Van Gisbergen, Whincup & Lowndes Unite For Bathurst 12 Hour Attack

Image

Scott Taylor Motorsport is set to compete in the 2019 running of the Bathurst 12 Hour next February, with a star-studded trio of Triple Eight Supercars drivers, Craig Lowndes, Jamie Whincup and Shane van Gisbergen.

They will take on the race in a Mercedes AMG GT3 with Vodafone backing, as they look to add to their impressive tally of results in the enduro and at the iconic Australian circuit.

All three of them have taken 12 Hour wins in the past. Lowndes has two wins, in 2014 and 2017 with Maranello Motorsport-prepared Ferraris – the latter was with Whincup – and Van Gisbergen was victorious back in 2016 driving a McLaren run by Tekno Autosports.

“It’s sort of like the old rat pack back together again, although we’ve got Shane on board,” said Lowndes, who has won the Bathurst 1000 seven times (including this year), and will drive a Mercedes AMG GT3 for the first time at the 12 Hour as part of this programme.

“The car has lots of memories of when we had Vodafone on the Supercar, but it’s great to see the old colours back, great memories for that era.

“Hopefully the three of us can do Vodafone, Scott Taylor Motorsport and Triple Eight very proud.

“It’s going to be nice, obviously the three of us are very well compatible and we know the circuit very well.

“To have all three of us in one car is very strong. The car for me, I’ll need to get my head around it, but I’m sure that’ll come pretty quickly.”

Whincup, seven-time Supercars title winner, added: “I’m looking forward to teaming up with Lowndesy again, but both years Shane has been opposition for me, so it’s good to be in the same team for an all-out assault.

“All the elements are there for a good show, but I’m just looking forward to bringing all that good that Triple Eight has, STM do a fantastic job and combining all that, we’re confident we can do a good job.”

Van Gisbergen, who is fighting for the 2018 Supercars title, and drove with Scott Taylor Motorsport at the 12 Hour in 2016, concluded: “It’s amazing to team up with these guys. Working alongside them in the race team has been awesome, but getting to drive with them will be a pretty special moment for me,” he said.

“I think every year the event gets bigger and bigger. More European teams and drivers come out, more Australian Supercars guys jump in it too and it just seems to get tougher and tougher every year and the fans support that.

“Hopefully it’s an even bigger race next year and we can put on a good show.”

Already mentioned and under discussion yesterday in the Bathurst 12 hour thread... this is a B12Hr one off and not an ISC series full year entry.

Hakkinen to Race McLaren in Suzuka 10H

Mika Hakkinen to race a McLaren in penultimate IGTC round with Kubota, Ishiura…

Two-time Formula 1 world champion Mika Hakkinen will drive a McLaren 720S GT3 in this year’s Suzuka 10 Hours.

The Finnish star, who won consecutive titles with McLaren in 1998 and 1999, will return to the circuit where he won his first world championship for the fourth Intercontinental GT Challenge powered by Pirelli round.

Hakkinen will share the wheel with historic racing star Katsuaki Kubota and two-time Super Formula champion Hiroaki Ishiura, while the identity of the team running the entry will be released in due course.

2004 Le Mans winner Team Goh is one team known to be entering the new McLaren as part of the Japanese Super GT championship’s GT300 cohort which is joining the full-season IGTC field for the event, however its driver lineup has already been announced.

Hakkinen last raced in 2011, when he drove a Mercedes-AMG SLS GT3 in the 6 Hours of Zhuhai Intercontinental Le Mans Cup round, while Suzuka will also mark his first time competing in a McLaren in 18 years.

“I visited Suzuka Circuit for the first time in 16 years in March 2017 and was able to meet Japan’s enthusiastic fans once again,” said the 50-year-old, who a McLaren ambassador.

“Then, last year, I drove the [McLaren] MP4/13 and enjoyed Suzuka’s unique figure-of-eight track layout. So, this year, I decided to return to racing for the first time since November 2011, and I chose Suzuka Circuit as the place for my comeback.

“Suzuka was also the place where I won the Formula 1 World Championship for the first time and where I have so many enthusiastic Japanese friends.

“I am very grateful to Katsu [Kubota]-san and Mobilityland for making this wonderful project possible. And I hope to see the Japanese fans again in August.”

KYALAMI 9 HOURS

SPS Automotive Performance led a top-18 covered by just one second in Pre-Qualifying this morning ahead of today’s all-important qualifying session and Pole Shootout.

Yesterday’s rain clouds were replaced by bright sunshine and blue skies for the final ‘practice session’ of the Kyalami 9 Hour weekend, and it was Yelmer Buurman who made the most of the favourable conditions en route to 1m42.427s.

That was four hundredths shy of Nick Tandy’s testing benchmark from yesterday but still sufficient to beat the Bentley of local favourite Jordan Pepper by 0.121s.

Pepper initially moved to the top after 40 minutes by beating Matt Campbell’s Dinamic Porsche, which finished just 0.019s behind M-Sport’s Bentley.

Three local bodyshop staff ensured GruppeM Racing’s Mercedes-AMG was repaired in time for Pre-Qualifying after yesterday’s accident. And Raffeale Marciello rewarded their hard work by finishing fourth fastest and just 0.151s down on Buurman’s time.

KCMG’s Intercontinental GT Challenge debutant Joao Paulo de Oliveira ensured four different manufacturers featured in the top-five. His Nissan, which led for a time, finished half-a-tenth ahead of KUS Team 75 Bernhard’s Porsche

Elsewhere, Honda Team Motul finished eighth, the first of the BMWs was 11th and Audi finished 13th.

Watch qualifying and Pole Shootout live on Intercontinental’s website from 14:45 and 16:25 this afternoon.
