You’d expect this to have travelled quickly and confirmed by now.
I guess it was pure speculation
A indicator that was speculation is that Ryan Newman drives for Roush Fenway, not Penske (although his career did start with them).
It's also good to know the context of the tweet, the tweeter was asking a Roush employee if they knew anything and they did not just as a Penske employee came by and said he was awake.

I'm listening to the www.nascar.com/presspass stream atm, lots of people hanging around not saying anything at the moment.

Supposedly it's not been a good week for the Newman family

Yeah was a bad week, really hoping he was gonna win, which he was until it all went bad so quickly. Ryan Blaney, the guy who spun him, was driving the same car Ryan drove from 2002-2008. Infact 12 years ago today, Ryan Newman won Roger Penske’s first Daytona 500.

NASCAR just officially updated. He's alive but in serious, but a non-life-threatening condition. No further details given.

Non life threatening injuries, but note he didn't say not life changing.
That could tally in with the rumours I keep hearing about that he's been badly burnt.

At least he's alive which is good.

Thank goodness he is alive, I really hope he can race again, even if it’s just on dirt.

Badly burnt? There was a little fire, but not that much...

Yeah I don’t think it’s the fire, the drivers side roof collapsed and as mentioned before he’s a big guy.

Ryan Newman has publicly criticised NASCAR for years about cars getting airborne at Superspeedway’s, saying it was only a matter of time before someone got seriously injured. I guess he was right.

Denny Hamlin has issued a statement

I did not see any of the race but caught up with the events that transpired here and news sites.
A brutal and sickening crash, and just hoping at this stage that the stated serious injuries that Newman has do not turn out to be life changing. I am sure that a more detailed and specific statement regarding his injuries and prognosis will be forthcoming when the medics have had more time to investigate.
Regardless, wishing him a full and speedy recovery.
As has been said not a good week to be a Newman, given the Valentines Day confirmation of Ryan's separation from his wife.

Anyway, focusing away from the crash, did anyone see Kyle Busch flip off Joey Logano right at the moment Kyle's engine blew?

Also, this could of been really bad if that fuel can was full

The extraction video is on twitter/YouTube. Doesn't look like he's been burnt - overalls look fine, and he seems ok but with the standard fitment neck brace. Way he's removed (without a backboard) leaves me wondering what injuries he actually has.

Oh man that is a nasty wreck. I hope he turns out OK in the end. He's had a few nasty ones over the year, Ryan.

I presume it’s this one, it actually looks like at a stage he is grabbing onto a rescue worker. This video shows the violence of the hit LaJoie took too, thank goodness he got out straight away the fire on his car looked bad.

Newman was 'lucky' that he still carried loads of forward-momentum when he got hit.

I feel this could be a career-ending crash though - if not physically, at least for personal reasons.
