Quartararo's title-ready form must have really convinced Vinales he's destined for #2 at Yamaha for the next decade. His weaknesses are well known, he struggles on cold tires and cooler temperatures in general. Since Yamaha is down one rider I wonder if they actually try to scoop Raul Fernandez for the SRT team now? Polish commentators said during the Assen round there is still some chatter backstage and Fernandez isn't locked up to ride for Tech 3 if KTM actually accepts Yamaha's money.

2022 Silly Season Rumours..... including Rea to Yamaha SRT.

The satellite Yamaha squad looks set to have potentially two vacancies for 2022 as Franco Morbidelli appears the most likely replacement for the departing Maverick Vinales.

With Valentino Rossi almost certain to move on from SRT - whether into retirement or to race for his own VR46 team in 2022 - SRT’s line-up next year may need to be completely overhauled.

Several names from WSBK were previously linked, with Yamaha duo Toprak Razgatlioglu and Garrett Gerloff names frequently bandied about in conversation about SRT.

But both have signed on with Yamaha in WSBK for 2022, ruling them out - though Gerloff is said to have a clause in his deal permitting him to break contract should he be offered a MotoGP seat.

During last weekend’s Dutch round of the 2021 WSBK season, six-time WSBK champion and twice a MotoGP starter Rea didn’t rule out the possibility of signing with SRT when he was asked about his links to the squad.

Now confirmed as being for the next 3 races.... Morbidelli's recovery is obviously not going as well as hoped.

A great career and after the year he has had this year I dont think any of us are surprised to see him hang up his helmet.
Great career and a fantastic Ambassador to the sport.

It is probably a good time for him to hang up the helmet.

Im sure Vale wont be a stranger and we will still see plenty of his smiling face in the MotoGP paddock next year, given the birth of VR46 as a MotoGP team, and wish them all the very best.

Rossi considered riding for his own VR46 Team in 2022.

Valentino Rossi has now confirmed he “thought deeply” about racing with his own VR46 MotoGP team in 2022 but felt the “risk” was too great for just one season, which helped his retirement decision.
Over the summer break the possibility for Rossi to race with his own VR46 team on a Ducati in 2022 emerged after it transpired that the Aramco title sponsorship of the outfit did not exist – and therefore Rossi would need to pilot one of the Desmosedicis in order to secure backing for the team.

While uncertainty still surrounds the Aramco/VR46 deal, Rossi ultimately decided to call time on his racing career.

He feels the VR46 Ducati project is a good option, but believes he needs a couple of seasons at least to adapt to the Ducati – having famously struggled in 2011-2012 with the Italian marque – and felt “there is more risk” in the move if it was just for one season.

“I have an offer also from my team for next year,” Rossi said.

“An official offer! I think deeply to continue because I would have liked to have raced for my team an

“So, it would have been fascinating to race with my team but at the end I decided not to for some different reasons; I would have had to change bike, I think that it was a good project if you have two or three years but if you have just one season maybe there is more risk than the good things.

“So that is why I decided not to.”

Rossi admits he is “not happy” to be retiring from MotoGP given his passion for motorcycle racing, but feels he was ready for the decision now.

“Two years ago and also last year I was not ready to stop with MotoGP because I had to understand and try everything, but now I am OK, I am quiet,” he added.

“I am not happy for sure but if I make another year, next year, I would not be happy in the same moment because I want to race for another 20 years!

“I think this is the right moment.

“We have another half of a season where I will try to be stronger than in the first half and I will try to give my best but I think it is the right choice.”

Just to show the length of Rossi's career, a comment from Quartararo rubs it in....

“Rossi was already a two-time world champion before I was born and to think that he won't be with us next year is sad.

“Valentino is the rider who made me want to come to MotoGP, I waited hours and hours at the tracks to get his autograph when I was a kid, he is still my idol now and he is still a legend.”

There have been some great tributes from other MotoGP riders following his announcement.

I see Dani Pedrosa is running as a wildcard this weekend for KTM (who he now tests for). I think it will be his first non Honda
premier class race ride (actually I think he was on a Honda in 125 and 250 as well).

I dont have high expectations tbh, but good luck to him and hope he doesnt damage his historically frail body on what is presumably a one-off.

Crikey I didnt see that coming.... Dani was fastest KTM is the first session in 10th place, a second off the lead (Naka) and nearly 0.5 faster than KTM's next fastest, Oliveira, who had a strange low speed high-side.

KTM Tech3 confirms Moto2 rookie Raul Fernandez for the 2022 MotoGP season

The 20-year-old has made an immediate impact in Moto2 aboard the Ajo KTM-run Kalex chassis, winning three races as he battles for the title with team-mate Remy Gardner – the pair split by 31 points after the first nine races.

Fernandez will join Gardner at Tech3 next year, whose promotion to MotoGP was confirmed in June, while KTM’s factory team line-up will continue to be Brad Binder – who will remain until the end of 2024 – and Miguel Oliveira.

Marquez admits arm condition worse than expected at Styria MotoGP

MM93 has been saying of late his training has regained full status to aid his recovery from last years injuries and subsequent operations. As such he was expected to by now be more comfortable on the back.

Not happening..... Ending Friday sixth overall on the combined times at the Red Bull Ring, and finishing FP3 in seventh place, Marquez admits he thought his physical condition was going to be better than it was.
"The summer break and the weeks I've been able to train have been good for me physically and mentally,” Marquez said.

"But I honestly thought the step in improvement would be bigger.

"Already when I went out for FP1 I felt some discomfort and I realise that I have to be on a MotoGP bike to improve my injury.

“The best has not been as expected and that has been a blow for me, because I didn't expect it, but we have to keep riding and be patient.

“We have to keep working to understand what is going on.

“In FP1 I felt very bad at the first start and then I got better and better, and I would like to think that this is a positive point.”
