Bottom post of the previous page:

For god's sake, don't read this unless you know the results!
As it turned out, Tander's car had problems and was forced to start from the back of the grid, so Winterbottom was on row 1. Winterbottom got the jump but he was left of his start box, so he recieved a ten second penalty at the first pit stop. Meanwhile, Tander and Will Davidson both struck trouble, with Tander's car being damaged and losing 6 laps as a result, while Davison's engine blew on lap 29. In the end, Whincup and Lowndes finished 1-2, with either Courtney or Winterbottom finishing 3rd.

A couple of highlights from Abu Dhabi for me:

As a 888 supporter I was glad to see them take a 1-2, and equally thought the demise of HRT as the #1 Holden team was pretty total with a disaser of a weekend, both cars out of the first race and doing little better in the second.

It has not happened in Australia where a top team has switched brands having won the championship in one, and then opened the next years championship with a whitewash win in a different brand.

Mind you, with the demise of HRT it was not the Holden domination many predicted, with Ford taking the top positions behind the 888 Holdens. I think the top 10 ended up pretty much 50/50 in the end.

Quite amusing comment from one of the Kelly Girls about Paul Morris.
Todd Kelly - #7 Jack Daniel's Racing Holden Commodore:

Referring to Paul Morris ...
"Never in my life have I come across such a peanut of a bloke," said Todd Kelly.

"He's renowned for it and he ought to be congratulated for having a racing license as long as he has because he's a first-class fruit bat.
At least Morris wont be running this weekend as the cars nip down the road to take in the Bahrain 400.... he was only subbing last week for regular driver Greg Murphy who was previously committed to hosting the Top Gear New Zealand live broadcast.

EDIT: Thought it might be good to post the pointscore as of end round 1 at Abu Dhabi (races 1&2)

Bahrain 400 Round 2.

Early practice is showing Vodafone 888 as being the ones to beat again
Good to see Lowndes beating Whincup, hopefully that will be the way in the races too.

As I understand it the V8s are 2 brands only, Ford and Holden, and the only difference is the engine Ford or Holden and the panels tacked on the outside.

Team probably doesn't even know there is a difference!

Well not quite but basically they do have 'Parity' rules that make them similar in chassis performance, although they each are based on their own (albeit heavily modified) chassis. They use a lot of common parts and have similar amounts of aero.

Hopefully it wont be l;ong now before we get a third make involved. With both Ford and Holden reducing the factory input and involvement there is less reason to listen to their duopoly demands.

Not sure if you guys get your qualifying coverage seperate to race coverage but in case there are some who look in here and would be offended, Qualifying report is in the spoiler.
Whincup on Bahrain race one pole

Whincup set the fastest time in qualifying and repeated the feat in the top-ten shootout, despite a couple of moments in the middle of the lap which saw him down a few hundredths of a second starting the final sector, but he recovered to take pole by a quarter of a second.

It meant that Stone Brothers Racing's Shane van Gisbergen will have to wait to claim his maiden pole position, but it was a superb lap regardless to set the second-fastest time, just edging fellow Ford runner Mark Winterbottom's Ford Performance Racing Machine.

Next fastest were Holden Racing Team's Garth Tander and Jim Beam Racing's James Courtney, with Tander's team-mate Will Davison moving up to sixth from tenth before the shootout, Davison just holding out Steven Richards in a return to the front of the grid and a disappointed Craig Lowndes who had set the second-fastest time beforehand.

Completing the top ten runners were the two Paul Morris cars of Greg Murphy and Russell Ingall, both having issues with grip on their lap that saw them well off the pace, both drivers dropping four places down the order.

Just missing out on the shootout in 11th and 12th were Lee Holdsworth and Alex Davison, Holdsworth getting bumped out just 30 seconds before the end of the session.

13th fastest for Rick Kelly was not where he had hoped to be, though it was five places better than brother Todd who had set the third-fastest time overall in yesterday's practice sessions.

The Bundaberg Red team struggled again despite their close links with HRT, 17th for Fabian Coulthard and 21st for Andrew Thompson, though at least they outqualified the three Brad Jones cars of Jason Richards in 22nd, Jason Bright in 24th and Karl Reindler in 28th.

I know she drove in the Bathurst 12 hour modified production race a couple of weeks ago and came in 14th overall, 2nd in class driving an Integra S I think it was. From memory the car was on class pole position, although not sure who did the time (there were 3 drivers per team)

Other than that not sure what regular rides she has.

Actually it was quite amusing at the Bathurst 12 hour.... she was at Bathurst driving, and hubbie Garth was at home in Melbourne watching the cricket on TV, whilst taking part with a few of us in a twitter chat whilst watching the live feed online via laptop!

Thanks Everso

I would like to see her with a top drive, I think she could shake the order up a bit.

As a side note, it would be good if they made all the drivers for n endurance event qualify the car and then averaged the time achieved by all the drivers to determine the grid.

Thanks

lol at Todd Kelly's comment. Watched some highlights of the first round on youtube and my two immediate conclusions were that Whincup is still the best driver in the field, and that Morris is still the worst driver in the field.

Van Gisbergen certainly has raw pace, and is a flamboyant driver which I like. I just hope for the Stone Brothers sake he can improve his consistency this year. He could become one of the top Ford threats.

Thankfully Morris was only doing Abu Dhabi.

Whincup and Team Vodafone are still the best

Abu Dhabi or Bahrain? Bahrain was better in my opinion. And I am no real fan of the V8's these days.
