Waters is getting good drive out of corners SVG is strong into them. SVG is 0.5 behind but cant get close enough unless he is saving something for the last lap

Waters wins from SVG and Davo. Great team effort with the SC pitstop setting it up for Waters.

I enjoyed that.

Calls for Bathurst to be postponed....

The issue I have is that it comes from Peter Adderton, the rent-a-gob owner of Boost Mobile. I cant help but think he is saying it because his Twitter/Social media lifeline of Greg Murphy and Richard Stanaway competing at the event in a wildcard entry likely wont be able to happen, given both Greg and Richie live in NZ and the Trans Tasman bubble allowing quarantine free movement between the two countries has now been canned. Adderton have other cars backed in the event, but the Kiwi wildcard air are the big R event for him, and clearly what his ego at Bathurst will be revolving around. Without them he has no centrepiece to hang everything off.

He speaks of his worry it will become a TV only event and will be reminiscent of last years minimal spectator allowance, which is fair comment. It is however mainly a TV event nowadays given the overseas reach the race enjoys. Clearly it is a major drawcard to the region though and the tens of thousands there do add a huge amount to the event.

Hopefully it wont come to that, but with the way the Covid numbers are heading in NSW at the moment certainly the two and a half months until raceday is looking awfully close.

Im not really sure that putting it off for a month at this stage is going to be any good.... if the numbers are such that it cant haen in 10 weeks time, will it still be a possibility with spectators etc one month later?

What he had to say was tyically long winded and reetitive but here is the situation in his eyes.
Boost Mobile boss Peter Adderton is calling for Supercars to postpone this year’s Repco Bathurst 1000 to avoid a repeat of the 2020 “ghost town”.

New South Wales continues to grapple with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, recording 136 new locally acquired cases overnight.

Today, New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian called on the Federal Government to focus the vaccine rollout on Sydney to curb case numbers.

The Premier said it’s hoped the state will live “as freely and safely as possible during August, September and October” and then be at a stage by the end of October where more of the population is vaccinated and can live “much more freely beyond that point”.

The escalating situation in New South Wales has already wreaked havoc on the Supercars calendar, resulting in the postponement of the long-awaited Sydney SuperNight.

While this year’s Bathurst 1000 is still the best part of two and a half months away – slated for October 7-10 – Adderton argued that Supercars and its sponsors cannot have a repeat of last year’s event as COVID-19 cases rise in the state.

That saw the race go ahead with a daily cap of 4000 spectators at Mount Panorama with no access to the top of the mountain and no camping among the restrictions.

“It’s too big a race to risk it and to take a wait and see approach. I think it’s prudent for Supercars to move the race; otherwise, we’re going to have the same situation [as 2020] where there’s no fans.

“We won’t be there with Greg [Murphy] and Richie [Stanaway], but more importantly, the fans won’t be able to see it. What’s the point?

“I think they’ve got to make the call now. They always take a wait and see approach and you can’t afford to do that anymore. You just can’t afford to do that.

“I think they’ve got to delay it now and give themselves more time to have Sydney work this COVID situation through to make sure that the race can be the best it can be.

“I was there last year when you couldn’t go from the pits, it was terrible, it was basically a ghost town,” he added.

“It just wasn’t Bathurst, so I think they’ve got to move it because so many people are trying to plan things.

“I just think that right now, knowing what we all know, the wait and see approach is the mistake. They’re not just going to let 40,000 people up on The Mountain in October. She’s not going to do it.

“What you’re going to have is half-hearted Bathurst, which is basically made for TV.

“That’s not what makes Bathurst great. All they need to do is move it back three or four weeks to give themselves a window to be able to have enough people vaccinated and give the government a comfort level that they can open back up.”

Today Premier Berejiklian indicated that the current lockdown, which is slated to end on July 30, is likely to continue.

Adderton has several vested interests in this year’s Great Race including that of Erebus Motorsport’s Brodie Kostecki, Tickford Racing’s James Courtney, and Triple Eight Race Engineering Super2 Series leader Broc Feeney.

Namely of concern is the Erebus Motorsport run wildcard of Greg Murphy and Richie Stanaway.

The pair were set to test with the team on August 11 at Winton Motor Raceway, though that’s unlikely to happen with news that the trans-Tasman bubble has been halted.

That’s set to last for at least eight weeks until September 17, just a little under a month out from the Bathurst 1000.

Whether the wildcard goes ahead is in question too, with Adderton unsure when their first test will take place or whether they’ll be able to compete.

Adderton said the wider Supercars community needs more time to plan and ensure fans can attend.

“I don’t know why we would be so precious not to do it now, give everybody time to plan and get it right,” he explained.

“I’m calling on Supercars to make the decision now to work with the government to push that back to the end of October, early part of November and do it now, not a wait and see approach.

“As a sponsor, we obviously want to see the race take place and have everybody there, so I think Supercars has to give everybody a lot of warning and do it now and not wait.

“People are trying to do camping, corporate hospitality, you’ve got New Zealand who have locked us out to the end of September, beginning of October, a lot of the corporates come from New Zealand as well.

“So, this is something that I think the guys need to make that decision now.”

Grove Racing complete total takeover of Kelly team

Just announced is news that the Grove Group is set to take 100 percent ownership of Kelly Grove Racing.

In January it was announced the Grove Group had acquired a 50 percent stake in Kelly Racing alongside brothers Todd and Rick Kelly.
Come January 1, 2022, the team will be known as Grove Racing having acquired the other 50 percent stake owned by the brothers.

That will see Stephen Grove become team principal, taking over from boss Todd Kelly who will depart the team. (Rick having pretty much already done so)
From Stephen Grove
“It began where we assessed entering Supercars and then we assessed pre-Christmas whether there was an opportunity to do our own things, get our own licences, get some RECs [Racing Entitlements Contracts] and go down that way,” Grove explained.

“Then we had some discussions with the Kellys, with Todd, and then decided that there was a good partnership we could form there.

“For us, 100 percent ownership was probably something we were aiming to do. We sort of did the deal and then decided to keep talking about taking a full 100 percent ownership of it.”
It is just the race team that is now Grove 100%, and Kelly Engineering will remain in the Kelly family.... they will continue to provide technical assistance to the race team, still manufacture specialist parts for Grove Racing, as well as to continue to do other outside engineering work in Motorsports and other areas.

An end to an era really without the Kelly's around.... must be over 20 years since the Kelly name popped up in Supercars. In that time they have built and raced Holden, Nissan and now Ford winning races and more with each manufacturer. For many years they ran 4 cars in V8SC

and Kelly Racing first took over Larry Perkins outfit, is that right?

Pretty much so. Of course there was a link there prior as well, as Todd Kelly left HRT to join Larry when Perkins Engineering was still in force Im not sure of the exact details but after TK left Larry and he and RK set up Kelly Racing running Holdens certainly by the time a couple of years later when the Nissan thing came along I know the Kelly's had bought the REC's from Larry. Im sure Larry stopped running his team full time when Kelly set up in 2009. I know at the time Jack was forced to (temporarily) stop racing due to I think diabetes or some medical issue that needed that to happen short term

They certainly took on a load of LP's staff when they first set up Kelly Racing (I think it was) and a lot of equipment (cars etc) prior to the Nissan thing. Of course the Jack Daniels sponsorship that was with Perkins moved to Kelly at the same time when Kelly first started with their own team ISTR.

I think they (the Kelly family) had already owned the REC's they ran under with Walkinshaw, and I think the Larry RECs deal was done for the expansion to the 4 car Nissan team. Maybe even they left the REC's owned by Larry with him until they expanded to the Nissan thing.

Plus of course Jack Perkins drove for them in the Norton's backed car when Todd left Larry to Kelly Racing was formed a couple of years prior.

Bottom line is is some way or other certainly there was a lot of Perkins DNA in what was started as Kelly Racing. Just the exact details of when and what happened is a bit vague in my head. A long time ago.

Edit: Actually a quick search after I posted came up with this...

Some bits from what was written in Autosport tonight are quite interesting. Namely the Kelly Bros will retain ownership of the cars. The engineering side we knew they were keeping, and they would remain involved in that way.
According to the announcement, the Kelly Racing business will retain the machine shop, engine departments and the team's current Ford Mustangs.

It's expected that Todd Kelly will step down from the team boss role, but will continue to operate Kelly Racing as a technical partner with Grove Racing.
In Todd's own words
"Kelly Racing will retain full ownership of the team CNC machine shop, the engine department and all production departments as well as the current Mustangs. I will still be working hard in the background in 2022 to continue maintaining and developing the current package for the team."
I was pretty close to the mark with the evolution of Perkins to Kelly Racing in the previous post. I had forgotten they started with 4 cars , not just from Nissan days......

KGR started out as a four-car Holden team set up ahead of the 2009 season using two Racing Entitlements Contracts owned by the Kelly family, and another two owned by Perkins Engineering which Kelly later purchased for the Nissan project.
The team continued to run Holdens for Todd, the 2005 Bathurst 1000 winner, and 2003-04 Bathurst winner Rick, along with a rotation of other team-mates until the end of 2012 when the Kellys struck a deal to become the factory Nissan team in Supercars.

At that point, the Perkins-owned RECs were formally handed over to what was re-branded as Nissan Motorsport.

The Kellys developed the Supercars-spec Altima and a Nissan V8 race engine based on an SUV powerplant and enjoyed factory backing until the end of the 2018 season.

By then Todd had already retired to focus on the team boss role, KR continuing with the four Altimas for a single season as a privateer outfit before striking a deal with Ford to switch to Mustangs for 2020.

That coincided with a scaling back to two cars, 2006 series champion Rick teaming up with Andre Heimgartner for that 2020 season before he made a shock decision to retire at the end of the campaign - being replaced by former Erebus driver David Reynolds.

Where does this leave Heimgartner?

I guess one of the side issues that comes out of the transformation of Kelly Racing to next years Grove Racing, is what effect that will have on Heimgartner. Andre is out of contract at the end of the year.... he has always professed of his loyalty to the Kelly Bros for basically giving him the lifeline that kept his V8SC aspirations alive. He replaced Todd Kelly in the team, in a late call up when he was unable to even get an ongoing co driver role. Without the Kelly lifeline he would he believes have been back in NZ looking for a 9-5 career.

However, with the possible opportunities elsewhere (I am obviously thinking T888) will his loyalties to the team have altered given the ownership changes. Will his loyalty stretch to the Grove set up?

Having thrown that option in, he has been quick to say his belief in the Grove family is there and he believes the team will prosper as a result. But how much of that is "saying the right thing" and not ruffling feathers (ie not shitting on his own doorstep). Im sure he has been in touch with Roland to check out the land and get an update on what T888's current stance is on the JW replacement beyond what has been in the press.

He fits the profile of what T888 are looking for. Proven race-winning ability, young (he is 26), V8SC experienced etc, plus of course available in terms of being out of contract at the year end. A T888 opportunity would be hard to knock back... Obviously Feeney is a favourite for the gig and potentially the next SVG/ JW, and the Earl Bamber name has been thrown in a lot of late. My thoughts of Bamber is he seems very happy with his Porsche alignment in Europe, and of course has a German wife who might not like the idea of moving to Australia. With all respect a factory gig with Porsche is (to me) a lot further up the ladder than a top ride in what is a regional Tin Top series. Of course he knows better than I or others know about what his future with Porsche might have in the wings. Happy wife = happy life they say, and throw in a monthly cheque from a factory set up like Porsche.....
