You're one of the very few you thought it was funny. Many were watching the race on YT, including me. And many were also on the grandstands. It was definitely crowded at the start of the race. Luckily it is free entrance! Where do you have that still in motorsports? The GT3 teams can take the hit, because there are so many series they can compete in. The lower classes not. This is their Le Mans. And watching it red flagged after some 7 hours of racing was something no one expected. And in particular not the reason. Last night the equivalent of 10 years of rain fell in a few hours.

And now the most disturbing news:

The rainfall was DELIBERATE!!!

Whatever caused the rain, be it witch doctors, rain dances voodoo or a natural (albeit freak) occurrence Race Control made the right decision to call the race from the footage I have seen.... great pools of water not to mention lighting strikes, it was no place for a race car to be racing. From my understanding the forecast was not about to change. I looked at the weather radar and it was pretty set in, so in terms of safety to competitors pit crews and marshalls given all the metal frameworks and antennas around it was a no brainer.

Dubai Post-Race Notebook

Sportscar365’s post-race notebook after the shortened 24H Dubai…

***The Hankook 24 Hours of Dubai became the third major motorsport event in the Middle East to be impacted by rain in a little over 12 months, as rain also affected the FIA World Endurance Championship’s rookie test at Bahrain last month, while showers and flooding impacted the ABB FIA Formula E Championship’s inaugural Diriyah E-Prix in Saudi Arabia in December 2018.

***This was not the first time heavy rain impacted a race at Dubai Autodrome, as a similar situation occurred during the FIA GT3 European Championship round at the track in 2008, also causing flooding and disruption.

***The crash that took GPX Racing’s Porsche 911 GT3 R out of the race after just seven minutes was caused by Dirk Werner losing the rear under braking while battling with Car Collection Motorsport’s Markus Winkelhock down the main straight. The incident, which sent the Porsche directly into the Turn 1 barriers, initially looked like a possible brake failure but appears to have just been a loss of control while on the dirty side of the track.

***The car has heavy front-end damage and team principal Pierre-Brice Mena says “we will investigate” the condition of the chassis. GPX’s next race is expected to be the GT World Challenge Europe opener at Monza in three months’ time, so it has no major rush to repair the car.

***One of the Code 60s called during the race was for an incident between the Sainteloc Racing Audi and CP Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo. The Sainteloc car headed back to the pits with damage but CP’s new Mercedes was able to continue.

***Mercedes-AMG won all three classes it was represented in, with the overall and GT3 Pro win for Black Falcon, GT3 Am win for MP Motorsport and GT4 win for Atlas BX Motorsports.

“We are very happy to have been able to win this crazy race in Dubai and to score further class wins and podium results,” said Stefan Wendl, head of Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing. “The debut of our new Mercedes-AMG GT3 was also very positive with seventh place overall and I am already looking forward to the next outings at Daytona and Bathurst in the upcoming weeks.”

***A controversial incident unfolded in the pit lane early in the race when a video emerged of a Barwell Motorsport mechanic appearing to push an MRS GT Racing mechanic into one of the MRS Porsches. The MRS mechanic fell into his team’s car and was struck by its rear wing as it left the pit box, before falling to the ground. Barwell received a four-minute pit stop penalty for the incident.

***A statement on the British team’s Facebook page claimed that “one of our crew unintentionally collided with a neighbouring mechanic during a wheel change”.

***GT4 class winner Atlas BX Motorsports usually competes in the national CJ Superrace Championship in its native South Korea. Its drivers Jongkyum Kim and Steven Cho finished first and second in the championship last year, racing Cadillac ATS-Vs in the spec ASA 6000 class, the top level of stock car racing in Korea. Of note, former Formula 1 driver and Super GT regular Yuji Ide also races in the series.

***Atlas BX only received its Mercedes-AMG GT4 at the track on Tuesday, while Dubai marked its first ever event outside of South Korea. The team is evaluating possible future plans with the car, including additional 24H Series races.

***Other GT class wins went to Dragon Racing’s Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo (GTX) and MRS GT Racing (Porsche 991 Cup). TCR cars locked out the overall top ten of the TCE division, while TCX honors went to Team ACP’s BMW M240i Racing Cup and Team Avia Sorg Rennsport won TC as the class’ only finisher, also using a BMW M240i.

***Rory Butcher didn’t make it to Dubai to compete for Century Motorsport because his flight was rerouted due to the ongoing political tensions in Iraq and Iran. Posting on social media on Friday, the Scot explained that his flight was diverted to Istanbul after reaching the Iraqi border but the plane later developed a technical fault that prevented it from leaving Istanbul and continuing to Dubai the next morning. As a result, he decided to return home on Thursday morning, as he would be too late to arrive in Dubai in time.

***The political tension in Iraq and Iran, caused by the U.S. killing of Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani last week and subsequent Iranian airstrikes on U.S. bases in Iraq, caused travel chaos for a number of people in the paddock. Many airlines avoided the usually busy airspace over Iraq and the Arabian Gulf beginning on Wednesday, causing reroutings and diversions to other airports, including Istanbul.

***Dubai is less than 100 miles from the Iranian coast, separated by the Arabian Gulf, but the geographical proximity to Iran did not cause any other problems for the event, with no added security concern amid rising tensions.

***Zengo Motorsport driver Gabor Kismarty-Lechner proposed to his girlfriend Hanna Hartai on the grid before the race. Hanna said ‘yes’, and Gabor went on to finish 11th in TCR.

***The planned return of the TCR Middle East Series has been scrapped. The championship was set to have three races in support of the 24H Dubai and a further three next weekend (Jan. 16-17) at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, before an invitational round as part of the TCR Asia round at Sepang in February.

Race done!

A pity for the low attendance, but in these times it is difficult to get a lot of entries. From the UK it is impossible to get teams at the moment.

15 entries this time. And we had some hopes there would be a nice battle between the three GT3 entries. Two Porsches from Herberth Motorsport and one Mercedes AMG GT3. Sadly the Merc crashed after a few hours, seemed to be a brake failure. The car was beyond repairs.

Herberth Motorsport takes 1-2 finish at Hankook 24H PORTIMAO

PORTIMAO (14 June, 2020) – At the first real world race meeting to be held in Europe since the outbreak of Covid-19, Herberth Motorsport has secured a 1-2 finish at the fourth annual Hankook 24H PORTIMAO.

Tim Müller took the chequered flag after completing 731 laps of the 4.652km Autódromo Internacional do Algarve to secure victory for the Herberth Motorsport Porsche 991 GT3 R Herberth Motorsport Porsche 991 GT3 R (#92, Tim Müller / Taki Konstantinou / Jürgen Häring / Michael Joos / Marco Seefried).

The result marks the first overall win at the Hankook 24H PORTIMAO for Herberth Motorsport, which won in-class at last year’s event en-route to the A6-AM Teams’ title in the 24H SERIES Europe championship standings. On top of that, Herberth Motorsport also broke the event’s previous distance record – 722 laps – set at the inaugural running by Bohemia Energy by Scuderia Praha back in 2017.

The sister #91 entry produced a storming recovery drive to finish 2nd overall (#91, Daniel Allemann / Ralf Bohn / Robert Renauer / Alfred Renauer). The second Herberth Motorsport Porsche 991 GT3 R had jumped to the head of the field in the opening laps and was already three laps ahead at one-third distance, but the Bavarian team lost more than an hour in the pits to a gearbox change. On its race back through the field, the #91 Porsche also set the fastest lap of the race, a 1m 44.692s, with Robert Renauer at the wheel.

After an impressive run, the highest placed 991 category runner – the Mühlner Motorsport Porsche 991-II Cup (#921, Moritz Kranz / Carlos Vieira / Tom Cloet / Jeroen Bleekemolen) – completed an all-Porsche podium in the Algarve by finishing 3rd overall. Though unable to challenge for 991-class victory owing to a myriad of mechanical problems, the Speed Lover Porsche 991-II Cup (#978, Dominique Bastien / Gavin Pickering / Olivier Dons / Eric Mouez) was still classified 2nd in-class and 9th overall after a determined run.

The Mühlner Motorsport Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 (#421, Axel Sartingen / Daniel Schwerfeld / Thorsten Jung / Daniel Bohr / Moritz Kranz) completed a successful weekend for the Belgian team by claiming victory in CREVENTIC’s new CAYMAN series. Its nearest rival – the Veloso Motorsport Porsche Cayman GT4 CS (#408, Pedro Marreiros / Paulo Pinheiro / José Costa / Jean-Roch Piat / Mariano Pires) – was eventually classified 2nd in-class after losing several hours in the pits with handling problems. Fittingly, circuit CEO Paulo Pinheiro crossed the line to collect 11th overall for the Portuguese team.

Regrettably, mechanical woes meant that neither GT4 entrant made it to the finishing line, though the PROsport Racing Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4 (#401, Rodrigue Gillion / Nico Verdonck / Tom Heeren / Constantin Schöll) and the Parkalgar Racing Team Mercedes-AMG GT4 (#412, André Antunes / Alvaro Ramos / Fred Blok / Joaquim Penteado / José Monroy) did complete enough of the race to receive full points in the 24H SERIES Europe standings.

Having qualified on outright pole position for the Hankook 24H PORTIMAO, the HTP Winward Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GT3 (#84, Bryce Ward / Russell Ward / Indy Dontje / Philip Ellis) retired after just three hours following a heavy impact against the turn 13 barriers. Bryce Ward fortunately emerged unscathed but the damage was too great to repair.

CREVENTIC to run parade lap of Monza’s famous banking

Image

As part of the build-up to the inaugural Hankook 12H MONZA this weekend, competitors are invited to complete a parade lap of the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza’s hallowed Curva Nord and Curva Sud banking.

Re-built in 1954 as part of an extensive redevelopment of the circuit following the second World War, Monza’s famous banking was used at four Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix in 1955, 1956, 1960 and 1961, but was discontinued altogether from 1970 onwards on the grounds of safety.

Now used sparingly for competition, the banking remains a popular signature of the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza, and our competitors will pay tribute to the circuit’s near 100-year history with a celebratory lap on Thursday 9th.

All cars taking part in the parade lap on Thursday 9th will assemble at pit exit at 18.30 hrs local local time. The lap itself will get underway at 18.50 hrs and is to be completed at no more than 60kph. After that, teams will line their cars up on the Autodromo’s starting grid for the now traditional pre-race ‘group photo’. Free Practice and Qualifying for the Hankook 12H MONZA begins the following morning at 09.30 hrs and 11.30 hrs respectively.

Herberth Motorsport and Red Camel-Jordans.nl win crazy Hankook 12H MONZA

Herberth Motorsport seals 1-2-3 finish after dramatic finish

Image

MONZA (11 July, 2020) – Herberth Motorsport has secured a 1-2-3 finish at the Hankook 12H MONZA after an incredible grandstand finish to CREVENTIC’s maiden event at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza.

The longest endurance event ever to be held at ‘the temple of speed’ was briefly red-flagged on Saturday afternoon when a severe rain storm made track conditions treacherous. More drama was to follow though. Heading into the final 10 minutes, and having only just passed its sister entry on-track for the overall lead, the race leading #91 Herberth Motorsport Porsche 911 GT3 R (Daniel Allemann / Ralf Bohn / Robert Renauer / Alfred Renauer) ground to a halt at the Variante del Rettifilo.

The new leader – the #92 Herberth Motorsport Porsche 911 GT3 R (Jürgen Häring / Taki Konstantinou / Alfred Renauer) – wasn’t out of the woods though, and had to hold off the incredibly fast-charging #93 entry (Steffen Görig / Stefan Aust / Klaus Bachler), with Klaus Bachler pulling 10 seconds out of the lead with every passing lap and setting the event’s two fastest laps in the process. At the chequered flag, and after an incredible nail-biting finish, the top two Herberth Motorsport Porsches were split by less than half a minute after 12 hours of endurance racing.

Jürgen Häring eventually drove the #92 911 GT3 R over the line to complete 285 laps of the 5.793km Autodromo Nazionale di Monza and secure the car’s second consecutive victory. After two rounds, Herberth Motorsport now holds a seven-point advantage in the 24H SERIES Europe Overall GT Teams’ standings over nearest rival, Speed Lover.

Despite its brutal bad luck, the #91 Porsche was still far enough ahead to claim 3rd overall and secure a podium sweep for Herberth Motorsport at Monza.

Image

The MP Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo (#58, Thomas Gostner / David Gostner / Manuela Gostner / Corinna Gostner / Giorgio Sernagiotto) completed a successful maiden outing in the 24H SERIES with 4th overall. The Car Collection Motorsport Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo (#34, Johannes Dr. Kirchhoff / Elmar Grimm / Max Edelhoff) finished just two laps adrift in 5th, the reigning A6 Teams’ champion having opted to serve a 10-lap penalty and work on the Audi’s troublesome electronics in parc ferme on Friday night.

The Reiter Engineering KTM GTX Concept (#746, Stefan Rosina / Laura Kraihamer / Eike Angermayr), which led the Hankook 12H MONZA outright heading into the overnight intervention, lost what looked to be certain class victory in GTX after myriad electrical problems cost the German team almost an hour in the pits. The win instead went to the ARC Bratislava Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo (#707, Miro Konopka / Mato Konopka / Mato Homola), which recovered from its own early electrical problems to finish 6th overall.

A strong recovery drive meant the Reiter Engineering KTM eventually finished 3rd in-class, just three laps behind the JR Motorsport BMW M3 F80

The Speed Lover Porsche 991-II Cup (#978, Dominique Bastien / Gavin Pickering) took a commanding victory in the 991 class over its sister 979 entry (Olivier Dons / Eric Mouez / Rolf Lietart). So strong was the Belgian team’s pace, the #978 Porsche managed to finish 7th overall.

The race’s only GT4 entry – the MDM Motorsport BMW M4 GT4 (#450, Tom Coronel / Tim Coronel / Jan Jaap van Roon) – secured its first category win of the season, despite suffering a front left puncture during the final hour of the race.

The Equipe Verschuur Renault RS01 (#9, Harrie Kolen / Erik van Loon / Mike Verschuur) had led comfortably during the opening 16 laps of the Hankook 12H MONZA, but was unable to continue after suffering engine failure. Another podium contender, the Wochenspiegel Team Monschau Ferrari 488 GT3 (#22, Georg Weiss / Leonard Weiss / Jochen Krumbach / Hendrik Still), also retired from the event with excessive damage following three separate punctures.
