've looked into being a volunteer fire fighter. Sadly I am outside of the 6 minute required response location for my nearest stations.

I know a guy in this country who was a track marshal, I say was as I think he's had to give it up due to health issues. Not sure that would be of any use to you though.

If you do take it on, good for you. I know it's a tough and at times dangerous job, but very rewarding too, or so I'm told.

For what it's worth, my grandad was a volunteer fireman during WWII, he used to drive the town's engine bless him. Back in the day they had those big, heavy brass helmets. It was nothing like it is today.

ISTR Andy telling me he was a volunteer fireman as well! I think he may have had to give it away due to an injury, maybe back issues.

Still alive and kickin but givin his second job career a more serious go than his first .... not :haha:

I`m marshaling with the IoMTTMA, the Southern 100 as well as the Andreas Racing Asoc in the Isle of Man as a member of the Yorkshire based 1946 marshals (auto 66 back then) since Manx GP 2017

My Deputy Sector Marshal on the Mountain Course has been the Chief Marshal at Scarborough, these days at Mallory Park.

I'm looking forward to do the IoM Mountain Course, Billown and Jurby in 2024 again. Since a pretty lovely trip to Armoy in 2023 I might be doing this as well in 2024

Pre TT 2023 saw a rather serious accident in final sidecar race between Stadium and Castletown Corner where my post became involved in.
TT and Manx GP been kind in this regard though

To be honest I`ve got no idea how marshaling is organized down under
But one thing I could do is getting you into contact of someone in charge down at Eastern Creek if You`re still interested. Kristi might be able to forward you more regionally

I'd contacted my state marshalling organisation, but didn't hear back.

So I went over to the state motorsport fire and rescue folks who got back to me immediately.

They have a training probation period of six months within which you need to do six events. Given it's quiet in January, and we're away effectively April to June, I'll join up from July.

So instead of being an idiot with a broom, hopefully I'll be an idiot with an extinguisher :).
