Speed Lover Porsche Cup Wins 6H Support Race at Dubai

24H Dubai race week kicks off with Dutch championship WEK’s 6H New Year race…

A Porsche 911 GT3 Cup entered by Belgian outfit Speed Lover won the six-hour race at Dubai Autodrome on Tuesday evening, kicking off race week for the 15th edition of the Hankook 24 Hours of Dubai.

The annual Winter Endurance Kampioenschap’s New Year race was held at Dubai Autodrome for the first time because of ongoing work at Circuit Zandvoort to prepare for the Dutch Grand Prix.

The Dutch championship partnered with 24H Dubai and 24H Series organizer Creventic to move its six-hour race to Dubai, taking place on Tuesday between 3:30-9:30 p.m. local time.

A total of 23 cars took part, including a combination of Cup, GT4 and TCR cars, as well as less powerful sports cars and touring cars.

Pierre-Yves Paque and Steven Palette drove the winning car, Speed Lover’s Porsche Cup car, completing 152 laps to cross the line five laps clear after six hours.

Paque and Palette both drove for Sainteloc Racing in the GT World Challenge Europe last year, while Palette also made appearances in ADAC GT Masters.

The overall podium was completed by two TCR cars: a Cupra TCR DSG entered for Ivo and Luc Breukers, and a Hyundai i30 N TCR for Febo Racing Team’s Dennis de Borst and Lorenzo van Riet.

The highest-placed GT4 car was a McLaren 570S shared by Liesette Braams and Gaby Uljee, entered by GT4 European Series regular Las Moras Racing Team, which finished fourth overall.

A number of teams and drivers entered the race in preparation for this weekend’s 24H Dubai, which will take place on Friday and Saturday.

Official on-track action begins on Thursday with Free Practice at 10:20 a.m. local time (1:20 a.m. ET / 6:20 a.m. GMT), while qualifying follows later that day.

Dubai Weekend Notebook

Sportscar365’s weekend notebook from the 24H Dubai paddock…

***A parade through the nearby Dubai Motor City was held on Wednesday evening (pictured above), with all cars driving from the circuit and along the main street behind the main grandstand, which is a busy shopping district. It received a large turnout and cars were joined by a selection of supercars from the Dubai Police Force.

***Dubai Autodrome general manager Faisal Al Sahlawi spoke at the parade and later the pre-event barbecue held on the pit straight, and confirmed next year’s race date of Jan. 14-16, moving one weekend later. It’s expected that the Rolex 24 at Daytona and its preceding Roar Before the Rolex 24 test will also be moved back by one week, maintaining the same relative calendar positioning, with 24H Dubai the weekend after the Roar and two weekends before the Rolex 24.

***Reigning race winner Rik Breukers will race two cars, splitting his time between the Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evos entered by Car Collection Motorsport and MS7 by WRT. The Dutchman won with Car Collection last year along with Christopher Haase and Dimitri Parhofer, both of whom return this year. That lineup is completed by Markus Winkelhock and Mike-David Ortmann, while Frederic Vervisch drove last year. Breukers’ other teammates at WRT are Christopher Mies, Dries Vanthoor, Michael Vergers and Mohammed Saud Fahad Al Saud.

***WRT is the only team pulling double duty between Dubai and Daytona this year, and team principal Vincent Vosse will be in attendance at both events. The team has two Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evos at Dubai and four factory drivers split across its lineups: Christopher Mies, Dries Vanthoor, Mirko Bortolotti and Kelvin van der Linde.

***Former Lamborghini factory driver Bortolotti is not the only driver to move to WRT from Grasser Racing Team. Rolf and Marc Ineichen are both in the No. 31 car alongside Bortolotti and van der Linde, while Breukers is in the MS7 by WRT entry. Rolf Ineichen, Breukers and Bortolotti won the Rolex 24 at Daytona with Grasser last year in addition to Breukers’ Dubai win 12 months ago.

***Bortolotti says his teammates’ moves are not associated with him, but more a coincidence. “I did my own way, they did their way, and at the end of the day we found each other!” he joked. “With Rolf I have shared many programs and projects in the past with great success in America in the last two seasons together. We have a really good connection, a good friendship. They both are really motivated to do a good job.”

***Earl Bamber Motorsport is using a Porsche 911 GT3 R chassis from Herberth Motorsport this weekend, as both of the team’s usual chassis are heading to Australia for next month’s Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour. Its GT3 Am entry is shared by Will Bamber, Juergen Haering, Tim Mueller, Gerard Lopez and Eric Lux.

***Rain is forecast for much of the weekend and is currently expected to last for much of the race. Sportscar365 understands that Hankook has air-freighted additional rain tires from Germany on short notice for teams to use in addition to their standard three sets of rain tires.

***New lights signifying Code 60 periods have been installed around the circuit for use alongside flags. The lights will aid visibility during the night time, and have been implemented by SPAA05, the company that manages the LED position display panels on the side of the cars.

***Only two of the eight Mercedes-AMG GT3s competing are carrying the brand-new 2020 Evo package for its race debut this weekend. SPS Automotive Performance’s Pro car and CP Racing’s Am car are upgraded to 2020 spec. The new car received a weight break after qualifying and is now running 10 kg heavier than the previous model as per the Balance of Performance, but with the same restrictor size and fuel capacity.

***Beitske Visser received a last-minute call-up to drive 3Y Technology’s BMW M4 GT4 on Wednesday evening and arrived in Dubai on Thursday morning. She had a similar experience last week with a call to head to Daytona to test Fast Track Racing’s BMW GT4 just a couple of days before the Roar.

***Creventic has restructured a number of its classes for the 2020 season, including a renaming of A6 Pro and A6 Am to GT3 Pro and GT3 Am. SP2 and SPX have merged to become GTX for special GT cars not permitted in other classes, while a TCR Light class has also been introduced for older TCR cars from 2015 or 2016.

***Teams competing in the 24H Series Europe will have their worst result scratched from the final standings, with just five of six races counting for points for each team. This also allows teams or drivers to miss one race without losing out on points.

***In the 24H Series Continents, comprising 24-hour races at Dubai, Circuit of The Americas, Portimao and Barcelona, drivers must compete in at least one race on each continent. They can choose between Portimao and Barcelona if not doing both European rounds, but any driver who does not also race at Dubai or COTA will not score points towards the Continents championship.

***Legendary motorcycle racer Mick Doohan is on-site this weekend to support his son Jack, who is competing in the F3 Asian Championship support race. Mick Doohan won five consecutive 500cc World Championships (predecessor to MotoGP) between 1994 and 1998. Also on the entry list in F3 Asia are Jamie Chadwick, Pietro Fittipaldi and Tatiana Calderon.

***The 15th edition of the 24H Dubai will get underway at 3 p.m. local time on Friday (6 a.m. EST / 11 a.m. GMT) with live streaming on the series’ website. Commentary will be provided by Radio Le Mans, with John Hindhaugh and Jonny Palmer in the booth and Nick Daman, Bruce Jones and Joe Bradley in the pits.

Red Flag Brought Out for Torrential Rain

24H Dubai red-flagged after seven hours amid heavy rain conditions…

The red flag was brought out in the Hankook 24 Hours of Dubai at 10:17 p.m. local time due to a torrential rain shower that came during the evening.

A heavy downpour brought out a Code 60 at 9:58 p.m. with seven hours of the race completed, but with many cars unable to reach the maximum speed of 60 km/h due to the conditions and standing water around the track.

The race is now under red flag conditions with all cars parked on the pit straight.

In what could prove a race-defining strategy call, Black Falcon brought Ben Barker in from the lead during the Code 60 period to switch over to Khaled Al Qubaisi.

Al Qubaisi made it back out on track before the red flag, maintaining the lead while the pursuing MS7 by WRT Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo was unable to catch up.

The Emirati driver now has a good amount of fuel in his car ready for the restart, although teams are only permitted to refuel 50 percent under Code 60 conditions.

Car Collection Motorsport’s No. 88 Audi is classified second, ahead of the MS7 by WRT Audi in third.

MP Motorsport leads GT3 Am, while Atlas BX Motorsports is out front in GT4 with its Mercedes-AMG GT4.

STATEMENT ON SUSPENSION OF THE HANKOOK 24H DUBAI 2020 DUE TO FORCE MAJEURE
At 22.17, extremely heavy rainfall in Dubai let to a red flag being shown to the competitors of the HANKOOK 24H DUBAI 2020. The weather conditions have heavily impacted the entire city and the infrastructures of Dubai Autodrome.

Despite the best effort of Dubai Autodrome staff and officials to resolve the situation on track, the water level on track and in the pit lane continued to rise throughout the night.

In mutual agreement, Creventic and Dubai Autodrome have decided not to resume the race on grounds of safety.

The official results and any decision on championship point allocation will be published within short notice.

Black Falcon wins 24H Dubai with race not restarting after flooding…

Image

Creventic has confirmed that the 15th edition of the Hankook 24 Hours of Dubai will not resume after an overnight red flag and worsening weather conditions at Dubai Autodrome.

The race went under red flag at 10:17 p.m. local time on Friday evening after seven hours, 17 minutes of running, as rain showers became heavier and made reaching the 60 km/h maximum speed during the preceding Code 60 period almost impossible for many cars.

Standing water around the track worsened the situation and has taken a long time to dissipate, owing to the track’s limited drainage capacity.

Rain continued overnight, picking up at around 4 a.m. into the heaviest rainfall, while thunder and lightning strikes have also occurred sporadically during the night.

A statement confirming the final suspension of the race was made by Creventic at 7:38 a.m. local time.

Prior to that, updates were made at 11:30 p.m., 12 a.m. and 2 a.m., the latter of which promised a further update at 7 a.m. local time but suggested that the race would not get back underway before 8 a.m.

This allowed the paddock several hours of rest.

Some of the worst flooding on the track is on the pit straight and in pit lane, and would not be able to be cleared in time to get racing back underway.

Reports, meanwhile, suggest the pedestrian access tunnel beneath the track is flooded, too.

Cars were parked on the grid when the red flag was brought out but a number left overnight when it became clear the race would not resume.

“The weather conditions have heavily impacted the entire city and the infrastructures of Dubai Autodrome,” read a statement by Creventic.

“Despite the best effort of Dubai Autodrome staff and officials to resolve the situation on track, the water level on track and in the pit lane continued to rise throughout the night.

“In mutual agreement, Creventic and Dubai Autodrome have decided not to resume the race on grounds of safety.”

Black Falcon Set to Confirmed as Winner

Black Falcon is expected to be confirmed as race winner when official results are released, with its No. 4 Mercedes-AMG GT3 shared by Ben Barker, Jeroen Bleekemolen, Khalid Al Qubaisi, Hubert Haupt and Manuel Metzger.

A bold strategy risk during the Code 60 immediately before the red flag paid off for the German team, which pitted Barker for Al Qubaisi and refueled in time to make it back out on track in the lead, just minutes before the red flag was called.

This allowed it to have over half a tank of fuel ahead of an expected restart while using up Am driver Al Qubaisi’s drive time, but series officials later communicated that the red flag period would not count towards drive times.

Car Collection Motorsport is second with its No. 88 Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo that won last year, while MS7 by WRT’s similar Audi is third.

MP Motorsport leads the GT3-Am class with its Mercedes for Henk de Jong, Daniel de Jong, Bert de Heus and Jaap van Lagen, ahead of Toksport WRT’s Am car.

South Korean team Atlas BX Motorsports is the provisional GT4 winner, also using Mercedes-AMG machinery, and with drivers Jongkyum Kim, Steven Cho, Jaesung Park and Masataka Yanagida.

A trio of BMW M4 GT4s make up the next three positions in class, with Century Motorsport’s pair of cars second and third ahead of Team Avia Sorg Rennsport.

AC Motorsport wins the TCE division with the highest placed touring car and also takes TCR class honors, with its Audi RS 3 LMS TCR.

That car was driven by Gilles Magnus, Stephane Perrin, Vincent Radermecker, Tom Boonen and Matthew Taskinen.

Results are provisional and based on standings immediately before the red flag. Creventic is expected to confirm the official results soon.
