2018 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000

We always have an exclusive thread for what is one of the World of Motor Sport's most iconic and followed events, the Bathurst 1000 klms.

This year the race is to be held on its usual first weekend in October, this year specifically 4 to 7 October 2018.

Obviously the race is to be held at Mount Panorama, and will be Round 13 of the 2018 VASC Championship.

From last years thread some borrowed info:

BATHURST & MOTOR RACING
Bathurst has had a long association with motor racing, for both cars and motorcycles.

Motorcycle racing is generally believed to have started in Bathurst around 1911 on the roads in the Kelso/Sunny Corner area. Today, the Long Track is a highly popular inclusion on the Motorcycling Australia calendar as is the new Supermotard competition. Panorama Motorcycle Club runs the motocross track at the top of Mount Panorama, with regular club meets.

Speedway style racing commenced in 1931 on what was known as the Vale Circuit. This continued until 1937, when the newly-built circuit at Mount Panorama was completed. The first race was held there in March 1938.

Mount Panorama has hosted various Australian Grand Prix, for both motor-cycles and open four-wheelers and, since October 1963, has been both the spiritual and physical home of touring car racing in this country.

Today, the City of Bathurst is virtually synonymous with motor racing, known throughout the world because of its challenging and picturesque motor racing circuit.

THE CIRCUIT

Originally constructed in 1938 as a scenic tourist drive, Mount Panorama has hosted all types of motorsport including the world famous Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, the annual 12 Hour GT race, 24 Hour endurance races and the Easter motorcycle meetings.

The circuit is public road on non-race weekends and has also hosted the Australian Grand Prix in the past. It remains one of the all-time favourite circuits of V8 Supercar drivers and is ranked among the great race tracks of the world.

Circuit Overview

Location: Bathurst, New South Wales
Length: 6.21 kilometres
Direction: Anti-Clockwise
Maximum speed: 300km/h
Fastest Point: Conrod Straight
Average Speed: 178km/h

Just chuck in that at it's steepest the gradient is 1:6. Serious shit.

Race history

The race has a long and colourful history, having been conducted for numerous categories such as production cars, Group C, Group A, Super Touring and currently the popular V8 Supercar category.

Although the Bathurst 1000 is today run by just two marques, Ford and Holden, makes as diverse as Mini, Jaguar, BMW, Nissan and Volvo have also tasted success at "The Mountain". Holden has the most victories at Bathurst with 25 wins, while Ford has 16 (or 17 if including the victory from the 1962 Phillip Island event).

Mount Panorama at Bathurst is 210 kilometres west of Sydney and is the focal point of Australian Motor Racing. The six kilometre anti clockwise track is normally a public road and was first used in 1938, with Easter Sunday motorcycle racing. However, World War II intervened, and racing didn't resume until 1947, with the Australian Grand Prix. Further Grand Prix meetings were held in 1952 and 1954. However, the feature event of the Mount Panorama circuit is the Bathurst 1000, held in October each year for touring cars and the track has undergone many changes in the interest of safety over the years.

The Great Race was first held in 1960 at Phillip Island as the Armstrong 500. The race was originally over 130 laps or 500 miles and was originally conceived as the ultimate endurance test of production cars. The early races were separated into classes according to buying price, that way the public knew what their buying dollar would bring in terms of performance and reliability. Bob Jane and Harry Firth were the stars of the early races winning in a Falcon and Mercedes.

The race moved to Mt Panorama in 1963 after the track at Phillip Island, in Victoria, needed resurfacing after the 1962 race. The original line of thought was that Bathurst was made for small cars because the big V8s struggled due to excessive wear of tyres and brakes. But the Mini Cooper S victory in 1966 was in fact the last time a normally aspirated 4 cylinder car has taken outright honours at Bathurst.

The following year a V8 finally won, the XR Falcon GT of Firth and Fred Gibson. Holden scored its first win the next year in a Monaro and in 1969 as well. Allan Moffat then dominated the race in 1970 and 1971 to create the Falcon GTHO legend.

Holden had by this stage dropped the V8 from its racing program to race a light weight car powered by a six cylinder, triple carburetted engine, the LJ Torana XU-1. Peter Brock won in 1972 thanks to its superior fuel economy and handling in the wet conditions.

Bathurst was now seen as the most important race to car companies with the catch phrase being, "Win On Sunday, Sell On Monday". With that in mind the Big Three (Ford, Holden & Chrysler) set about making Bathurst specials, race cars to be sold as road cars. Ford had the Phase Four Falcon GTHO, Holden the XU-2 (a V8 powered LJ Torana) and Chrysler had the Charger V8. An article about these developing Supercars saw the government ban such projects and these Supercars became stillborn.

In 1973 the race changed to 163 laps or 1000 kilometres, hence the name. Meanwhile Brock looked set to win again in 1973 until his car ran out of fuel to allow Moffat to win in a XA Falcon GT. The return of the Holden V8 to racing saw wins in 1975 and 1976. Moffat then engineered the classic Ford 1-2 victory in 1977 but after Brock returned to the Holden Dealer Team he won from 1978 - 1984, the exception being in 1981when Dick Johnson won a shortened race (120 laps). The race was stopped after Bob Morris and Christine Gibson in XD Falcons collided at McPhillamy Park to cause a multiple pile up. After the 1981 race the track was widened at McPhillamy Park to allow crashed cars to leave the race track.

A Dick Johnson crash in qualifying, when his car went through the trees at Forrest Elbow in 1983, prompted safety fences to be installed all the way around the circuit and the pit entrance moved from Pit Straight to the end of Conrod Straight.

By the end of 1984 the Bathurst race was no longer a production car race, the cars were looking more like sport sedans, so a change was needed to renew public interest. The advent of Group A in 1985 saw the demise of the Ford Falcon, Nissan Bluebird, Mazda RX7 and the Chevrolet Camaro replaced with Jaguars, BMWs and Volvo Turbos. The BMW, despite winning the Australian Touring Car Championship, ran second to the Tom Walkinshaw Jaguars in 1985.

Allan Grice returned the Commodore to the winners list in 1986. A fatal race accident on Conrod Straight in the 1986 race, when Mike Burgmann struck the Bridgestone bridge, added the Caltex Chase to the circuit, to not limit the speed down Conrod Straight but to reduce the length of time cars travelled at high speed. The subsequent addition of the chase reduced the number of laps. The Bathurst 1000 now comprises 161 laps, in all more than 6 hours of fast and furious motor racing.

The Ford Sierra Turbo arrived in 1987 to win the race (later disqualified) but despite being the fastest car at that time it was also unreliable. Turbos were a lap to lap proposition, but despite the high attrition rate of Sierra race cars they won in 1988 and 1989. In 1990 a Commodore won due to all the leading Sierras breaking down.

By 1991 Nissan had fully developed the ultimate Group A race car, the twin turbo six cylinder 4WD Nissan GT-R. Nissan won twice, in 1991 and in 1992 when torrential rain lashed the circuit and caused chaos as cars on slick tyres spun off the circuit at an alarming rate. The race was red flagged after the 143rd lap only for the sun to reappear within ten minutes! But their dominance caused a change in the rules again.

A return to the old Holden - Ford V8 war was hoped to renew interest in touring car racing. By 1993 turbos were no more and Larry Perkins became a hero by beating former Nissan drivers, Jim Richards and Mark Skaife. In 1994 Johnson and John Bowe won the race in a Falcon over a 20 year old rookie, Craig Lowndes, and in 1995 Perkins reaffirmed his hero status when he drove from last place to win.

The 1996 race commenced in a downpour, but 22 year old Craig Lowndes and 24 year old Greg Murphy dominated, becoming the youngest drivers to win, and Lowndes became only the second driver, after Peter Brock, to win the Touring Car Championship, Sandown 500 and Bathurst 1000 in the same year, all in his rookie year.

But this is part of what makes the Bathurst 1000 remain one of Australia's most popular motor races, bringing tens-of-thousands of visitors to the city of Bathurst for the October long weekend.

PREVIOUS NAMES OF 'THE GREAT RACE'

The race has changed names several times over the years to reflect naming rights sponsorship, and the change in race distance from 500 miles to 1000 kilometres (approx. 621 miles).

Famous winners

The most successful driver at Bathurst is the late Peter Brock, whose nine victories (1972, 1975, 1978-80, 1982-84 and 1987) earned him the nickname King of the Mountain.

Jim Richards has won the race seven times (1978-80, 1991-92, 1998 and 2002) and also holds the record for the most starts (35) at this event. Larry Perkins is the third most successful driver at Bathurst, with six victories (1982-84, 1993, 1995 and 1997). Both Richards and Perkins have shared some of their victories as co-drivers with Brock.

Canadian-born Allan Moffat is considered by many to be Ford's greatest Bathurst driver, winning the race four times (1970, 1971, 1973 and 1977). The 1977 race saw Moffat and team-mate Colin Bond cross the finish line side by side after opening up an indomitable lead in the early laps.

Mark Skaife has won six times, his first was in 1991, with a Nissan Skyline GT-R. He also won in 1992 in the same car, and in 2001,2002 and 2005 in a Holden Commodore. Final win was with Craig Lowndes in 2010

Craig Lowndes has won 6 '1000's.

Dick Johnson first rose to fame during the 1980 race when his privately-entered Ford Falcon hit a rock that had fallen (or been pushed; the subject is still debated to this day) onto the track. Thanks to public donations of over AU$70,000 - and a matching donation from Ford Motor Company - Johnson was able to rebuild his car and win the Bathurst race the following year. He went on to win twice more, in 1989 and 1994.

Kiwi born Greg Murphy has won 4 times

Dave Reynolds in the Erebus Commodore.... the final lap.

Erebus Motorsport drivers David Reynolds and Luke Youlden are the defending race winners.

Starting from the front row, the Erebus Motorsport Penrite Racing #9 Commodore was amongst the front-runners all day, however, it wasn’t until the final laps until it all played to their favour.

David Reynolds sat fourth on the final restart with just 16 laps to the checkered flag and capitalized on other’s errors to catapult into the top spot. It was a faultless run from both drivers to the very end of lap 161.

Interestingly, and it has made a lot of local news in Aus, there is a collection of alleged Brock raced and owned cars from a famous collector who has decided to reinvest some of his money elsewhere. Problem is that as the (online) auction progresses as part of the build up to Bathurst, with the bidding I think finishing on race weekend, it is becoming more and more clear that the provinance on many of the 'Brock' raced / owned cars are nothing more than at best replicas, or bitzas assembled from non race parts, crash write-offs rebuilt with non race bodyshells etc.

There is a lot of serious money having been punted on so called cars from his past that just are not worth the money. Fr instance the famour A35 which started it all is being offered for sale but this is known to be a complete recent recreation using no genuine parts. Fortunately bidding on this reflects the lack of history at about $30,000. still a lot for nothing of any note. Other bids are well into the hundreds of thousands and one was over a million although the lot has since mysteriously vanished from the site.

People involved in the original projects seem to be remaining very secretive although others have given accounts of their true history... who do you believe though at the end of the day. Andrew Medeke, who was co owner of a (Rouse built) Sierra he once raced with Brock says there are 3 Sierras all claiming to be the genuine Bathurst race car... apparently he 'knows' the one currently being bid upon is a promotional car built up from bits in Medieke's Ford dealership, painted in Mobil colours and used as a showroom demo model. (Currently bidding is at c $650000.)
He sold that car on as a promo vehicle. One of the 3 is certainly in the UK. Another was crashed in testing by Barry Sheene, later rebuilt but then crushed to avoid import duties owed.

The problem is that back in the day no one had even a clue of the future value of genuine race cars, especially those owned and raced by legends, and back in the day cars were mocked up for museums, promotions etc with no intent of them ever being seen as genuine cars. Others were reshelled with bits lying around. Then people start seeing easy money and fraudulently offer them as genuine with a 'watertight' bullshit story behind them and people get sucked in. Then someone who knows better speaks up and shit hits fan as others realise they have been badly duped.

Ford, who announced they are bringing one of their Le Mans Ford GTs to do some demo laps are now expanding on that theme with a run off between the LM car, a GT4 Mustang and a V8 Supercar. It will of course mark the end of the Falcon at Bathurst with the Ford teams running the Mustang next year.

Image
An example of the Le Mans 24 Hour winning Ford GT will go up against a Ford Mustang GT4 and a Falcon Supercar in special demonstration at this weekend’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

Ford Performance has brought two of its latest on-track weapons to Mount Panorama headlined by a Chip Ganassi Racing prepared GT, which will be driven by Australian Ryan Briscoe, who regularly pilots the car in the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship.

The Blue Oval, which revealed a plan for the GT last month, has confirmed that it will now be joined on the famous 6.2km track by a Mustang GT4, driven by Shell V-Power Racing co-driver Tony D’Alberto, and the Milwaukee Racing Falcon FGX piloted by Alex Davison.

The manufacturer expects the GT to be the fastest Ford to lap the circuit.

Briscoe has been preparing for the outing by undertaking laps in Ford’s simulator in the US.

Details regarding the format of the event are yet to be revealed although Ford has described it as ‘a thrilling display of Ford’s global performance capability.’

“We’re proud to bring Ford Performance to Supercars and proud of our heritage in the sport,” said Ford Australia and New Zealand President and CEO, Kay Hart.

“The teams that design, build, work on and race Ford products are some of our greatest assets when it comes to developing new technologies that ultimately improve the performance of our road-going vehicles.”

The appearance of a Mustang GT4 will be a first for the car in Australia.

It is powered a 5.2-litre Coyote V8, a direct derivative of the engine under the bonnet of the road-going Ford Mustang in Australian dealerships.

“Getting an opportunity to pilot this car around Mount Panorama is massively exciting,” said D’Alberto.

“We’re making the change to Mustang in Supercars for 2019, so to be getting a run in that iconic shape around Bathurst a year early is a privilege.

“Allan Moffat’s Trans-Am Mustang was a monster, and the GT4 is the modern version of that, so I can’t wait to feel and hear its thumping V8 bellowing up and down the Mountain.”

This year’s Great Race will be the last for the famous Falcon nameplate with the model, that has won Bathurst 14 times, due to be replaced by the Mustang in 2019.

“It’s a great opportunity for our last Bathurst with the FG X Falcon to put it up against some of the fastest Fords in the world,” said Davison.

“I feel really lucky – it’s an absolute privilege to be part of.”

Plenty of new liveries on show this weekend

Keeping with Ford for a sec Tickford are running a Falcon tribute, using the famous old swooping falcon logo on the Rabble car. To mark the milestone the words ‘Falcon’s final flight’ have been placed above the Falcon graphic that made its debut at the team in 2003 and was last used in 2014.

Image

Not so keen on their Bottle O livery which is a bit of a Mustang look, although there are shades of the K-Tel Falcon of I thing Goss from the 70's.

Re the Falcon and its historic finale this year,
Over the years the Falcon has scored 14 of Blue Oval’s 19 Bathurst wins with the first arriving in 1967 courtesy of Harry Firth and Fred Gibson.

Supercars has organised a special tribute to the Ford model at this year’s race, which will feature several famous racing Falcons from the past.

“It’s a small tribute to a car which obviously we have quite a history with,” said Tickford team boss Tim Edwards.

“Every win we’ve ever had has, of course, been with the Falcon, so it’s a bittersweet farewell as we look to next year, but we’d definitely like to give it a proper send off in its last Bathurst 1000.”

I managed 90% but have to admit I got a couple of answers from luck more than actual knowledge, generally reading up on stuff earlier when I was looking for things to post about the race. One was a lucky guess as well.... and the one I got wrong I should have gone with my gut rather than what I thought I had read.

Interestingly, those attending the races this weekend (and camping as most do) will continue to have daily limits as to how much alcohol each adult may bring in with them.

However looking at the rules no one will be going thirsty, with the following limits PER DAY and PER PERSON:
Alcohol limits for the 2018 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 campgrounds are as follows per person
per day:
a) 1x carton (Slab) of full strength beer (5% alcohol or less) - 24 cans
b) 1x carton of light / mid strength beer (3.5% alcohol or less) - 30 cans
c) 1x carton of pre-mixed spirits (6% alcohol or less) – 24 cans x 375mls,
d) 1x carton of cider (5% alcohol or less) – 24 cans x 375mls, or
e) 1x cask of sealed wine totalling 4 litres or less, or
f) 1x 750ml bottle of spirits (Plastic only),
g) 2x 375ml plastic bottles of spirits (38 % alcohol or less) - must be the original manufacturer’s
product with seal unopened

No glass what so ever is to be brought into the campgrounds, this includes jars over 200mL.
Please note: You can only bring in One (1) day’s alcohol supply at a time. There is no storage facility
for excess alcohol and any alcohol over the daily limit will be confiscated and disposed of.

IS THERE SOMEWHERE TO CHECK IN EXCESS ALCOHOL?

A few more snippets from the V8Supercars website
Fast Facts: Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000

1. This year marks the 58th running of the event now known as the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

First held at Bathurst in 1963 as the Armstrong 500, The Great Race has featured at Mount Panorama ever since, shifting from 500-miles to 1000km in '73.

It should be noted that there were two races held in 1997 and '98, one for V8 Supercars and one for two-litre Super Tourers. Both are counted in race history books.

2. The most popular grid position for Bathurst winners is a tie between the two places on the front row.

The polesitting car has won the race a total of 11 times, while cars starting second – including David Reynolds/Luke Youlden last year – have also won on 11 different occasions.

The last time the polesitting car went on to win the race was 2009, with Garth Tander and Will Davison for the Holden Racing Team.

3. This year marks the 45th and final Bathurst 1000 for Ford’s Falcon nameplate before the return of Mustang in 2019.

The Falcon made its Bathurst enduro debut in 1967 and won first time out with the late Harry Firth and Fred Gibson aboard a factory-entered XR GT.

It has given Ford 14 of its 19 wins in the Bathurst classic, the most recent in 2014 with Chaz Mostert and Paul Morris.

4. The closest Bathurst race finish between competing cars – as opposed to team-mates lining up for a formation finish – is 0.1434 seconds in 2016 between Will Davison and Shane van Gisbergen.

Richards claimed the first of his four Bathurst victories in 1998 with Jason Bright

5. The most-experienced Bathurst 1000 driver in the 2018 field is Steve Richards on 26, one ahead of the man he'll drive with, Craig Lowndes.

Just five drivers have more Great Race starts than the four-time winner - Steve’s father Jim Richards, the late Peter Brock, Colin Bond, Bruce Stewart and Bob Holden.

6. There are four Bathurst 1000 rookies in this year’s field but none are rookies at the Mount Panorama circuit.

Kiwi Earl Bamber has been a class winner in the Bathurst 12 Hour while Anton De Pasquale, Will Brown and Bryce Fullwood all have competed there in the Dunlop Super2 Series.

7. There are 14 winners of the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 in this year's field of 52 drivers for the 26 cars.

Another 12 drivers have finished on the Bathurst podium before but not won the race.

8. This year’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 is Garry Rogers Motorsport’s 700th Supercars Championship race.

GRM won the race in 2000 with Garth Tander and Jason Bargwanna and last scored a podium finish at Mount Panorama in '09 with Lee Holdsworth and Michael Caruso.

9. The most Safety Car periods in a Bathurst 1000 is 13 in the 2000 race. The most laps affected by the Safety Car is 48 of the 161 laps in the 2006 race.

10. The record for the most cars on the lead lap at the end of the Bathurst 1000 is 19 in 2010 '11, '12 and '13.

Last year, 10 cars were on the lead lap at the end of the rain-affected race, with 20 of the 26 starters classified as finishers.

There's no beer in Australia that has more than 5% of alcohol? Man, that's weak!

I like the 24 cans per person per day idea though ;)
