Corvette C8.R Makes Surprise Debut at Kennedy Space Center

Chevrolet officially takes wraps off new-for-2020 mid-engined Corvette C8.R…

Chevrolet has officially taken the wraps off the all-new Corvette C8.R, in a surprise unveil Wednesday evening at Kennedy Space Center.

The mid-engined GTE-spec car, which was first revealed by Sportscar365 last year, was presented to assembled media during the launch of 2020 Corvette Stingray convertible, with Corvette factory driver Tommy Milner driving the car onto the stage.

As expected, the car will make its debut in the 2020 Rolex 24 at Daytona ahead of an anticipated full-season campaign in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Wednesday’s event marked the first public appearance for the Pratt & Miller-built machine, which has been under development for more than two years and has completed numerous on-track tests, including outings at Road America, Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta and Sebring International Raceway.

“The C8.R is much more than just a race-tuned version of the 2020 Corvette Stingray. It’s a culmination of many years of testing and development between GM Design, Propulsion, Engineering and the Corvette Racing team,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet U.S. vice president of Performance and Motorsports.

“The collaboration between these teams has allowed us to take these vehicles’ performance to the next level, both on the street and the track.”

Technical details on the car have not yet been revealed, although Sportscar365 understands a formal presentation will be made during next week’s season-ending Motul Petit Le Mans, where the car will also be on display.

Despite initial speculation of a turbocharged engine, multiple sources have indicated to Sportscar365 that the car features a 5.5-liter flat-crank V8 powerplant, although it is yet to be confirmed by GM.

New Silver Livery for No. 4 Corvette

In a move away from its traditional yellow color scheme, the No. 4 Corvette will feature a predominately silver livery, inspired by the color of iconic Corvette concepts such as the 1973 Chevrolet Aerovette and the 1959 Corvette Stingray Racer.

The design is complemented by yellow accents, with the No. 3 Corvette set to run in a reverse color scheme showcasing the brand’s traditional yellow alongside the silver accents.

GM has yet to confirm its driver lineup for 2020, although as reported by Sportscar365 last month, Jordan Taylor is set to replace Jan Magnussen in the team’s full-season roster, with the Dane’s contract reportedly not having been renewed for next year.

I dont traditionally like the look of the Corvettes (always loved the sound) but that is sweet.

Looks like a Vette from the front and rear 3/4s side view is any other current mid engined GT car. Could use some more yellow imo.

Magnussen Leaves Corvette Racing

To pursue racing opportunities elsewhere

18 October 2019, 11:18 PM

After 16 years, 156 race starts, 35 wins and four championships, Jan Magnussen is set to leave his role as a factory driver at Corvette Racing.

In 2020 the Danish driver, whose departure from GM’s factory GTLM programme has been long rumoured, will explore other opportunities in racing.

He leaves the Pratt and Miller programme after a stunning career, which featured a record number of wins and championships since he joined the team back in 2004. In addition to his 35 wins and four titles, he racked up four class wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and one in the Rolex 24 at Daytona and 17 pole positions.

“I’m fortunate to have had such a long career with Corvette Racing,” Magnussen said. “When I joined the program in 2004, I never thought this would be my home for the next 16 years. The team is like my second family. I’m very proud of the championships and race wins we achieved together against very tough competition. Thanks to everyone at Corvette Racing for the good times and memories.”

Magnussen spent his first three years with Corvette Racing as an endurance driver and became a full-time driver in 2007. He partnered with current teammate Antonio Garcia full-time starting in 2012, with the pairing winning GT Le Mans championships in 2017 and 2018.

“Everyone at Corvette Racing thanks Jan for his years of dedication and professionalism during the last 16 years,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet U.S. vice president of Performance and Motorsports. “Jan has been a key part of the growth and success of Corvette Racing. His experience and insight have been invaluable. We hold Jan in the highest regard and wish him well in the next chapter of his career.”

Corvette Racing will confirm details of its 2020 racing programme later this year. It is expected that Jordan Taylor will fill Magnussen’s seat in 2020, moving on from Wayne Taylor Racing’s DPi class effort to compete with the new C8.R.

Van Gisbergen Confirmed in AVS Lexus for Rolex 24

Shane van Gisbergen confirmed for Rolex 24 at Daytona in AVS Autosport Lexus…

Shane van Gisbergen will compete for AIM Vasser Sullivan in next month’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona, the team announced on Tuesday.

The Virgin Australia Supercars star will join returning full-season drivers Townsend Bell and Frankie Montecalvo at the wheel of the No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3 for the Florida endurance classic.

It marks the second high-profile driver to join the Canadian squad for Daytona, with newly crowned NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch set for his IMSA debut in the No. 14 car alongside Parker Chase and Jack Hawksworth.

Van Gisbergen is set for his fifth Rolex 24 appearance and first since 2017.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for me to race again at the Rolex 24 at Daytona,” said the Kiwi. “I’ve missed the American style of racing, so when the phone rang it didn’t take long for me to say yes!

“I want to thank Jimmy Vasser, James ‘Sulli’ Sullivan, Andrew Bordin and all the guys at AIM for this opportunity.

“I think with the Lexus RC F GT3, the experience of the AVS team and the driver lineup that we have for the 2020 Rolex 24, we’ll be a real contender. With the right preparation and testing at the Roar, we’ll have a good chance to get a Rolex!”

The team’s third driver for the Michelin Endurance Cup races have not yet been announced.

“Shane is an outstanding competitor who has competed in the Rolex 24 before, won a lot of races and a championship. We look forward to having him drive the AVS Lexus RC F GT3 at Daytona,” said team co-owner Jimmy Vasser.

Porsche Withdraw IMSA GTLM Cars From 2020 Le Mans 24 Hours

GTE Pro Entry down to 9 cars

Porsche Motorsport have confirmed that their GTE Pro entry for the 2020 Le Mans 24 Hours will be reduced from the planned four-car squad to two, whether or not the race goes ahead as (re) planned in September.

The economic impact of the COVID19 crisis has been directly cited as the reason behind the move which will see the pair of full-season CORE autosports-run IMSA Porsche 911 RSR-19s now not making the trip for the 24 Hours.

That leaves the pair of full season FIA WEC cars as the factory representatives with the current presumption internaly at Porsche that the planned additional drivers for the #91 and #92 will remain in place, though that is not yet formally confirmed.

The #91 then is plnaned to see Gianmaria Bruni and Richard Lietz joined by Frederic Makowiecki whilst the sister #92 sees reigning World Champion GT drivers Kevin Estre and Michael Christensen joined by Laurens Vanthoor.

At present then there are no confirmed seats in the race for the planned #93 crew of 2015 and 2017 overall race winner Earl Bamber, fellow 2015 winner Nick Tandy and 2018 GTE Am winner Matt Campbell who had been due to make his GTE Pro Le Mans debut.

Neither, at present, are we set to see the #94 crew which had been due to feature Campbell’s fellow 2018 GTE Am winner Julien Andlauer (who would also have been making his GTE Pro Le Mans debut) Mathieu Jaminet or Patrick Pilet.

That leaves the GTE Pro entry currently at 9 cars – two apiece from Porsche Team, Aston Martin Racing, AF Corse (Ferrari) and Corvette Racing plus a solo Ferrari from Risi Competizione.

The Porsches become the second and third confirmed withdrawals from the entry after the decision from Frederic Sausset’s SRT41 ‘Garage 56’ effort to postpone their entry.

That should see the first, second and third reserve entries elevated to full entry status with the #55 Spirit of Race Ferrari (Duncan Cameron and co), the #4 ByKolles (the Gibson-powered LMP1 car) looks set to be added to the entry – Tom Dillmann the first named driver, as does a second IDEC Sport-entered ORECA 07 Gibson in LMP2, their #17 car entered with Patrice Lafargue the first named driver.

DSC sources have confirmed that the Ferrari and ORECA are more or less confirmed, this the first time that IDEC Sport will have raced a pair of ORECA 07s.

That leaves seven remaining reserve entries with the second High Class Racing ORECA, their ELMS car naming Jan Magnussen as a driver now topping the list.

This is unlikely though to be the final iteration of the list in what are set to be difficult times for the racing world.
