VLN 2015

#1

Post by Andy »

Race one of VLN 2015 took place today and was red flagged after Jann Mardenboroughs Nissan flipped over the catch fence at post 80 in Flugplatz section.

Several spectators have been injured and one died on the way to the circuit hospital.

Thoughts go out to the victims , their families and to Jann, too.

RIP

Woah, it must have been a huge accident to end up over the other side of the fence. Sympathy for the victims involved :( Was the VLN race televised?

Video of the accident which shows what happened. The car going into the spectator area is not in shot so there are no graphic details of the aftermath

Warning video shows an accident where a spectator was killed

Could have an impact on the WTCC race when the FIA over reacts.

No fucking way. I never expected it to have taken off like that.

Can someone please save this video in case it is removed from YouTube?

RIP to the spectator and best wishes to the others injured, and not forgetting Jann Mardenborough.

Looking at the pictures and the videos I've seen, were the spectators behind the second fence or just the first?

A second video has emerged, the car gets air so early

Looking at the photos available the ground plate of the Nissan looks flat , almost even. How this bottom is meant to generate any grip is fairly beyond me. It doesnt really look like there are holes or channels to let air pass through, so once the front gets loose the air pushes directly into the bottom and lifts the car up.
I'm far off laying blame on the circuit here. It should be known by now that the Flugplatz is a place where the front can indeed get a wee bit loose. The car should be developed to suit the circuit, not the other way round.
Or did this art got lost with the parking lot'o'dromes of today ?

I tend to think that it could have been a marshal who got killed there as the zone between the fences is marshals zone only normally and the crowd only gets as far as the second lower (guidance) fence.

Some people on Twitter were saying the area between the two fences is open to the public, even showing some photo's of people sitting in chairs directly behind the fence.

The way that car took off, especially in the second video, it wouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility for something in the rear end to have broken causing the car to squat down in the compression nose up just enough past the tipping point that it was only ever going to go skywards when it reached the crest.

I really hope they don't flatten that section as a result, IIRC it's been flattened already once at the crest. Move the spectators or put bigger fences in, don't fuck the circuit please!
I am very sorry if you find my posts long and boring, I like to type and often go off on a tangent.
If this is the case, you may click here to solve the problem, or alternatively here too.

In the first overhaul in 1970/1971 they eased off the Flugplatz at the crest. Also the removed the bumps and jumps at Kesselchen, Schwalbenschwanz and Brünnchen.

In every VLN race you will see a lot of GT3 cars lift their nose a bit at the jump before Flugplatz. The way this Nissan flipped really amazes me. The cars don't reach such a high speed there. 220-240kmh ? maybe.
