RACE STARTED. The LMH cars are barely faster than the LMP2 cars. One LPM2 car is second now.

Race called. Alpine wins Sebring.

Bad weather conditions forces Freitas to call it the race with some 10 minutes to go.

Yes indeed....

WEC Sebring 1000 Miles: Alpine takes victory as storms shorten race

Alpine took a maiden World Endurance Championship victory in the season-opening 1000 Miles of Sebring that was thrice red flagged due to a huge Toyota Hypercar crash and localised thunderstorms.

Image
The planned eight-hour race ended in an anti-climax when severe weather moved into the area in the final hour.

The #36 Alpine A480-Gibson grandfathered LMP1 car – driven by Nicolas Lapierre, Matthieu Vaxiviere and Andre Negrao – dominated the event from pole, constantly outpacing the Hypercar class opposition from Toyota and Glickenhaus.

Following the first red flag and 30-minute delay, while the barriers were repaired following a huge crash for the race-leading #7 Toyota of Jose Maria Lopez at Turn 15, the race went green with just over 3 hours and 40 minutes remaining.

The surviving #8 Toyota of Sebastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa led at that point but had to take emergency service to avoid running out of fuel, and pitted on the following lap for another stop.

At the resumption, the Signatech-run Alpine led Glickenhaus by a lap, with the remaining Toyota dropping back to third. However, as the green flag flew, Ryan Briscoe in the Glickenhaus passed the sole Corvette C8.R GTE Pro car before the restart, earning a penalty.

After a second red flag for electrical storms in the area, although no rain fell, the race was scheduled to restart with a 36-minute dash to the finish – but with more rain threatening. After further electrical activity, the field was getting ready to restart when more lightning was detected nearby.

The chequered flag was waved with 14 minutes still on the clock as the heavens finally opened. The Alpine was declared the winner by 9.2s from the #8 Toyota and the Glickenhaus Briscoe shared with Olivier Pla and Romain Dumas.

The #23 United Autosports ORECA entry piloted by Paul di Resta, Oliver Jarvis and Josh Pierson didn’t pit when everyone else did, and won the LMP2 class in fourth overall ahead of WRT trio Robin Frijns, Sean Gelael and Rene Rast.

WRT's #41 Realtime crew completed the podium in third with Ferdinand Habsburg, Norman Nato and Rui Andrade, ahead of series debutant Prema with Robert Kubica, Louis Deletraz and Lorenzo Colombo.

Porsche overcomes Corvette in GTE Pro

Image
Kevin Estre and Michael Christensen won the GTE Pro class in the #92 factory Porsche 911 RSR by 1.4s from Tommy Milner and Nick Tandy in the sole Chevrolet Corvette C8.R.

After an entertaining battle between Porsche and Corvette over the opening hours, during which both Porsches were penalised for a startline infringement, Estre passed the Corvette following the first red flag on the run to the final corner.

The sister #91 car driven by Gianmaria Bruni and Richard Lietz looked set to make it a 1-2 for Porsche, but a jammed left-rear wheelnut hampered its cause as it finished third, over 9s in arrears of the Corvette. The factory Ferraris were off the pace all weekend and trailed home in fourth and fifth, with the 2021 title-winning #51 crew of James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi leading their team-mates Miguel Molina and Antonio Fuoco.

In GTE Am, the Northwest AMR squad of David Pittard, Nicki Thiim and Paul Dalla Lana won out ahead of the TF Sport Aston of Marco Sorensen, Ben Keating and Florian Latorre, and Team Project 1’s Porsche shared by Ben Barnicoat, Ollie Millroy and Brendan Iribe.

Alpine Wins Heavily-Interrupted 1000M Sebring
Race ends under safety car as United, Porsche and Northwest AMR pick up class wins

19 March 2022, 12:11 AM

Image

Alpine Team Elf has scored a dominant victory in the 2022 FIA WEC season-opening 1000 Miles of Sebring which ended under safety car conditions after being stopped three times due to incidents and the threat of adverse weather.

The first of the three stoppages came just before the halfway mark after Jose Maria Lopez had a big shunt in the #7 Toyota Gazoo Racing GR010

The incident occurred while Lopez was leading the race and trying to get past the #88 Dempsey Proton Porsche of Julien Andlauer at the hairpin. Lopez tagged the Porsche while going around the outside after the exit of Turn 7 and was spun off into the barriers.

Lopez continued, thinking the damage wasn’t too bad and he could nurse the car back to the pits. Unfortunately, moments later the nose dropped shortly after he got up to speed, sending the Toyota head-on into a set of tire barriers where it was launched into a rollover.

Thankfully Lopez was able to walk away unscathed. Toyota’s Alex Wurz said: “First of all, Jose is out of the car — he is OK with no pain. This is good news. This is what we see sometimes in WEC. He clipped the tail of the car, said on the radio it was OK to continue after his spin. He accelerated, the nose came down because of the impact, he couldn’t steer and he went straight into the tire wall. Thank God he is OK and the safety of the car is good.”

Andlauer said he felt it was a misjudgement from Lopez. “I stayed on the inside, he came across me and must have thought he was past me. It was very bad for both of us,” he commented.

Then later in the race the red flags came out again due to the threat of thunderstorms trackside with just over an hour to go, then for a third time after a brief return to the circuit for the cars under safety car conditions. The race eventually ended under safety car conditions following one final attempt to get the race restarted before the heavy rain arrived.

As for the racing itself, it wasn’t an all-time classic but there was plenty of action in all four classes throughout to keep the big crowd on hand entertained.

Le Mans Hypercar was perhaps the least action packed of the four categories. Alpine had the pace all weekend and ran off with it from the start. Andre Negrao, Nicolas Lapierre and Matthieu Vaxiviere didn’t put a foot wrong all afternoon and evening and proved to be untouchable, taking the early lead in the points tally as a result.

“It was a tough race, we expected this. We started on the right foot. With red flags too it was hard for all of us. This is crazy!” Said Negrao.

“The red flag at the end wasn’t good for us, we are thankful it didn’t restart!” Lapierre added.

Behind, Toyota’s #8 crew of Brendon Hartley, Ryo Hirakawa and Sebastien Buemi will feel relieved to have salvaged a second place after the sister car’s dramatic retirement and further misfortune during the red flag. The #8 team were forced to pit for emergency service before the race restarted and take the minimum amount of fuel while the pit lane was closed, then pit again shortly after the green flag for a full service. This cost them a huge amount of time, which they were unable to recover from.

Third, and scoring its first FIA WEC overall podium, was Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus. Jim Glickenhaus’ single 007 LMH proved to be both quick and reliable this week. Despite issues over long stints tyre temperature in the heat, the car looked strong and survived a tough race on the punishing Sebring circuit. Another encouraging performance from the small privateer outfit up against automotive giants.

United’s #23 the class of the field in LMP2

In LMP2, United Autosports’ #23 ORECA of Paul Di Resta, Oliver Jarvis and Joshua Pierson was the class of the field en route to a relatively comfortable victory. The WRT ORECAs, sister #22 United example, PREMA’s machine and the pair of WRT cars all showed flashes and threatened to challenge for the victory, but ultimately were unable to overcome the No. 22 crew who set the pace throughout.

“What an incredibly result. We came with anticipation, with Josh’s first race as the youngest WEC driver ever. I am ecstatic,” Jarvis explained.

“It’s unbelievable to come away with the win in my first race,” the jubilant 16-year-old American Pierson said.

The #31 WRT ORECA came closest, finishing second, Robin Frijns looking on course to reel in Di Resta for a grandstand finish, before red flags cut his effort to snatch the win short.

The PREMA Orlen ORECA initially completed the podium for what would have been impressive result for the single seater regular in its first WEC meeting. However, the team was demoted to fourth after the race was called. PREMA looked capable of challenging for the win early in the race, but suffered poor luck under the first red flag, as the team had worn tyres when the race restarted and lost a lot of time out on track.

Instead, the REALTEAM WRT ORECA was promoted to the final podium place making it a double-podium for the Belgian WRT outfit.

Porsche beats Corvette to Pro win

Porsche GT Team took the win in GTE-Pro, Michael Christensen and Kevin Estre’s #92 911 RSR-19 with the upper hand as the race was finally declared in the threatening conditions. Corvette Racing’s 2022 WEC season debut ended with a favourable second place for Tommy Milner and Nick Tandy, the #91 Porsche of Gianmaria Bruni and Richard Lietz in a solid supporting role for third.

The Porsches and the Chevrolet were well matched on pace and what might have turned into tyre-wear stand-off had the race continued uninterrupted. The sole Corvette C8.R carved out a hard earned advantage over the pair of Porsche 911 RSR-19s, Nick Tandy’s early double stint typically robust in overhauling the #92 pole-sitting Porsche of Estre and Christensen who had pushed hard from the start. On worn rubber Tandy held off the #92 Porsche’s pressure before the first red flag intervened.

The Corvette’s advantage neutralised behind the safety car, the #92 Porsche seized its opportunity at the restart. Kevin Estre drafted Tommy Milner’s Corvette down the back straight at the green flag, running side by side around the final Turn 17 to take the GTE Pro lead, the third placed #91 Porsche closing on the Corvette in traffic to pile on the pressure.

The Corvette took an extended stop to fix a door issue from earlier contact, and despite Nick Tandy executing a precision move on James Calado’s Ferrari through Turn 10 to regain third, the Porsches had more presence into the fifth and sixth hours. The 911 RSR-19s were taking fresh tyres at each stop though, the #64 car having a set in hand as the race extended, and had demonstrated good performance on ageing rubber. Tommy Milner was able to regain second place by the time the race finally resumed concluded under the Safety Car but Sebring was denied its traditional GTE duel to the chequered flag.

AF Corse simply never figured in this race, last year’s champions James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi showing briefly in third place, but a second off the pace throughout, as was the #52 sister car trailing fifth and last in class.

Northwest AMR leads Aston 1-2 in Am

Aston Martin delivered a solid 1-2 in GTE-Am. The #98 Northwest AMR crew of Paul Dalla Lana, David Pittard and Nicki Thiim took the victory ahead of the TF Sport Vantage AMR of Ben Keating, Florian Latorre and Marco Sorensen. The #56 Team Project 1 Porsche of Brendan Iribe, Ollie Millroy and Ben Barnicoat completed the podium.

Ben Keating’s #33 pole sitting TF Sport Aston Martin led the GTE-Am field in an Aston Martin 1-2-3 at the start, his advantage short-lived as the #98 Northwest AMR Vantage took control at the front, a position its crew of Paul Dalla Lana, David Pittard and Nicki Thiim were able to maintain throughout the swing of pit strategies in this unusual stop-start race. This would be Dalla Lana’s first WEC class win with the #98 car since Spa 2018.

“It’s a great feeling, it’s been a couple of years since my last win. It’s long overdue,” said Dalla Lana.

The #77 Dempsey Proton Porsche challenged Aston Martin’s dominance before the first red flag, Sebastien Priaulx in a particularly strong WEC debut. Christian Reid maintained the pressure but was tagged into a spin at the Hairpin after the first restart. Harry Tincknell would complete the Porsche’s race in fourth.

This allowed the Team Project 1 Porsche of Iribe, Millroy and Barnicoat to take the fight to Aston Martin, the #56 car leading briefly as pit stops cycled through. Marco Sorensen pulled off a bold pass in the #33 TF Sport Aston Martin to resume the works-supported Aston Martin 1-2 just before the second red flag, which denied what could easily have been a fight to the flag between Sorensen and Thiim, the two Aston Martin works drivers.

Best of the Ferrari entries would be The Iron Dames 488 GTE Evo, the pink liveried car showing well throughout the week and finishing fifth in class.

With the visit to North America complete, the season is set to continue at Spa on May 7th for the first six-hour FIA WEC contest of the year.
