Great little interview with JoNew.

He's clean-cut and doesn't say stupid things. But at the same time, he doesn't come across as that "PR polished" sportsperson who has to stop a moment and think about "the right thing" to say.

I'm pretty confident that he's a genuinely nice guy.

Indycar is in a bit of a bind. They get so much flak whenever the cars finish under yellow they want to do everything to finish under green, whilst desperately not adding a lap to the race or going GWC.

Just be consistent about it, I'd say.

I thought the same. I admit I was looking at it as an Ericsson fan / supporter and thought he was hard done by. I felt it smacked a bit of Penske was favoured, and they did not want to pay Marcus his back to back half million dollar bonus, and would rather have the guvnor's car in Victory lane. I felt sorry for Marcus.

Oh, and yes I am not in favour of last lap restarts. I would have been happy with the original way it was panning out which was a Pace car led finish. They went one step too far with the F1 style last lap restart.

Marcus is a little pissed with the way it panned out and decisions taken.... others say its all for the show
Marcus Ericsson’s disappointment at his narrow defeat to Josef Newgarden in Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 was compounded by what he believes was a wrong call from race control to throw a late red flag and set up a single-lap sprint to the finish to avoid the race ending under caution.....

Oh dear, I watched a recap of the race, and what can I say... What has 'The 500' come to? Driving standards were worse than at a Formula Ford clubbie, the cars look like gokarts and the racing was incredibly boring. This is even worse than F1!!!

The 1997 one lap dash was total amateurs. The TV crew was unsure if it goes green, field was single file and strung out as hell and some teams probably didn't know what is going on either. Goodyear wasn't really ready for it based on how far behind Luyendyk he was. Peak IRL days though. Only 13 cars finished.

@MonteCristo Well, Newgarden is more mature now and Penske is basically a corporation itself but he did have some rookie swagger back in the day. When he qualified on front row at Long Beach I thought he would either win the race or crash in the first corner and sure enough, he wanted to pass Franchitti on the outside and promptly stuffed it in the wall.

And these incognito vids in the pre-Instagram era will always remain:

Re the tyre that came adrift from Kirkwood's car and hit the Chevy Cruze in the car park......

Penske Entertainment will give fan new car after flying tire hit old one at Indy 500
Robin Matthews, whose car was damaged at the Indianapolis 500 after a crash sent a tire spinning over the grandstands, will get a new vehicle.

According to an Indianapolis Motor Speedway spokesperson, Penske Entertainment will provide Matthews with a new car. The incident occurred with less than 20 laps to go in Sunday's race when Felix Rosenqvist and Kyle Kirkwood collided and Kirkwood's rear left tire bounced off the track and flew over the crowd in Turn 2.

"I didn’t see it come down," said Matthews, a racing fan from Indianapolis. "I came down and they said, ‘Robin, it’s your car!’ I thought, ‘No.’ I thought somebody was pranking me. It’s a car. It’s fine."

I'm really, really glad no one got hurt in this. That tyre was launched over the fencing WAY too easily.
