I asked the same question once. I guess it is because he 'carries' the legacy of his father.

That, and he seems pretty likeable, perhaps quite a bit more so then his father (although perhaps they've got different personalities).
And while he has never won a championship in Cup he has been pretty successful (though obviously not to the extent of his Dad, or say Jimmie Johnson), with 26 wins scored from the 2000 to 2015 seasons and 6 wins in the 2004 season alone.

When his daddy died all his dad's supporters switched their allegiance to him.
He is also a fairly likeable lad, raced him a few times in iRacing and he was always ever just one of the lads, more interested in talking about the game than anything else.
Women adore him too, I have to take heavy items away from the Mrs whenever his new wifey is on screen.

Jr is as despised as he is liked. He's a marmite character in NASCAR.

I see it, but he is not his dad.

Don't worry, he'll be gone after next week (until he turns up in NBC broadcasts) along with Matt Kenseth, and you'll be rid of Junior Nation.
It'll be replaced by Chase Nation no doubt.

Fitting I guess as Chase's dad Bill was the perennial most popular driver award winner before Jr came onto the scene. Even in Jr's first season, it was Bill who won that and in 2001 also he would have won but he asked his fans to vote for Dale Sr posthumously.

So, well, who is the favorite to win at Homestead, Miami? Truex Jr?

Yea, he's already the moral champion in my mind given the season he's had but well, Harvick beat him to win the most recent 1.5 mile track race (Texas) and I'd be okay with him or Keselowski as both Ford drivers. Just as long as it's not Kyle Busch..

I get the feeling Truex has the nod from tptb, the other three are meh, but Truex winning would make for a great rags to riches while battling personal adversity story, the TV is always trying to break him whenever he's got a microphone in front of him because of his Mrs/GF so no doubt NASCAR will latch onto that angle given the opportunity. He's essentially a true American hero, the other three are pricks.
I wouldn't mind seeing him win either.

Talking about moral champion, Truex Jr was my moral champion last year, he just had a bad race and lost everything at Talladega, it wasn't even his fault.

Seventeen years ago, they battled as rookies. Now they go out together as two of the sport's most stellar drivers.
