2021 banter & Silly season thread for MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3

I thought with the season over for 2020 might as well get a 2021 thread started..... what better way to start the thread than with news confirming Marquez new surgery and prognosis.

Marquez has third surgery.... will miss season start.

Marc Marquez has already undergone a third operation and bone grafts on his right arm in Madrid and likely faces a six-month recovery period. The surgery involved bone being taken from his hip, which is high in red blood cells, and grafted onto the humerus area on his right arm where a new plate was also inserted.
The full statement from Honda read: "Marc Marquez has undergone a new operation on his right arm as a result of the slow healing of the humerus bone, which has not improved with specific shock wave treatment.

"Today the rider has undergone surgery at the Hospital Ruber Internacional, in Madrid, for a pseudarthrosis of the right humerus.

"The surgery, carried out by a team made up of doctors Samuel Antuna, Ignacio Roger de Ona, Juan de Miguel, Aitor Ibarzabal and Andrea Garcia Villanueva, consisted of the removal of the previous plate and the placement of a new plate with the addition of an iliac crest bone graft with a corticoperiosteal free flap.

"The surgical procedure lasted for eight hours and was uneventful."
.
Now the next question is what will the team do about the contractually need to field two bikes and who will ride the second one. Dovi is the tip to make a return to the team, with whom he raced from 2009 to the end of 2011 - scoring his first MotoGP victory . He moved to the factory team from JiR Honda, whom he made his MotoGP debut with.
Should Marquez be unable to race for part of 2021, this leaves the door open for Andrea Dovizioso to make a surprise return to MotoGP action.

Dovizioso opted to take a sabbatical after quitting Ducati at the end of the 2020 season, with no test rider roles offered to him for 2021, which gave him a clear path back onto the MotoGP grid for 2022.

Free of any ties to teams in MotoGP, Honda could reasonably call on Dovizioso to fill in for Marquez should the Spaniard have to miss moreHe now likely faces a six-month recovery period, which would almost certainly rule him out for the start of the 2021 season, due to begin on 28 March in Qatar.

I read he was in hospital with Covid but did not realise the severity of his case. Wishes to Fausto for a speedy and full recovery.

Update on Gresini

Gresini is still classed as stable but clearly still very unwell.

He remains on a ventilator after becoming infected with COVID-19 late last year.

The Gresini Racing owner has been in specialist care for a case of the coronavirus since December 30, after first entering hospital three days prior.

The latest update from his team, again by way of comment from Alberto Pizzardi Hospital’s Dr Nicola Cilloni, advises that the two-time 125cc world champion is “quite conscious”.

However, his pneumonia persists.

Doc's report
“Fausto Gresini’s general health conditions are still characterized by severe respiratory insufficiency,” said Dr Cilloni.

“Tests performed revealed that interstitial pneumonia is still present and requires mechanical ventilation and moderate sedation to be maintained.

“This allows to keep the amount of oxygen in the blood sufficient.”
Fingers crossed for him. :fingers:

Why would Honda want Dovi as a Marquez stand in when they have Bradl?

With it now pretty much inevitable that the still recovering Marquez will miss at least the early races in the season, many (me included) thought it would be a good spot for Dovi to fill in whilst on sabbatical, and opportunity he has said would interest....

But now it seems that might not be in Honda's thoughts with Marc's crew chief Santi Hernandez says Stefan Bradl "would make much more sense" to stand-in for Marc.

Hernandez - who acted as Bradl's crew chief - wouldn't see this as a "normal" move for Honda and thinks the "great job" Bradl did in 2020 warrants him being the first in line to replace Marquez again.
"I would not see it normal for Honda to sign Dovizioso to replace Marc," Hernandez said.

"If during the year you have considered the option and incorporate him [Bradl] as a test rider and in the end you have ruled him out - because, among other things, Stefan has done a great job - well, I wouldn't understand that you signed that rider for three races.

"It would make much more sense for that substitute to be Bradl, because he is the one who has the best sensations with the bike.

"He is the one who has understood things that happen in races and that are only understood in a grand prix.

"Because he has the speed and because he is the tester who is testing things to improve the bike, who better than him to replace Marc?"
He has a point of course, it is just Im not sure that a great stand in is one who had but two top ten finishes. I guess difficult bike made for Marc is some sort of excuse, but ...... having said that I just realised the Bradl link may be one of continuity, given that Alex M is out of the team this year and Pol Espargaro in his place,

I guess two complete new guys (to the team) pushing development is somewhat risky, especially given the likleyhood Marc will return at some stage and not want to be stepping into a new, different bike, developed by Pol and Dovi perhaps more to suit their styles. Something led by Bradl is more likely to Marc's style.

Anyway it is by no mans a lay-down misère that Dovi will get the replacement for Marc gig.

Gresini is still classed as stable but clearly still very unwell.

He remains on a ventilator after becoming infected with COVID-19 late last year.

Latest update today on Gresini.... still in intensive care and back under sedation.

Gresini MotoGP boss Fausto Gresini remains in intensive care with COVID-19 as his condition remains "serious" due to his lungs being "hit hard" by the virus.

The double 125cc world champion and veteran MotoGP team boss took ill just before Christmas and was hospitalised on 27 December in Imola.

Due to his worsening condition he was transferred to a specialist COVID care unit in Bologna just before the new year, where has remained since.

Gresini was placed into a medically induced coma, but was brought out of this in early January.

Having remained under sedation and on a ventilator to aid breathing, doctors began to bring him out of this two weeks ago and he was able to talk to family members.

However, in the last week he has had to be put back into sedation to aid breathing while on a ventilator - with the latest update from the Gresini team also confirming there is an infection in his lungs.

A statement from the team read:
"Fausto Gresini's conditions remain serious, as the former motorcycle world champion is still in the intensive care unit of the Maggiore Carlo Alberto Pizzardi hospital in Bologna.

"Here is today's statement by Dr Nicola Cilloni: "Fausto's general conditions are unfortunately still serious.

"The lungs hit hard by the disease and by an overlapping infection are able to give oxygen to the blood only and aided by the mechanical ventilation machine.

"It is still necessary to keep Fausto asleep almost always to allow the mechanical fan to work properly.

"When he is periodically awakened, he is conscious and combative."

Pre-season testing changes made due to Covid

With much of the world currently wrestling with a second wave of COVID-19 after several new, more infectious variants have emerged MotoGP testing has had some changes..

An acceleration in infections in Malaysia forced the country to declare a state of emergency last week, which resulted in MotoGP having to cancel its scheduled first pre-season test at Sepang in February.

Currently, the Qatar test is still scheduled to go ahead in March, with two extra days added to make up for the loss of the Sepang outing.

At last signs of improvement for Gresini....

Fausto Gresini remains in a "fragile" condition, but doctors says his recent progress has offered a "more optimistic" prognosis.

On Monday, the Gresini team has issued a brief update stating the Italian is still on a ventilator but his blood oxygen levels are steadily progressing, but will still require treatment for some time.
"Minor but comforting news on the state of health of Fausto Gresini, who has been hospitalised for over three weeks at the Maggiore Carlo Alberto Pizzardi hospital in Bologna,"
"Doctor Nicola Cilloni [said]: "Fausto Gresini's general clinical conditions are fragile, but slowly and progressively improving.

"He is conscious and combative. Radiological and laboratory tests also go in the same direction.

"He still needs to be supported by the mechanical ventilator, but blood oxygenation is progressively improving.

"He started physiotherapy to rehabilitate both breathing and muscles.

"He remains in critical and fragile condition with a long path of treatment, but the direction taken in recent days makes the prognosis, still reserved, more optimistic."

MotoGP to kick off 2021 season with back-to-back Qatar races

We got used to changes in the calendar last season, and with F1 making changes to their calendar in the early prt of their 2021 season it is of no surprise that Moto GP is having to make changes. As the thread headline suggests MotoGP with kick off 2021 with back-to-back races in Qatar followed by the Portuguese Grand Prix in April.

There was discussion the season might start on a different date due to the clash with F1 in Bahrain, but it was decided the season will still get underway as planned on 28 March with the Qatar GP, followed by the Doha GP at the same Losail International Circuit on 4 April.

The Portuguese GP will then follow on 18 April, before the currently scheduled run of races that was originally meant to begin the European season on 2 May with the Spanish GP at Jerez gets under way.

Due to COVID the US and Argentine GPs have been postponed from their April slots to the last quarter of the year - but currently have no new provisional dates.

No other date changes have been announced at this time, though the vacant TBC slot in August vacated by the axed Czech GP no longer appears on the calendar and Russia's Igora Drive is no longer listed as a reserve circuit.

Im sure there will be further modifications in due course but that is it for the time being.

I lost a bit of interest in MotoGP. Bought the '20 game for PS4, which I hope will bring back a degree of liking.

I loved this 2006 bike:

Sensational new claim over Marquez arm injury

It seems Marc might have been telling a few porkies as to how he 'really' re-injured his arm and broke the plate he had inserted after his early comeback attempt. The syry Marc gave was he re-injured it at home opening a window. Now Honda is opening an investigation into suggestions he damaged it pissing around on a trail bike at home.

It sort of reminds me of back in the mid noughties when Montoya allegedly had a tennis injury that led to him missing a couple of races was later suggested to have been falling of a Harley and nothing to do with tennis. I think soon after that the limited future of Montoya at McLaren became apparent.
Honda is investigating whether or not Marc Marquez actually broke the plate in his already injured arm while riding a bike, according to a prominent MotoGP rider manager.

Marquez has now had three operations on his broken right humerus (upper arm) after a shocking crash in the first race of the 2020 season, and is likely to miss at least the start of the upcoming campaign.

The second of those procedures occurred just 13 days after the first, and was necessary due to damage to the titanium plate which was originally inserted.

While Marquez rode at the second Jerez event during that 13-day span, an endeavour he called off after qualifying, Repsol Honda Team Manager Alberto Puig said the plate had been broken while “trying to open a window” (or door, as he later corrected himself), at home.

Almost six months on from the second operation and Puig’s subsequent explanation, doubts have now been raised about that version of events.

Carlo Pernat, in the most recent of his regular commentary segments with Italian outlet GPOne.com, claims that there is suspicion about the truthfulness of the world champion’s claims.

“Honda is investigating Marquez’s credibility, not the decision of the doctors,” he stated.

“Let me explain. They’re investigating the truth of that door episode, because the problem might not have stemmed from there.

“I think Marc got on a bike and Honda didn’t know it.”

Honda and the medical staff involved have come in for criticism for their management of the matter as Marquez’s time on the sidelines continues.

At the time of the window/door revelation, however, Puig claimed that Marquez would not have been allowed to ride his RC213V again at Jerez if the plate break was a known possibility.

“It was a domestic accident this time because he was trying to open a window and he suddenly felt a lot of pain and later we could see that the plate was broken,” said Puig, himself a former rider.

“This is caused after all the stress that he had in the arm, but as you know we went to Jerez with conviction that we could do it.

“The doctors were OK [for him] to do it and they never informed us that the plate could have broken.

“If we had this info, probably he wouldn’t have gone to Jerez, Honda will not have given him the chance to ride.”

Marquez has been a regular on the operating table in recent years, including for surgery to address the regular dislocations of his left shoulder during the 2018/19 off-season.

In a pre-season testing preview released by Honda Racing Corporation itself during that recovery phase, it was said that Marquez’s physiotherapist had ordered his bikes be dismantled to prevent him from attempting to ride before the shoulder had sufficiently healed.

Of late, Honda has been far from forthcoming with updates on its superstar, although it did report his progress to be “satisfactory” upon a six-week check-up for the third arm operation.

That procedure was undertaken due to the discovery of pseudarthrosis (also known as a ‘non-union’ or ‘false joint’), and took place after Marquez had missed the balance of the season following his unsuccessful return at the second Jerez round.

Adding to the stakes is that the 27-year-old is now embarking on four-year contract, as announced in February 2020.

Pernat, who is known for his outspoken commentary, currently manages 2020 Moto2 champion and new Esponsorama Racing rider Enea Bastianini.
https://www.speedcafe.com/2021/02/01/se ... rm-injury/

At the end of the day it is a bit irrelevant as to how he compounded the injury. It is not likely to speed up his recovery knowing.
Of course something like this is more likely to interfere with the trust of Honda of Marc in future things than his actual comeback. But is this sort of issue just one of those things that happens with elite sportsman of all sports.
