Round 12/13 - IMS road course Mk2 (and 3)

#1

Post by MonteCristo »

Two more rounds of Indycar coming up on the 2nd and 3rd of October on the Indy road course, of course.

Some early news:

https://racer.com/2020/09/24/askew-side ... s-call-up/
Helio Castroneves will replace Oliver Askew in the No.7 Arrow McLaren SP IndyCar at next weekend’s Harvest GP on the IMS road course after Askew was declared not fit to drive by IndyCar’s medical team.

https://racer.com/2020/09/22/karam-rejo ... arvest-gp/
Dreyer & Reinbold Racing has announced it will field its No. 24 DRR Chevrolet for driver Sage Karam for the Oct. 2-3 IndyCar Harvest GP doubleheader weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with new partner, Oil2Soil, an environmentally friendly absorbent for oil and lubricant clean-up.

Zach Veach is also out, as discussed here. A replacement is TBC. Likely Hinch?

Askew has been experiencing concussion like symptoms since his Indy 500 wreck.

The fact that he has been allowed to race since then is a disgrace. Isn't there a functioning medical protocol in the sport?

Depends on whether he told anyone or not. Maybe it's like a footballer who plays on with an injury and plays it down the medical staff.

Maybe somebody in the team advised him to keep driving, but I can't imagine the series saying "Go for it, sport!"

I would assume that a racing series that prides itself on it's safety team has a working concussion protocol. That includes (or should include) cognitive tests and more, but yes, without knowing full well what the tests are and how they go about it, it's entirely possible that Askew managed to cheese it.

Which makes it even more alarming as a second impact could have had fatal consequences.

They've probably paid for the entire 2021 season and now they might have a chance to see their car anywhere but in 19th position.
