I guess those who have followed the varying categories of our main touring car categories through the years will remember the Dick Johnson Racing Fords were for many years heavily backed and liveried in Shell Colours.

The nostalgistes amongst us will no doubt approve of the fact that one of the main backers of the new Penske DJR Ford for the V8SC will be Shell, and the livery for Marcos Ambrose’s Ford at the season opening Clipsal 500 Adelaide is definitely one with a familiar look... (Pic below)

DJR Team Penske will rotate primary sponsors throughout the season, with Xbox, Western Star and MAN Trucks among others on the roster.

The Shell scheme will run at two events, with July’s Townsville 400 also expected to feature the red and white colours.

Shell had been DJR’s major backer from 1987 through to 2004, with the partnership yielding three Australian Touring Car Championships and two Bathurst 1000s.

Cool stuff.

Why does the Falcon FGX look exactly like the Fusion that's used in NASCAR?

So day 1 of racing (at the Clipsal 500) for the V8 Supercars season is over.
Whincup won race 1 easily in a fairly subdued race. By far and away the most interesting moment was when McLaughlin's car suddenly burst into flames on the warm-up lap with a blown oil pump (he was fine and they got the car running in race 2 after an engine change.) Race 2 however was a lot more interesting. Coulthard won. Whincup blew a tire at turn 8, but somehow avoided crashing. He did however end up 21st, as the last car still running. McLaughlin took the lead at the start but was given a 10 second penalty to be served during a pitstop. However he did it during a caution (illegally) and this resulted in an additional 10 second penalty after the race. There was some good racing on top of it all, especially after a SC in the last 10 or so laps.

Ambrose wasn't particularly competitive. He did end up 16th in the second race.

James Courtney won the third race (and the whole event as a result). He had a good battle with Van Gisbergen in the final laps. Meanwhile, there was a big shunt on the final lap when Whincup (of all people) spun out Mostert and Moffat t-boned him in the driver's door. Fortunately both were OK, although there was big damage to both cars. Ambrose got into the top 10 shootout and finished 12th. Another interesting race.

Great racing! Except for Whincup on the last lap

It's basically the same car country to country. If you look carefully enough, you'll notice that most of Mazda's range are rebadged Fords. The Mazda 6 is based on the Mondeo / Fusion / Falcon FGX.

So T888 now have Lowndes, Whincup, and Van Giz signed up for the next couple of years. Only thing we dont know is whether Red Bull will run the third (ie Van Giz) car as an extension to the current pair or whether Shane will have a new backer.....

Someone opined Ambrose has realized he doesn't have it in him or doesn't want to go thru the season long slugfest and just wants to do the enduros. Sounds good as that'd give Scott Pye a valuable opportunity.

His bubble burst long ago as far as V8SC was concerned. Too much hype and not enough of anything else of the required aspects.

Lowndes won both of the Saturday races at Symmons Plains. A boring couple of races. Biggest drama was a post race conversation, shall we say, between Courtney and Will Davison over an incident which saw Will go backwards in the first race.

Whincup won race 3. Bleh.

That was terrible driving by Lowndes on the first lap. He was the fastest driver all weekend (as shown by his comeback to 6th in the race) without a doubt and he threw it all away, not to mention that he took out Reynolds in the process.

Good story of the weekend goes to Heimgartner, I think. I wasn't expecting him to have anything higher then top 20 pace (maybe top 15 pace) based on his performances at Adelaide & Albert Park, but he had top 10 pace for much of the weekend.

Barbagallo is this weekend.
Race 1 and 2 were both won by Winterbottom. Whincup had a shit qualifying performance in race 1 and ended up in the middle of the pack at the end of the race, before coming 2nd in the 2nd race. Both races were pretty boring.
