New Teammates vs Established Teammates
I know this has been brought up in the media and podcasts, etc, but it is highly unusual to see such an imbalance between established teammates overcoming new teammates. Especially when your new teammates are Ricciardo, Vettel and Alonso. We only had one pre-season test which would obviously count a lot towards this, but does anyone have any other theories? Or just coincidence? Perhaps Norris and Stroll are better than we thought and Alonso is nearly 40 and been out of F1 for a couple of years. Perez and Sainz are also lagging but we kind of expected that.

Stroll is not that good. Norris might be.

Cars are incredibly complicated, switching from a system to another might bring issues. On the other hand they have simulators that would help drivers to get accustomed without actual track testing. I don’t dig the new car theory that much. Vette alonso and ricciardo seem drivers on the su set boulevard this year. Sainz...he’s slower than Leclerc, nuff said

I think it’s a set up and car feel issue. Remember Ricciardo being very open 2 years ago that the braking feel on the Renault was much different from the RedBull and he was not comfortable. I would imagine something similar is happening with these established drivers in new teams this year. The drivers themselves are just not commenting on it yet.

An explanation from Norris as to why he is faster than Ricciardo: https://www.grandprix.com/news/sainz-be ... -cars.html
Of course, it does not answer the question of why Leclerc is faster than Sainz.

This year is very much transparent how car characteristics and driver's adaptability play on the track for all to see.
Speaking of fair comparison between DR and Vettel, I think we would got a different picture in 2013 season had DR partner Vettel, than one we actually witnessed in 2014, when Vettel had some initial reliability problems with equipment, not enough practices, difficulty with adapting, and culminating with resignation to his situation. Bad optics haunt him until today.
Today DR seems to be experiencing, in part, similar challenges. The car is not meeting his expectations and he needs time to re-learn again how to race his McLaren.
I am actually curious whether Sainz and Perez have cars that are not far off their driving styles, or drivers possess higher degree of adaptability let's say over Vettel and DR.
I am not convinced that answers are easy and straight forward.

I've never understood the hype behind Sainz tbh. When Ferrari signed him, instead of say Ricciardo or even Russell, I was genuinely surprised.Ruslan wrote: ↑3 years ago An explanation from Norris as to why he is faster than Ricciardo: https://www.grandprix.com/news/sainz-be ... -cars.html

I agree, although I find him a difficult driver to judge. There are times he seems as good as anyone, there are times he seems a little lackluster.SB83 wrote: ↑3 years agoI've never understood the hype behind Sainz tbh. Vettel put stroll back in his box, thankfully. Has he had the upgrades?
The board equivalent of the Jody scheckter chicane. Fast but pointless

Think Sainz showed that he can deliver this weekend.SB83 wrote: ↑3 years agoI've never understood the hype behind Sainz tbh. Ehh, two of the three starters in front of him dropped out and he had absolutely nothing for Max at the end. As soon as he shaved off a few tenths (2.7s was the closest he got, iirc), Max turned on the afterburner and stretched out to 8 secs or whatever it was at the finish. Whereas with Charles, had he competed, would've surely stood in way of Max for the win.erwin greven wrote: ↑3 years agoThink Sainz showed that he can deliver this weekend.SB83 wrote: ↑3 years agoI've never understood the hype behind Sainz tbh.
