2020 Bathurst 12 Hour January 31- February 2nd

Image

Its that time of year again, and this year sees an already announced field of 40 cars, (2 more than 2019) with a record GT3 field from 11 manufacturers.

Australia’s international enduro comprises one-fifth of this year’s Intercontinental calendar. The world’s only global GT3 championship also visits the Total 24 Hours of Spa (Europe), Suzuka 10 Hours (Asia), new-for-2020 Indianapolis 8 Hour (North America) and Kyalami 9 Hour (Africa) during a campaign that features five major endurance races on as many continents.

Image

The 2020 Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour is set to boast a record GT3 field with cars representing 11 different manufacturers set to compete.

A total of 40 cars have entered the event, 34 of which will be split between Class A Professional, ProAm, and Silver.

The balance of the field are comprised of GT4 and Invitational entries.

This year’s event is set to mark a number of firsts, including the Australian debut of a Honda NSX GT3.

Two McLaren 720S GT3s will also race at Mount Panorama for the first time with 59Racing boasting entries in both Class A Pro and Silver.

Also making its first appearance in Australian competition will be the Aston Martin AMR Vantage, with R-Motorsport and Garage59 set to field two entries apiece.

Other notable entries include 2019 race winners Earl Bamber Motorsport, Bentley Team M-Sport, Walkenhorst Motorsport with a pair of BMW M6s, and Triple Eight Race Engineering with two Mercedes-AMG GT3s.

“This is a field as competitive and deep as any GT race in the world and represents the truly global nature of the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour,” said event manager Kurt Sakzewski.

“As we saw in 2019, we think this field represents a great balance between having a strong field and depth to have a clean and highly competitive race.

“Teams from Asia, Europe, North America and of course Australia will participate and will represent 11 different GT3 manufacturers for the first time in the history of the event.

“The addition of the Honda NSX, in particular, has attracted enormous attention while the addition of the latest-generation cars we’ve yet to see at Bathurst will make for a very different looking grid this year.”

Entries could swell from the 40 already announced with Sakzewski claiming others were looking to finalise their plans.

“We are still fielding enquiries from teams putting programs together so there is every chance that this list will grow further prior to the event,” he said.

Though no drivers have been named a number have already had their participation announced.

Garth Tander was last week confirmed in one of the Audi Sport Team Valvoline entries, while Lee Holdsworth will race the No 9 Marc Cini entered Audi.

Last year’s race winner, Matt Campbell will race with Absolute Racing having been confirmed by the German marque when he was announced as a fully-fledged factory driver last month.

Class C for GT4 competitors sports just one confirmed entry with a second listed but still to be announced, with four MARC IIs rounding out the field.

There are no entries in Class B, which has previously catered to Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars but this year changed to allow for Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVOs.

Bathurst 12 Hour statement regarding New South Wales bushfires

A statement has been issued that confirms the race will not be affected by the current bushfire catastrophe which has affected much of New South Wales this year, destroying over 600 homes and with a rising death toll. The bush fires are currently not a major problem in the immediate Bathurst area.
Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour organisers can confirm that there is presently no impact on the event from the catastrophic New South Wales bushfires.

As such, Australia’s International Endurance race will continue as planned on January 30-February 2 this year.

At present there are no restrictions in accessing the Bathurst region from Sydney.

The event is monitoring the situation daily and is working with the New South Wales Rural Fire Service, NSW Government and Bathurst Regional Council in order to remain apprised of current conditions.

Any changes to the present situation will be communicated to key stakeholders, competitors, ticketholders and fans should the need arise.

Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour organisers join the broader community in expressing our deepest sympathies to those impacted by the bushfires throughout November, December and early January.

A significant number of our international entrants have reached out from afar enquiring about ways to support those impacted by the bushfires.

The event is working closely with our charitable partner and key stakeholders on a coordinated fundraising effort, with further details to be announced in due course.

We will!!!

One of the most diffult races for me to watch completely. 10 hours time difference.
I can imagine how bad it is for Australian motorsport fans who want to watch European or some American races.

Hehehe the start is probably more sociable timewise for you in Europe than here.... I think start is 5:45am making it an evening start for you! Admittedly it swings in my favour after that with me getting the late afternoon finish and you the early morning slot.

Here is a link to the event schedule.... all support and 12hour race qualifying and practice sessions

https://www.bathurst12hour.com.au/news/ ... rack-when/

Support categories practice starts the ball rolling on Friday 7:20 am local time. 12 hour competitors get a lie in and start their first session at 8:40... or for Class A Platinum & Gold drivers they dont go out until 9:15am.

Here's a more detailed entry list.

It looks like the outright battle is going to be immense again. Will be interesting to see how Honda and Scott Dixon do.

Some big names from Supercars and elsewhere in the entry.

Rick Kelly, who will share the Castrol Aston Martin with Jake Dennis and IndyCar star Scott Dixon.

Lee Holdsworth will pilot an Audi R8 LMS GT3 alongside Marc Cini and Dean Fiore. Audi Sport Team Valvoline #22 will be driven by. Garth Tander / Christopher Mies / Mirko Bortolotti

The number 1 Earl Bamber Motorsport entry also looks strong with Earl Bamber / Laurens Vanthoor / Craig Lowndes

From the 12 hour website confirmation from Mercedes of their lineups
MERCEDES-AMG has confirmed their squad of factory drivers and entrants for the 2020 Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour – assembling an all-star roster of drivers in search of the brand’s second Bathurst win.

Six Mercedes-AMG GT3s will contest the race, including the Triple Eight Race Engineering entry to be driven by Shane van Gisbergen, Jamie Whincup and Maximillian Götz.

Having made its Bathurst debut with third place last year, the Mercedes-AMG Team GruppeM Racing is again part of the field. Maximilian Buhk (GER) and Raffaele Marciello (ITA) will get support from Felipe Fraga (BRA) at Mount Panorama.

The Brazilian is joining the team as the reigning GTD endurance champion of the North American IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Another GT3 car with extended works support will be run by Mercedes-AMG Team Craft-Bamboo Black Falcon. With Yelmer Buurman (NED), Maro Engel (GER) and Luca Stolz (GER), three further highly decorated drivers will be sharing driving duties in the #77 entry.

On top of that, there will be three Customer Racing cars in action at Bathurst with justified hopes of good class results in the Pro-Am category and the Silver Cup.

Nick Foster (AUS), Anton de Pasquale (AUS), Sam Shahin (AUS) and Yasser Shahin (AUS) will be driving the #777 Mercedes-AMG GT3, run by Triple Eight Race Engineering and entered under The Bend Motorsport Park banner.

The team SunEnergy1 Racing led by 2018 IGTC Bronze title winner Kenny Habul (AUS), runs another Mercedes-AMG GT3. In the #75 car, Habul will be alternating with Dominik Baumann (AUT), Martin Konrad (AUT) and David Reynolds (AUS).

Moreover, Patrick Assenheimer (GER), Sergej Afanasiev (RUS) and a further driver (tba) will be racing the #46 Black Falcon Mercedes-AMG GT3.
Although the entry list is confirmed the drivers are still to be finalised beyond what is already known.

International Live Stream and local TV coverage.

No details yet of any official live stream on the official website, but I have found this 'LETS GO RACING' youtube link that is saying it will be live for the race from 18.30 Saturday UK time for the 12 hours of the race.

Im sure the official site will have something posted soon.... in the past they have shown all sessions and supports so if anything comes up I will post it here.

In the meantime the link to the youtube stream mentioned.

It may not work for Aussies, but we will have full FTA coverage on Seven Mate, including the top 10 shootout.
7 Mate will broadcast the entire Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour live and free around Australia this February.

Announced this morning on Sunrise, 7mate will also show the Pirelli Top-10 shootout live on Saturday February 4 in a special one-hour live broadcast.

The shootout coverage will commence at 3:30pm on Saturday afternoon, while 7mate will commence its day-long live coverage of the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour on Sunday, February 5, at 5:30am.

Chad Neylon and Shea Adam will provide pit lane coverage alongside Beretta throughout the two days.

The 2017 Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour is set to be the most competitive yet, with a field of more than 60 cars comprised of 15 brands making up a world-class field of exotic GT vehicles.

International teams and drivers will compete against Australia’s best, including local stars of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship including Craig Lowndes, Shane van Gisbergen, Jamie Whincup and Mark Winterbottom.

Supercars ace Garth Tander joined Sunrise this morning to help preview the event, confirming his participation as part of a strong factory-supported attack from Audi on the race.

“We are looking forward to once again be heading to the Mountain for this great event. It promises to be a great race. We have the best drivers in awesome cars on what is one of the world’s most challenging circuits. It will be a great day,” said Saul Shtein, Head of Sport for Seven.

“The Seven Network is a great partner of the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour and has been a significant part of the growth of the event over the last few years,” added Event Director John Casey.

“Their expanded coverage this year will see 13.5 hours of coverage across two days for the first time, including the Pirelli Top 10 shootout on Saturday, and the entire Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour live and free on Sunday.

“With the high quality grid assembled and some of the best drivers from here and abroad going head to head it should be a thrilling few days on the Mountain.”

LET'S GO RACING does Super Formula and stuff on Youtube so that's probably legit. I think Channel 7's livestreaming service 7Plus will be showing the race as well, at least they did in previous years.

They are legit. They just didn't think of a better name since they the lost the Nismo TV moniker.

The records to beat in 2020

THE 2020 Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour will have to be a pretty special race to topple the records set in the 2019 classic, twelve months ago.

The longest, fastest and in many people’s eyes the best 12-Hour ever, smashed many longstanding event records – some of which may be tough to beat this year despite what is one of the strongest collections of drivers, teams and brands entered in race history.

Here’s some of the markers the field will be aiming to best in 2020. Should some of them fall, quite a race will have unfolded to do it!

Lap and distance records

THE 2019 race smashed the 300-lap barrier for the first time, topping out at 312 laps and 1,938 kilometres of racing.

The raw pace of the field and long green flag periods mid-race saw teams pushed further than ever, making this not only the longest ever 12-hour, but the longest race in terms of distance held in Australia since the 2003 Bathurst 24 Hour.

This topped the previous record set in 2016 at 297 laps (1,845km) in the year McLaren won.

Average Speed

WITH record laps completed and record distances of course comes record speed – the two records go hand-in-hand.

Yet it’s still an impressive piece of Bathurst history given just how fast the 2019 12-Hour was.

The 2019 race was run at a breakneck pace and became just the third ever long distance race at Mount Panorama to be staged at an average speed of 161km/hr or better – 100MPH in the old scale.

The 161.06km/hr average speed made the 2019 12-Hour the third fastest distance race in Bathurst history: the 2013 Bathurst 1000 was run at 161.5km/hr and the 2018 race at a staggering 165.8km/hr.

So while completing 1000km in such a quick pace is remarkable, going nearly double the distance at the same speed is incredible.

It means that, removing just under nine minutes total time lost in pit lane and laps under Safety Car, the winning Porsche’s average lap time across the entire race was in the low 2m06s..

Green running

IT took some number crunching, but late in the race last year it was clear that at Four hours and 4 minutes, the field had completed the longest green flag period in race history.

111 laps were completed across the middle of the race without Safety Car interruption, the uninterrupted period of green running allowing the varying strategies to play out and ultimately helping define the thrilling final hour that delivered Porsche victory.

Lead Changes & Leaders

MORE proof that the 2019 race was a thriller shows when you look at the number of lead changes and the number of cars that led a lap across the duration.

There were 13 different leaders of the 2019 race; comfortably eclipsing the previous record of 10 set one year earlier.

Crucially, those 13 cars swapped the top spot 30 times; also a record.
