2022 banter & Silly season thread for MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3

I qill start next seasons thread with an update on the sponsorship situation of Rossi's new for 2022 VR46 Moto GP team.
As most will be aware Rossi believed he had a naming rights deal in place with a Saudi company known as Tanal Entertainment confirming a supposed title backing from Aramco. That failed to materialise. Anyway water under the bridge as a new Italian naming rights sponsor has today been confirmed.....

Rossi’s VR46 MotoGP team finalises title sponsor following Aramco saga
VR46 has now confirmed it has reached a deal with Italian banking company Mooney to be its title sponsor for 2022 in Moto2 and MotoGP – with the squad now known as Mooney VR46 Racing Team.

A brief statement from the team said: “Mooney, the first Italian Proximity Banking & Payments company, will be the new title sponsor of the VR46 Racing Team, the racing team created by Valentino Rossi and protagonist in the MotoGP and Moto2 categories of the world championship.

“Following the agreement, the team's naming will be Mooney VR46 Racing Team and it will be used in all the team's images (including motorbikes and riders' suits) and in official communications.

“Further information will be revealed on 3 January.”
https://www.autosport.com/motogp/news/r ... a/7033623/

The VR46 squad will be run by Pablo Nieto – current VR46 team boss in Moto2 – and will field year-old Ducatis for Luca Marini and MotoGP rookie Marco Bezzecchi.

Rossi’s outfit takes over the grid slots of the departing Avintia team, who quit MotoGP at the conclusion of 2021.

More news on the extent of the Mooney VR46 sponsorship package.

It has also been revealed that Mooney will back Rossi’s own car racing exploits and the rest of the VR46 Riders Academy.

Rossi is happy to have an Italian backer on board for his Italian focussed projects.
“I am happy to have at our side from the upcoming season an Italian company like Mooney, leader in the field of proximity payments and with we share the strategy of developing the young Italian talents together with the research for a constant improvement in the performance,” said Rossi.

“Mooney, in addition to being the title sponsor of our team in the MotoGP and Moto2 World Championship, will also join us the VR46 Riders Academy and in my first four wheels racing season.”
It has long been known, the VR46 squad will field Luca Marini and rookie Marco Bezzecchi on Ducatis for its first season in the MotoGP class in its own right. A few more details have emerged.

Marini will this year enjoy Ducati’s latest motorcycle, the Desmosedici GP22, after riding an older version in VR46 colours at Esponsorama Racing in 2021, while Bezzecchi gets the GP21.

Good luck to them and hope they do well.

A lot of GT stuff by the look of it and a mention made of WEC. And IMSA...... he seems to like the idea of Endurance stuff rather than Sprint type races.

He will take part in the two six-hour events that make up the Yas Marina enduro in Abu Dhabi on 8 January in a Kessel Racing Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo. His teammates will be half-brother Luca Marini and his long-time friend and associate Alessio 'Uccio' Salucci.

He has also stated he 'wants to race cars regularly this year.' He seems to have structured the VR46 management in a manner whereby he will be a figurehead and not at the pit wall each weekend

He seems to have an eye on the States as well if a recent tweet and interview is anything to go by.
"Every year I try to make one or two races in cars," Rossi said in an interview posted this week on the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship's Twitter feed.

"From next year I will race GT cars in endurances races and championships; at the moment it is not decided [in which series] yet."

The 42-year-old hinted that there is a strong possibility that he could end up racing in IMSA in 2022, saying "there is a very interesting championship in the US called IMSA," before mentioning its season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona fixture in January.
He has also 'mentioned' a wish to do Le Mans 'one day'.
Basically it all seems like his plans are a bit fluid at the moment.... maybe waiting to see how the Covid thing goes in terms of messing with calendars.

I spoke too soon..... just been announced

Rossi out of Gulf 12 Hours due COVID-19 contact

Valentino Rossi will miss this weekend's Gulf 12 Hours endurance race due to being a close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19.

That puts made to any hopes he had of repeating his previous successes in this event (outright podium and class wins)

Salucci and Marini will still compete in the event, with former GP3 racer and GT regular David Fumanelli taking Rossi’s place.

By my reckoning opening practice for that event is either on or about to be on now. Instead of sitting in a car Val is now sitting somewhere in isolation awaiting a test result. Not sure of local laws there but that would be the case for a classified close contact here in Melbourne.

Sadly I think we are going to see a fair few cases like has just happened to Vale going down this year in all categories.

:sorrow: :tearful:

Anyway.... apologies for going off topic. I did not realise at the time of mentioning Vale's plans this year away from VR46 was going to turn into an unrelated to bikes Rossi news matter.

A few launches of bikes and liveries have been happening.... not going to show the all but I do rather like the look of the Aprilia. A bit similar in colours to last year but I liked that as well.

Aprilia will once again field Aleix Espargaro in 2022, with Maverick Vinales joining him full-time having contested five of the final six rounds of 2021 following his Yamaha exit.

Of note is the fact this year will be Aprilia's first as a standalone manufacturer, Aprilia and Gresini having parted ways at the end of the 2021 season, with the latter becoming a Ducati satellite squad for 2022. I think they had been together ever since the Aprilia name returned to MotoGP in 2015.

Will be interesting to see if Aprilia can continue the form they started to show last year. (They scored a podium at the British GP, their first in shall we call it their modern era. They seemed on the pace in testing....

Image

Just to update what has been happening in MotoGP.... Testing has already started in Malaysia and I think more testing in Indonesia. It seems Ducati is the team with pace atm... unless your name is Jack Miller. The times posted show him to be struggling.

Champion Quatararo is I know struggling a bit with his new bike, finding it a bit of a handful. MM93 has it seems got over his double vision problems and has been testing, although I have noticed he had had a couple of crashes in the couple of days testing in Malaysia.

Moto GP testing. Sepang Final day times.

OK wasnt going to but here is a bit about testing at Sepang.

Sepang MotoGP pre season testing finished with Bastianini putting the new-look Gresini Ducati team on top of the timesheets with a new all-time (unofficial) lap record.

The second and final day got off with Saturday leader Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia) and then Bastianini (GP21) both beating the previous fastest ever two-wheeled lap recorded at Sepang, (Danilo Petrucci, on a Ducati in 2019.)

It looked like there was a good chance of seeing MotoGP's first ever 1m 57s lap - Bastianini said later he had run wide at the final corner on his fastest lap - but a shower arrived shortly before 2pm, then heavier rain at 3p. Most riders packed up early, although some stayed on to complete wet laps.

Day 2 of Testing at Mandlika Raceway

The Doctor will be happy!.. VR46 Ducati top the time sheets with Luca Marini.

After problems with the new track in Indonesia on Friday, (heavy rain ahead of the test, as well as ongoing construction work around the site, meant Friday’s conditions were damp and muddy, requiring a 90 minute red flag time whilst the track was cleaned), Saturday's running ran without any interruption - though the circuit remained filthy off-line.

Marini topped day 2 with a 1m31.289s on his 2022-spec Ducati, with Honda's Marc Marquez second fastest and Maverick Vinales on the Aprilia third.

The top 10 was completed by Fabio Quartararo, Joan Mir, Johann Zarco, Enea Bastianini, Pol Espargaro, Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia.

Quartararo unhappy with Yamaha progress... influencing his decision as to whether to stay with Yamaha in 2023

The big news really today was that Quartararo is very disappointed in the level of improvement of the Yamaha over the off season.

Quartararo ended last weekend’s Sepang test unhappy as Yamaha failed to make any top speed gains with its bike compared to its 2021 challenger, while little has changed this weekend at the Mandalika test.

Fabio already said back in November he would not sign a 2023 Yamaha deal until he saw tangible progress with the package come the 2022 pre-season.

Yamaha has openly stated re-signing the 2021 world champion is its “top priority”, Quartararo said on Saturday in Indonesia that his future remains open.

“Obviously, I expected a bigger improvement of the bike,” Quartararo said.

“And that makes my future open. I have to look at the best option for me.”

Is he just trying to get Yamaha to dig deeper into their pockets? Seems like its not the money but more the (lack of) performance gains. He has been comfortably the fastest Yamaha runner in testing. But not troubling the fastest runners.

Honda’s Espargaro fastest on final day of MotoGP pre-season testing

Espargar (who topped the times on day1) pipped Fabio Quartararo to top spot in MotoGP’s final pre-season test, at Indonesia’s Mandalika street circuit.

Pol Espargaro clocked a 1:31.060s in the first hour of Day 3 of the test and no one would go any quicker thereafter. Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro stayed in third with the 1:31.385s which he set inside the first 60 minutes of proceedings.

I understand the morning quick times not being beaten was most teams doing race length runs in the afternoon
although Franco Morbidelli (Monster Energy Yamaha) climbed to fourth near the end with a 1:31.416s.

Morbi beat his teamate at the Ducati Lenovo Team, Francesco Bagnaia, by 0.020s, with the rest of the top 10 being Rins (Suzuki Ecstar) in sixth, from Viñales (Aprilia Racing), Zarco (Pramac Ducati), Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM), and Alex Marquez (Castrol LCR Honda).

Luca Marini (quickest on the second day with a 1:31.289s), ended up 12th on Day 3 with a personal best 1:31.665s on his VR46 Ducati, while Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda) was 14th with a 1:31.793s.

Jack Miller was 15th on a 1:31.870s and Tech3 KTM Factory Racing’s Remy Gardner 21st on a 1:32.860s with a relatively low 42 laps under his belt. Gardner’s team-mate Raul Fernandez notched up even fewer kilometres, pulling out of proceedings early due to still feeling the effects of a big crash on Day 2, also suffering double vision.

Joan Mir did not venture out today after suffering food poisoning.

Not sure about this one, but hey I wont prejudge it.....

MotoGP’s Amazon Series: What it’s called, release date and more

long-awaited Amazon Prime Video docuseries will release this year as the two-wheeled series hopes to reap the same rewards Drive To Survive has given Formula 1.

Image

The series was first announced last year, with camera crews spotted at the Qatar Grand Prix season-opener following the paddock around.

Like Netflix’s Drive To Survive, MotoGP’s docuseries will offer fans unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to the biggest names in the series and chart their 2021 seasons.

Here is everything we know so far about the Amazon series.
What’s it called?

The new Amazon Prime Series will be called MotoGP: Unlimited.

Dorna Sports, the commercial rights holder of MotoGP, announced the name of the series last week during a press call for its upcoming premier.

Who is making it and how many episodes?

MotoGP: Unlimited has been made by MediaPro, a Spanish production company, with over 50 film credits to its name.

The firm’s productions have netted it two Oscars and two Golden Globes.

MediaPro’s portfolio also extends to television, including The New Pope starring Jude Law, and award-winning advertisements recognised at the Cannes Film Festival.

MotoGP: Unlimited will consist of eight episodes at 50 minutes in length.

Who will appear in MotoGP: Unlimited?

It is unclear at this stage who MotoGP: Unlimited will focus on, but Fabio Quartararo’s ride to the world championship in 2021 and Marc Marquez’s return from injury will likely be covered.

The poster released for it also includes Maverick Vinales, Joan Mir, Francesco Bagnaia and Jack Miller, suggesting they will feature prominently.

It is understood the series has been shown to teams and riders for feedback, but they – along with Dorna Sports – have been kept away from creative decisions.

Have there been any other MotoGP documentaries?

While this is the first Drive To Survive-style docuseries produced about MotoGP, the championship has been given the documentary treatment in the past.

British director Mark Neale made a series of films focusing on MotoGP this century, starting with 2003's Faster. He made a follow-up in 2004 entitled Faster and Faster, which focused on the 2003 and 2004 seasons. In 2006 he released The Doctor, The Tornado and The Kentucky Kid about Valentino Rossi, Colin Edwards and Nicky Hayden during the 2006 campaign.

In 2011 he released a follow-up to Faster and Faster called Fastest, which centred on the rivalry between Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, and events of the 2010 season. In 2015 Hitting the Apex, produced and narrated by Brad Pitt, was released, which focused on the early years of MotoGP in the 2010s.

That remains the last feature-length documentary centred on MotoGP released to a worldwide audience.

When will MotoGP: Unlimited release?

MotoGP: Unlimited will have its premier in Madrid on 16 February and Paris on 17 February, where two episodes will be shown and a press conference held at the former premier.

Though no official release date has been given for the series, Amazon Help in Spain appeared to have accidentally leaked a release date of 14 March – which is one week after the 2022 season begins in Qatar.
