Back to Phillip Island for the season opener and the first bigger surprise already in Johnny Rea having crashed out of race 1 early.
Sykes (BMW) leads from Redding (Ducati) and van der Mark (Yamaha) in a 6 way battle at halfpoint

Amazing race, good to see Toprak finally being at the top with a factory bike in a factory team. He's the real threat to Rea's title this year

Rea made a right mess of the race, off on the first lap or so and rejoining dead last and then doing the job properly at high speed, lucky not to hurt himself. The last couple of laps were a free for all. Great to watch although feel a bit sorry for VdM, leading until the last lap and finishing 4th albeit in a blanket finish.

I`m not quite sure there since Lowes' tires still had quite some life in them when they crossed finish line and therefore I wonder where a not so ambitious Johnny Rea would have finished. To me, the Kwakas are still the bikes to beat at the moment. The Yamahas as well as the Ducati suffered towards the end.

In regards to van der Mark that's how it can go in a tight finish. Actually, have a look at Tom Sykes who lead almost the entire first half of the race before he was passed back to his team mate Laverty, who came from 15th or 16th.

Oh and best of luck to this lad and his team on their new adventure in WSS.
Dannys last time here was 8 years ago and his team never has been. On a new R6, as well.

Yeah, but Lowes usually crashes too much. You can't beat Rea if you crash a lot, this race was an extraordinary event. I mean, the last retire for Rea was at Brno in 2018. Sykes notoriously has problems with his tires, it's one of his charateristics, never thought for a second that he could have won today. I agree though that Kawasaki is still the best bike, but Yamaha improved a lot since last year. Meanwhile Ducati i think will struggle after this race, the top speed advantage it had last year seems to be almost gone this year.
Will see what will happen tonight, SP Race and Race-2 will be a totally different story.

Lowes beat Rea in Race 3. Toprak had a mechanical failure with two laps left.

Mandatory pitstops in SuperSport? Who ever thought that's a good idea?

SBK: What I expected to happen once both lads remain seated.
SSP: I'm not happy that Pirelli obviously didn't build a lasting tire once more. And if you have to do pitstops, please don't make them timed and leave it to the teams.

Good close racing again and a really tight finish. At one stage the leading 9 or 10 bikes were lapping in a huddle for a while. I enjoyed it. Glad to see Lowes show Rea he can and will mix it with him and he took the lead with a real brave pass at T1.

This was a good race actually! Too bad for Chaz he didn't make it though!
Not as much as a crash fest either, unlike MotoGP the last week. Oh roll on tomorrow. I bet the ssp race gets exciting.

Is anyone watching MotoAmerica from Road Atlanta tonight?
