The show matters. Be it IndyCar, F1, MLB or whatever. If the cash flow stops, so does the league.
I don't see how this comes off as strange. Also if I had to choose between red-flagging the race and going into "Overtime" I'd choose the first. Even though I'd rather see races finish under yellow as they did now. It's 500 miles, not 502.5.
But we're dinosaurs in a changing world (I say, 35 years old).

I guess the idea of a 500 mile race being decided by a 5 mile restart and sprint just doesnt fit with my ideals. I would rather see it finish the way it did, which in my mind was a reflection of the race as it was when Pigot had his prang, than as has been mentioned, the thought of a restart taking out the leading three and a complete outsider in race terms prior to the yellow comes through to take unjustified honours.

Having had a few days to reflect, I totally agree with the decision to stop the race.
At the time I felt as though I had invested 3 hours to watch a battle go down to the wire, and i'd had the rug pulled from under my feet with just minutes to go.
Equally however, Sato had invested 3 hours into putting himself into the best position to win the Indy 500, and at the point the red flag came out, he had been successful, and had it been stopped then he may have been tumbled at the restart.
Right call.

Yeah, it was the right call even though IndyCars has flirted with red fag to avoid yellow finish before. I think if the crash happened with 15 laps to go they would have thrown the red and tried to repair the pitwall. But with 5 to go it would have looked gimmicky enough to influence the finish of the race so they've let it go.

I don't think Sato would have been caught if the race stayed green. Dixon wouldn't have caught him. Rahal might have got Dixon, but would have run out of time to get Sato.
