Easiest access I've got to starters in the Rolex is:

2019 - 47, 2018 - 50, 2017 - 55

'16 - 54, '15 - 53, '14 - 67, '13 - 56, '12 - 58

:)
Those were the days my friends, we thought they'd never end.....

Daytona 24 Hours preview: GT Le Mans

A seven-car GTLM field will roll to the green on Saturday for the Rolex 24 at Daytona. The class is two cars down since Ford ended its Ford GT program at the end of last year, while all other contenders from 2019 return for the traditional IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Corvette Racing – Chevrolet Corvette C8.R

#3 – Antonio García/Jordan Taylor/Nick Catsburg

#4 – Oliver Gavin/Tommy Milner/Marcel Fässler

An all-new car with an all-new concept. No longer carrying the engine in front of the cockpit, the Corvette C8.R is now a rear-mid engine sportscar. The change in concept has rid the American sportscar of its iconic long nose in favour of a more aerodynamic look and an overall design reminiscent of a stealth jet fighter.

Like all of its GTLM competitors, Chevrolet, too, can boast an overall victory with a production car in the Daytona 24 Hours, the manufacturer’s win coming in 2001 with the Corvette C5-R. The last class win dates back to 2016 when the Pratt & Miller-run squad took a 1-2 victory.

In the driver’s seat of the #3 car some significant changes have been made as well. Out are Jan Magnussen and Mike Rockenfeller and in are Jordan Taylor and Nick Catsburg. A lot of experience has been lost with Magnussen’s departure, but in return last year’s overall winner Taylor has joined with Dutch powerhouse Catsburg coming in for the endurance races.

Over in the #4 Corvette other than the car, all is still the same. Oliver Gavin, Tommy Milner and Marcel Fässler are all back, all looking to follow up their 2016 Daytona victory with their second win in the classic 24-hour race in Florida.

Victory in Daytona would not only be significant in itself, but would also end Corvette’s winless streak that began after the team last won a race in April of 2018.

BMW Team RLL – BMW M8 GTE

#24 – John Edwards/Augusto Farfus/Chaz Mostert/Jesse Krohn

#25 – Connor De Phillippi/Philipp Eng/Bruno Spengler/Colton Herta

BMW returns to the high-banked Speedway as defending winner and it has Augusto Farfus to thank for it. The Brazilian came in last-minute in 2019 and single-handedly drove the BMW M8 GTE to the lead in the later hours of the rainy race before it was red-flagged. BMW’s first success in Daytona dates back to 1976 when the BMW 3.0 CSL won, followed by class wins in 1997 and 1998 with the BMW M3 GTR as well as two wins as an engine supplier during the Grand Am years.

In 2020 Farfus will take the wheel of the #24 BMW M8 GTE, a change from last year when he jumped in the #25. The BMW superstar replaces Alex Zanardi to team up with John Edwards, Chaz Mostert and Jesse Krohn.

The winning car from last year sees Connor De Phillippi, Philipp Eng and Colton Herta returning and Bruno Spengler making his first appearance at Daytona since 2017. While De Phillippi, Eng and Spengler are all experienced endurance racers, Herta is a relative newcomer, having made his Daytona debut last year. One year on from his head-turning performance, Herta has become a two-time IndyCar race winner in his rookie year with the best yet to come.

Risi Competizione – Ferrari 488 GTE

#61 – James Calado/Alessandro Pier Guidi/Daniel Serra/Davide Rigon

Houston-based Risi Competizione is the sole Ferrari entrant in GTLM and only one of two Ferraris in total in this year’s Daytona 24 Hours. The Giuseppe Risi-owned team is hot off a win in Petit Le Mans last October and finished second in Daytona one year ago but has yet to taste GTLM victory in the 24 Hours. In its 23 years of existence Risi Competizione did come close to winning outright, finishing second in 1999 with a Ferrari 333 SP and again in 2003 with a Ferrari 360 Modena GT. In 2002 the team finished third overall while claiming the SRP II class win with a Lola B2K/40.

With so few Ferraris making the tour to Daytona, Risi Competizione has top pickings for its driver line-up and with a full factory crew of James Calado, Alessandro Pier Guidi, Daniel Serra and Davide Rigon has picked the best. The former three form a regular drivers trio, with their finest moment coming in the most recent 24 Hours of Le Mans when they won the GTE Pro class for AF Corse.

Porsche GT Team – Porsche 991 RSR

#911 – Matt Campbell/Nick Tandy/Fred Makowiecki

#912 – Laurens Vanthoor/Earl Bamber/Mathieu Jaminet

Although not having been present in the top class of the Daytona 24 Hours for many years, Porsche still holds the record of most outright wins by a manufacturer by a mile. The brand from Stuttgart has put 18 wins to its name in the time spanning from 1968 to 2003, and even 22 as an engine supplier with the most recent win coming in 2010 in the back of the Action Express Racing Riley.

Victories in the GT Le Mans class have eluded the CORE Autosport-run squad in recent years, however, with its win in 2014 being the last time a Porsche took the Daytona class victory.

Porsche’s latest addition to its factory line-up, Matt Campbell, is immediately being put to work. The Australian teams up with Nick Tandy and Fred Makowiecki in the #911 Porsche 991 RSR for the Michelin Endurance Cup, taking over Makowiecki’s duties as the Frenchman has been promoted to full-time IMSA pilot.

The #912 Porsche remains unchanged: Laurens Vanthoor and Earl Bamber are again scheduled for the full season with Mathieu Jaminet jumping in for the Michelin Endurance Cup weekends.

Daytona 24 Hours preview: GT Daytona

The biggest field at the Daytona 24 Hours is once again set to be the GT Daytona class, as the category – run to GT3 regs – will host 18 entries from nine manufacturers with a range of drivers from all-start factory pros to Gentleman drivers and up-and-coming youngsters all tackling the banking.

Pfaff Motorsports – Porsche 911 GT3 R

#9 – Dennis Olsen/Zacharie Robichon/Lars Kern/Patrick Pilet

The plaid Porsche is back for another crack at a full IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship campaign with the team recruiting the big guns from Porsche’s roster of talent as marque signing Dennis Olsen – recently crowned Intercontinental GT Challenge champion no less – joining the team’s rookie race-winner Zacharie Robichon for 2020 as the Canadian returns for his second season.

Joining the duo for the round-the-clock attack on the Floridian banking is Porsche test driver Lars Kern – a handy driver of GT3 machinery – and Patrick Pilet, the Porsche WEC driver familiar with the speedway after years of competing in the main factory team in the GTLM class.

GRT Grasser Racing Team – Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo

#11 – Richard Heistand/Steijn Schothorst/Franck Perera/Albert Costa

#19 (GEAR Racing powered by GRT Grasser) – Katherine Legge/Christina Nielsen/Tatiana Calderón/Rahel Frey

#44 (GRT Magnus) – John Potter/Andy Lally/Spencer Pumpelly/Marco Mapelli

European powerhouse GRT Grasser Racing Team, a brand intimately familiar with success in Lamborghinis, has packed up its championship-winning Blancpain GT Series team and headed across the Atlantic to join the ranks of American endurance racing for the full season – having previously dabbled in part-year programmes.

It’s fair to say team-owner Gottfried Grasser isn’t doing things by halves. The three-pronged assault starts with his ‘own’ entry, with a GRT-branded Lamborghini for Richard Heistand – who took two wins for AIM Vasser Sullivan last year – as well as European aces Steijn Schothorst, Franck Perera and newly-confirmed factory driver Albert Costa, which is surely one of the pre-race favourites.

That said, one crew that knows how to win at Daytona is the #44. Better known as the Magnus Racing team, John Potter has taken a step back from running his own team to partner with Grasser for this year. Potter’s kept the spine of the team that has done so well in recent years as long time co-drivers Andy Lally and Spencer Pumpelly return, joined by newly-crowned Blancpain GT champion Marco Mapelli.

Rounding out the Grasser trio is the core of the all-female team that competed for Henreicher Racing/Meyer Shank Racing in 2019. Christina Nielsen – GTD champion in 2016 & ’17 – is partnered once again by Katherine Legge. The pair, with multiple class wins between them, are joined by sportscar regular Rahel Frey and single-seater racer Tatiana Calderón, the newly confirmed Super Formula driver making the step into GTs for the first time.

AIM VASSER SULLIVAN – Lexus RC-F GT3

#12 – Frankie Montecalvo/Shane van Gisbergen/Aaron Telitz/Townsend Bell

#13 – Jack Hawksworth/Parker Chase/Michael De Quesada/Kyle Busch

A podium at Daytona for Montecalvo, Telitz, Bell and Jeff Segal last year didn’t spark the championship challenge the American team would be hoping would have come from such a good result, as the team secured just another two podiums for full-season drivers Montecalvo and Bell.

The second car, which had Hawksworth joined by new Grasser recruit Heistand, took a pair of firsts but also couldn’t string any sort of form together.

There’s no stones being left unturned this year, as Blancpain GT and Supercars champion, Bathurst 12 Hours winner, and all-round star Van Gisbergen tackles the banking for the fifth time.

It’s the same in the second car – just on a larger scale – as only Hawksworth and Chase return to the RC-F for Daytona. De Quesada, a Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA champion, is joined by two-time NASCAR Champion Kyle Busch as the Las Vegas native tackles the Florida circuit in something other than a stock car for the first time having previously won in the Cup Series, albeit in the Daytona 400.

Wright Motorsports – Porsche 911 GT3 R

#16 – Ryan Hardwick/Patrick Long/Anthony Imperato/Klaus Bachler

After a two-race return last year, Blancpain GT World Challenge America regular Wright Motorsports makes its return to IMSA action at the Daytona 24 Hours with a strong line-up of Porsche talent.

Joining Stuttgart’s contractors Pat Long and Klaus Bachler is Wright regular Anthony Imperato – a podium finisher with the team last year – and 2018 Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America winner Ryan Hardwick, who is making the switch from Paul Miller Racing for this season as Wright embarks on its 20th season of racing on the continent.

Heart of Racing Team – Aston Martin Vantage GT3

#23 – Ian James/Nicki Thiim/Roman De Angelis/Alex Riberas

Returning for the first time since 2016, Ian James has relaunched the Heart of Racing Team outfit – which raises money for Team Seattle, a charity that supports the Seattle Children’s Heart Center – and has picked a new manufacturer as the long-time Porsche team gives Aston Martin’s new Vantage its debut at Daytona.

James has no rust from the team’s sabbatical – having raced in GT4 America last year – but has never the less assembled a crack squad for the twice-round-the-clock classic as American racing regular Roman De Angelis – 2019 Porsche GT3 Cup champion – is joined by Alex Riberas, just announced as a brand ambassador for the manufacturer, and factory ace Nicki Thiim, a man who needs no instruction on how to drive Astons quickly.

Precision Performance Motorsports – Lamborghini Huracán GT3

#47 – Brandon Gdovic/Eric Lux/Mark Kvamme/Johnathan Hoggard

The Lamborghini squad, which took part in just the Endurance Cup races, returns once again for the first of four of the long distance races in America (including Sebring, the Six Hours of Watkins Glen, and Petit Le Mans) with the returning Gdovic and Lux – who took in two races for PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports last year in the LMP2 class. The team hardly set the world alight last year, but an almost entirely new driving unit might give it the spark to kick on this January.

UPDATE: The team confirmed on Monday that Sunoco Whelen Challenge winner, and Autosport Aston Martin BRDC Young Driver of the Year, Johnathan Hoggard has moved to the team alongside Mark Kvamme. The pair had taken part in the Roar pre-race test in the Rick Ware Racing LMP2-spec Riley but have made the switch to the Huracán for the race.

Paul Miller Racing – Lamborghini Huracán GT3

#48 – Bryan Sellers/Madison Snow/Corey Lewis/Andrea Caldarelli

A mainstay of the GTD class, Paul Miller Racing brings a strong line-up for the season opener as Bryan Sellers and Madison Snow, title winners in 2018 are reunited once again after the issues around Snow’s drive rating has been resolved with IMSA respecting the FIA’s silver-rating for the 24-year-old.

Joining them are two drivers vastly experienced Lamborghini drivers, the first is Corey Lewis – who won the Lamborghini World Finals in 2018 – and the latter is Andrea Caldarelli. The Italian has taken the GT world by storm in the last few years having taken two Blancpain GT Series titles, as well as claiming silverware almost everywhere he’s been – including a third-place at Daytona for the same team last year.

The quartet have installed themselves as early favourites for the race, with all four no strangers to winning GT silverware.

Black Swan Racing – Porsche 911 GT3 R

#54 – Tim Pappas/Jeroen Bleekemolen/Sven Müller/Trenton Estep

Tim Pappas’ own team has made a return to racing in America after a Daytona-Glen double last year with a Porsche filled with talent that could threaten the full-season regulars.

Joining Pappas is travelling gun-for-hire Bleekemolen, a man who is no stranger on how to get in a car and squeeze every millisecond out of it, Porsche junior Müller and yet another Porsche GT3 Challenge champion, this time in the form of Trenton Estep. All of them are no strangers to the cockpit of a 911, so it will be fascinating to see how they combine and whether the team can pick up any silverware.

Meyer Shank Racing – Acura NSX GT3

#57 (Heinreicher Racing with MSR) – Álvaro Parente/Misha Goikhberg/Trent Hindman/AJ Allmendinger

#86 – Mario Farnbacher/Matt McMurry/Shinya Michimi/Jules Gounon

The reigning class champions have returned with a new two-car entry for the 2020 season as title holders Farnbacher and Hindman have been split up between the two Acuras as the MSR team hopes to spread the success.

They’ve not left anything to chance in that quest. Joining Hindman are experienced hand Allmendinger, the rapid Silver-rated Goikhberg and a man no stranger to the top step of the podium – and indeed one that can quickly adapt to a wide range of GT3s – Parente.

The #86 might not have the same number of years under its belt, but the team features rising GT stars hungry to put one over the more experienced line-ups elsewhere in the field. 22-year-old McMurry already has an IMSA class title under his belt, Michimi is continuing to build up his American racing knowledge while Gounon is rapidly becoming a man to turn to when a result is quickly needed.

Scuderia Corsa – Ferrari 488 GT3

#63 – Cooper MacNeil/Toni Vilander/Jeff Westphal/Alessandro Balzan

There’s just a few certainties in life: death, taxes, and a strong Scuderia Corsa line-up for an endurance race. This year is no different as the only Ferrari in the GTD field maintains a tight-knit group of drivers who have certainly got chemistry on their side with MacNeil, Westphal and Vilander – who’ve raced together all over the world – joined by Balzan, who himself is no stranger to the prancing horse.

That all puts them in a strong position, Vilander can always turn out a remarkable stint when all seems lost, while MacNeil and Westphal are more than capable of consist long-runs when its needed.

Riley Motorsports – Mercedes-AMG GT3

#74 – Lawson Aschenbach/Ben Keating/Gar Robinson/Felipe Fraga

From the only Ferrari in the field, the next entry is the only Mercedes but it features a number of familiar drivers, not least WEC teammates Keating and Fraga, who will be moving their partnership over onto the speedway.

Jumping in the three-pointed start alongside them is Lawson Aschenbach – who has won several GT championships in the states in an almost equal variety of machines – while fourth driver Robinson is probably best known as running the eponymous Robinson Racing team alongside father George which closed at the end of 2019. Gar’s own racing experience comes from Trans-Am and the Australian Skye Sands Combined Sedans series.

WRT Speedstar Audi Sport – Audi R8 LMS GT3

#88 – Mirko Bortolotti/Rolf Ineichen/Daniel Morad/Dries Vanthoor

Think of Audi GT3 teams, and you’ll probably think of Team WRT. Vincent Vosse’s all-conquering team has continued to expand its reach and has returned to America with the sole Audi in the IMSA field and a line-up that puts to bed any myths that the Belgian squad isn’t taking their Floridian trip seriously.

As well as Morad – who has raced for the team a few times in the banking – and one of the fastest of the new generation of GT racers, Dries Vantoor, two names more familiar with Lamborghini are stepping across to the four rings. The first of which is Rolf Ineichen, a more than capable silver who has 42 wins under his belt in a variety of cars and championships, but the biggest is probably Mirko Bortolotti who has left the Italian marque for pastures new as an Audi factory driver.

Turner Motorsport – BMW M6 GT3

#96 – Robby Foley/Jens Klingmann/Bill Auberlen/Dillon Machavern

Long-time BMW team Turner Motorsport has entered 2020 on a high, having won the season-ending Petit Le Mans in its long-serving M6 GT3. That though has given them a boost of confidence heading into the new decade as Auberlen – a veteran of both the team and the German manufacturer – returns with the two teammates that won alongside him in Georgia – Foley and Machavern.

Completing the quartet is Klingmann, who has become BMWs go-to racer for the GT3 having competed in a variety of series for the marque.

Aston Martin Racing – Aston Martin Vantage GT3

#98 – Mathias Lauda/Ross Gunn/Pedro Lamy/Andrew Watson

The factory team comes into the 24 Hours on the back-foot having already lost one of its drivers to a skiing injury. The intention was for WEC GTE Am Champion Paul Dalla Lana to get the band back together with Lauda and Lamy as well as new team-mate – and British GT Champion – Ross Gunn. However, the injury has put to pay to that plan and instead Andrew Watson, who has flourished since his swap from McLaren, will come in to the team as a second silver with a point to prove as he looks set to race in the USA for the very first time.

Daytona Friday Notebook

John Dagys’ Friday notebook from busy day on and off-the-track at Daytona…

***Initial manufacturer reaction from Friday’s historic ACO-IMSA prototype convergence announcement (pictured above) has been encouraging, although with technical regulations yet to be finalized, representatives have been non-committal at this time.

***When asked what the ‘h’ in LMDh stands for during the press conference, IMSA President John Doonan said “historic” while FIA World Endurance Championship CEO Gerard Neveu replied with “hopeful” and ACO President Pierre Fillon declaring it “hypercar” and IMSA Chairman Jim France saying “hydrogen/hybrid” with IMSA CEO Ed Bennett admitting it’s “hard to be last” with a laugh.

***Doonan told Sportscar365: “At the moment you heard everybody’s definition. I think when we do the final regulations you’ll get a better sense as to what the h stands for.”

***The FIA has “warmly welcomed” today’s announcement by the ACO and IMSA that will “strengthen” the WEC according to FIA Endurance Commission President Richard Mille. “For sure this project will bring to the FIA WEC more manufacturers and more competitors. The FIA will support this new class of prototypes with our trusted partner ACO.”

***While set to be embraced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans beginning in 2024, Doonan hasn’t ruled out seeing hydrogen-powered cars in the WeatherTech Championship as part of the new partnership.

“There’s many manufacturers including my previous manufacturer, Mazda, that have studied hydrogen as a propulsion fuel and opportunity,” Doonan told Sportscar365. “It could be, potentially. We’ve tried to have sports car racing be a technological platform and showcase and who knows what’s possible some day.”

***Fillon confirmed plans for the hydrogen class at Le Mans to be performance balanced to run for the overall victory alongside LMDh and Le Mans Hypercar entries.

***The No. 38 Performance Tech Motorsports Oreca 07 Gibson escaped significant damage in Don Yount’s Practice 4 crash and will make the start of the race. Yount found the inside tire wall at Turn 6 in a bizarre incident and was able to walk away from the scene, with the car not sustaining any chassis damage according to team owner Brent O’Neill.

“He was just going to go for a lap and see where he ended up and just made a small mistake. In this business it happens… we’ll roll it out tomorrow. No tub damage, just some parts, a lot of them,” O’Neill told Sportscar365.

***Haas F1 Team principal Guenther Steiner was spotted in the paddock. Steiner, manager of Formula 1’s only current American team, is friends with Mazda Motorsport’s new director of motorsports, Nelson Cosgrove, who is also a former senior manager at Toyota.

***Experienced IMSA racer Jeroen Bleekemolen claimed his first-ever race victory at Daytona in the four-hour BMW Endurance Challenge on Friday afternoon.

***The Dutchman is one of seven drivers performing double duty between the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship rounds taking place this weekend. The others are Jeff Westphal, Dillon Machavern, Trent Hindman, Bill Auberlen, Robby Foley and Chris Miller.

***New BMW Team RLL full season signing Bruno Spengler is set to become only the third driver to have raced the three latest GTE/GTLM models from the German manufacturer at Daytona. The other BMW team members to have raced the Z4, M6 and M8 GTEs are John Edwards and Bill Auberlen.

***Spengler cited the Z4 GTE, which he drove to second in the 2015 Rolex 24, as his favorite of the three models: “I was in love with the Z4,” he told Sportscar365. “For me, Daytona with the Z4 was my first ever endurance race so I have this love story with that car.”

***Michelin has confirmed the continuation of several contingency programs for the 2020 IMSA season, including the ‘Michelin Mid-Way Front-Runner’ for GTD, GS, TCR and LMP3 classes, as well as the ‘Michelin All Hands FTW’ for the same classes.

***IMSA announced Friday the addition of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as a partner in its IMSA Green Racing program. The DOE joins existing program partners – the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and SAE International.

***ExxonMobil has extended its sponsorship with Heinricher Racing, reaffirming its commitment with the Mobil 1 brand that is sponsoring the Meyer Shank Racing-run No. 57 Acura NSX GT3 Evo this year.

***Team co-owner Michael Shank will be part of a new monthly podcast with Tim May. The first episode of the ‘At Speed Podcast’ presented by Rocky Fork Company was released this week.

***Despite the absence of former PR guru Sean Heckman, GRT Magnus has announced the continuation of its Daytona 24 webcast, which will be streamed during the race.

***NBC Sports will utilize 17 of its IMSA, NASCAR and IndyCar commentators, analysts and reporters on-site for its coverage of the race, including Meyer Shank Racing’s AJ Allmendinger and AIM Vasser Sullivan’s Townsend Bell, who will be both driving in the race and serving as analysts during their time out of the car.
