I've heard Christian Horner mention that Alonso wanted to move to Red Bull mid-2009 because he (Alonso) thought he could be WDC in a Red Bull. Presumably, Mark Weber would have been bumped. Interesting to think how an Alonso/Vettel dynamic would have gone.

Having said that, it may have been F2, Sears did a couple of F2 races for YCR in 1960 and was offered a full-time race seat for 1961 but he turned it down.

Jordan came close to a Mercedes engine deal for 2004, the engine would have been badged as a SMART, Gary Paffett would have been one of the drivers and the EJ14 would have been based on the McLaren MP4-17D.

Aussie Geoff Brabham failed to pre-qualify twice for the Life team in 1990. At Phoenix he was 26 seconds off the pace. The team was so bad he just left. He went onto being an IMSA champion in the US, a Super-Touring Champ, and won Le Mans. He was also one of only 12 finishers (out of 33) in the 1992 Indy 500. he runs a BMW driver school not far from where i live (Sandown racetrack, just out of melbourne).

Also, when Martin Donnelly had his crash at Jerez, G Brabham was supposed to take his Lotus spot for the race, but politics intervened.

His brother David went onto competing in the 94 season for Simtek.

Franco Scapini was Life's test driver but he was originally intended to actually race for the team but he was denied a super license.

After Gary Brabham left, Bernd Schneider, Rob Wilson and apparently Bertrand Gachot even though he was with Coloni at the time we're all touted as potential replacements until Bruno Giacomelli got the nod.

Ernesto Vita even tried to hire Mika Hakkinen to test the car at the end of the season!
