Not the Niedermayr, nor the later Swaelens. But it was my first thought, as well. Looks very similar.

I would say there is a big chance that this is a fatal accident, and the solution to this one is in mm.org.

Grenzlandring held races from 1948 to 1952 and only in 1948 races cars had numbers with two digits; other races had cars with three digit numbers.

I doubt that accident happened there.

I initally believed that it is Villoresi's accident at III Grand Prix des Nations in Geneve in 1950 when three spectators were killed as it matched vehicle number, but MM states that driver was thrown out from car and this did not match the photo:

Can we find out what car this is?

Were for example mudguards like these used regularly?

Mudguards like that (cycle guards?) were I know added to some cars to allow them to be classified as Sports cars... usually on open wheeler cars with a wide cockpit which in some instances might be opened up more to allow a dummy second seat or space for one, I think one of the earlier criteria for such mods.
I think a good example of such a change would be at Le Mans in this period. where Louis Rosier, who had won the 1949 Belgian GP in his single-seater Lago-Talbot T26 (privately) entered and won the 1950 Le Mans in a T26 Talbot Lago converted in this way to meet Sportscar regs. (Of note he shared the car with his son, who drove for 15 minutes of the 24 hours! Rosier snr. also set the first ever 100mph lap at Le Mans in the car)

This is the Rosier modified Le Mans winning Talbot Lago I referred to.

Below is a Talbot Lago 26C in GP trim

Before anyone tells me those are not the same exact car, of that I am aware. What I do know is that the exact car (Chassis #110055) that won the Le Mans 24 hr race in June also ran back in GP spec for Ecurie Rosier at Pescara in August(Louveau) and Pedralbes in October (Mairesse).

That's not a Talbot. It's a German "Eigenbau" from the post WW2 years 1946-1953. These types were called Inter, as you could use them as a Sports Car and as a Monoposto/F2. But at the moment I can't tell you which car.

Reversed image search brought this.

Very good. Vehicle number appears to be wrong. I've submitted the correction.

I cannot edit the title, as I no longer moderate this subforum. Thanks in advance.
