The Month of May 2022

Yeah OK its not May yet, but we need somewhere to put the Indy stuff coming up already in news.

Special McLaren SP liveries for Indy 500
Start of with some perdy looking SP McLaren liveries for the 500.... with a different look for each of the #5 #6 and #7 cars

Car #5 of Pato O’Ward, Car #6 of Juan Pablo Montoya, and Car #7 of Felix Rosenqvist, will all sport the olive green hues of sportswear brand Undefeated in some form or another.

The partnership with Arrow McLaren SP and Vuse will also see Undefeated designing the drivers’ racesuits and the squad’s garage for the ‘Greatest Spectacle in Racing’.

It comes after those parties came together last year in a tie-up which saw Rosenqvist’s car run in a ‘tiger camo’ livery.

This time around, Undefeated founder James Bond and his designers have opted for an asymmetric look for the McLaren SP fleet.

A couple more liveries launched today......

Tony Kanaan’s The American Legion livery

RoGro's "Delivered with Pride Livery. Like this one. RoGro will be one of I think two Indy (speedway) rookies. JJ the other.

A bit of excitement in Indy testing..... Power was one that had spins coming out of pitlane.

For Power, how the incident started was a mystery.
“Man, it just lit up,” recounted Will

“I didn’t have much lateral load. I was in second gear, full throttle, but we have a very tall second gear. I had already done a [installation] lap so I had rear tyre temp, I thought.

“Scared the absolute daylights out of me. You know the situation, when you come up on the track and there’s a whole pack coming at those speeds.

“I feel terrible for Colton that he crashed because I spun, but I had zero warning; zero.

“I told the engineer, ‘Look at the video; we’ve got to understand what happened there, because I don’t understand what happened.’ It’s just a bad situation.

“I want to know what I did wrong because I never want that to happen again.

“I don’t know if it’s something on the track because it felt like water. As soon as I finished spinning, I thought, ‘Man, there must be water there – something – because I’ve been out of that pit lane hundreds of times.”
Alexander Rossi had spun in the veteran session which kicked off proceedings, also with little consequences, before Helio Castroneves rotated in the all-in hit-out and made heavy contact with the wall as a result.

The Power-Herta incident caused IndyCar to call time on the day’s testing, around 30 minutes early, due to concerns over the track surface.

Dixon, McLaughlin set pace in incident-filled day of Indy 500 testing
Dixon wheeled the #9 Chip Ganassi Racing entry to an average speed of 227.187mph (365.622km/h) on his ninth lap in the third and final session of the day, the Honda driver edging out Chevrolet steerers Conor Daly (Ed Carpenter Racing), Callum Ilott (Juncos Hollinger Racing), and Santino Ferrucci (Dreyer & Reinbold Racing).

McLaughlin was only 17th-fastest in that session, albeit fastest of the Chevrolet-powered, Team Penske trio.

Furthermore, the New Zealander set the benchmark non-tow speed of 219.841mph (353.780km/h), just quicker than Simon Pagenaud’s 219.767mph (353.681km/h) in one of the Meyer Shank Racing Hondas.
The other MSR car, of Helio Castroneves, did not get through the day unscathed after the four-time race winner was one of three to spin exiting the pits.

Results: Test Session 2
Note: Third session of day designated officially as ‘Test Session 2’, after Test Session 1 and ROP Test Session 1

IndyCar conducts overnight track work to prevent further Indy pitlane spins

IndyCar and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway hope they have solved the issues that caused three Indy 500 winners to spin on leaving the pitlane in Wednesday’s test....

As we have seen in the vids there were a few instances of actual problems, and he test session was terminated early after consultation between IndyCar officials, and all drivers involved in the incidents plus. In addition Tony Kanaan and Marco Andretti remarked on how slippery they had found the pit exit and warm-up lane all day.

One theory put the blame on sealant applied to the track, pitlane and warm-up lanes last autumn, which makes the surface more water resistant.....

The banking on the turns allow excess sealant to gradually drain from any areas where IndyCars experience lateral load at high speed, but it seems the flatness of the warm-up lane and what used to be the apron may have caused excess sealant build-up.

Never fear, a fix / band aid job is happening......

An IndyCar spokesperson said
“There was extensive tyre-dragging and brushing last night, using two 800-pound tractor tyres to put rubber down and remove any extra RPE treatment. The process went on until just past midnight last night.

“The plan this morning is to dry the track, and then Firestone will re-scan and evaluate the affected areas. We anticipate improvement based on the findings last night.”

However damp and misting conditions on Thursday have since slowed attempts to analyse whether the overnight surface alterations have worked, and has naturally delayed the start of track action.

So, to recap: 33 entries, not 34. Not JHR+RHR. But probably AJFR+Cusick+DragonSpeed. But if that falls through, it’s probably JHR+Cusick+DragonSpeed. Probably.

I don't really like too many bright colored liveries. To put this powder blue with orange is just terrible. Even worse on a white car (#6 is the worst). I don't like predominantly white cars in general, gives me some minor ladder series unsponsored vibe.

Radical qualifying revamp for Indianapolis 500

IndyCar has announced major changes to the qualifying format for the Indianapolis 500, which borrows heavily from the road course/street circuit system.

The Fast Nine has been scrapped, with drivers to now graduate to a top 12 and then a Fast Six, just as is the case on the roads and streets.

However, Top 12 Qualifying and the Fast Six will be run in a shootout-style, on Sunday, May 22.

Drivers will still have to complete a four-lap run, as is tradition at the Brickyard, and will do so one-by-one, with the order set from slowest to fastest.

As yet, only 32 entries have been announced for the Indy 500, with the quest to get to the magic number of 33 apparently ongoing.

However, provision has been made for ‘Last Chance Practice’ and ‘Last Chance Qualifying’ to set the 11th and final row of the starting grid, in the unlikely prospect that 34 or more cars are entered in the event.

If that is the case, then the Day One Qualifying session will only lock in positions 13 to 30, with the top 12 and also bottom three finalised on Day Two, that being the Sunday prior to race day.

Under the previous system, which took effect in 2019, the field vied for a berth in the Fast Nine on Day One, with the first three rows and bumping (when necessary) sorted out on Day Two.

“We have an incredibly deep field heading into this year’s Indianapolis 500,” said IndyCar president Jay Frye.

“The timing is right to implement a new and dramatic way to expand one of the most intense weekends on our calendar.

“Winning pole position for the ‘500’ is an incredible feat, and with this new format, it will be even more challenging.”

The top 12 qualifiers will all earn series points, with 12 for the pole-sitter, 11 for the second-fastest driver, and so on.

Furthermore, pole position will be worth USD 100,000 (AUD 140,170, at an exchange rate of 0.7134 AUD/USD).

Each driver is guaranteed an attempt to post a qualifying run in the Top 12 and Fast Six, as well as in Last Chance Qualifying.

In the latter, drivers may opt to make multiple attempts until time expires, with those doing so having their previous time withdrawn.

Practice for the Indianapolis 500 starts on Tuesday, May 17, with the race itself taking place on May 29 (both dates local time).
