Huge entry list for opening round of the VLN series at the Nürburgring…

A total of 171 cars will take part in the opening round of the VLN series on the Nürburgring Nordschleife this weekend.

The grid for the four-hour Westfalenfahrt race features 25 GT3-homologated cars spread across seven manufacturers, with 24 car makes throughout the entire field.

Defending VLN Speed Trophy champion Falken Motorsports returns to the series with a Porsche 911 GT3 R, along with 2018 runner-up Frikadelli Racing Team.

Falken also has a BMW M6 GT3 entered, while Frikadelli – which has two Porsches listed – was one of two teams to publicly decry a recent Balance of Performance change that will see GT3 cars slowed by 5% in line with safety concerns.

The other team that protested the adjustment, WTM Racing, is not on the entry list.

New to the GT3 field are the Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 efforts from KCMG and Japanese Super GT outfit Kondo Racing, which are fielding a car each.

There is also a Chrysler Viper GT3-R entered by Zakspeed with Florian Strauss the only driver listed so far in the Pro-Am lineup, while Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus returns with a red and white livery for its SPX-class SCG 003C special.

Defending Westfalenfahrt winners Patrick Pilet and Frederic Makowiecki return without 2018 co-pilot Romain Dumas in one of two Manthey Racing-entered Porsches, with the other to be shared by Earl Bamber and Laurens Vanthoor.

Audi’s GT3 customer program is represented by Montaplast by Land-Motorsport, Car Collection Motorsport and Phoenix Racing (two cars) while Mercedes-AMG is backed by entries from Black Falcon, HTP Motorsport, GetSpeed Performance and Rooster Rojo J2Racing.

There are also six BMWs including a double entry for ROWE Racing and three cars for Walkenhorst Motorsport, in addition to the Falken machine.

1990 Le Mans 24 Hours winner Martin Brundle will be in the field, co-driving an Aston Martin Vantage V8 in the SP8 class with Marco Mueller and Alexander West.

Other notable drivers include Intercontinental GT Challenge champion Tristan Vautier at the wheel of the No. 2 GetSpeed Mercedes, and Carlos Tavares, chairman of the managing board at Peugeot-Citroen, who is driving an Opel Astra GTC.

Round 1 of the VLN is set to get underway at 12 p.m. local time (7 a.m. eastern) on Saturday, March 23 with live English coverage available on the series’ YouTube channel.

ROWE Racing BMW Wins Shortened VLN Season-Opener

John Edwards’ late pass hands ROWE victory on the Nordschleife…

Image

John Edwards made a last-lap pass for the lead on Porsche driver Patrick Pilet to earn the ROWE Racing BMW squad victory in the opening VLN race of the season.

Edwards, who shared driving duties in the No. 99 BMW M6 GT3 with Nicky Catsburg and Marco Wittmann, got past Pilet in the No. 912 Porsche 911 GT3 R and pulled out a five-second gap at the finish.

Pilet was only just ahead of Edwards heading onto the final lap after drafting his way around the ROWE driver on the Döttinger Höhe straight to take the lead with 18 minutes to go.

The pair went on to battle through the Nordschleife forest with the BMW coming off best to deny the Manthey Racing squad a third consecutive victory in the Westfalenfahrt four-hour race.

However, this year’s season-opener actually ran to a condensed 2-hour, 45-minute duration after heavy fog in the morning forced the race organizers to push back the start time by three hours.

When racing got underway, Connor de Phillippi led the field in the pole-sitting No. 98 ROWE BMW which controlled the opening stanza before fading as the pit stops played out.

The ROWE squad’s No. 98 car, on the other hand, moved up through the field with each of its stints lasting a lap longer than its sister machine.

Both of the Total 24 Hours of Spa-winning team’s BMWs ended up on the podium after Mikkel Jensen overtook Markus Winkelhock in the No. 32 Car Collection Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo in the final stint.

Winkelhock was then forced to make a late splash for fuel at the end of the penultimate lap to promote the Falken Motorsports Porsche of Klaus Bachler and Joerg Bergmeister into fourth.

Jensen, who shared the No. 98 BMW with with De Phillippi and Tom Blomqvist, finished 16 seconds off the winning No. 99 entry with Bachler right on his tail at the checkered flag.

Frikadelli Racing’s Porsche came through in fifth, ahead of the No. 5 Phoenix Audi, while the No. 48 HTP Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GT3 finished seventh.

The No. 911 Manthey Porsche of defending race winners Earl Bamber and Laurens Vanthoor retired after contact on the opening lap.

SP9 Pro-Am class honors went to Walkenhorst Motorsport and its BMW M6 GT3 driven by Jody Fannin, Immanuel Vinke and Rudi Adams which led home a 1-2 for the German team.

Good racing from what I watched. Until the fog came in.

Wow nice. Any video footage of that? I missed the race, I was out until late tonight, but the stream still appears to be up.

If there is any footage, it has to be from spectators. There are not that many camera's at a VLN meeting. The track is simply too big.

Great, thanks! The car even put itself the other side of the barrier to save the marshals any trouble.
