„The articles culminated in "Project Volvo at Sebring" in 1964, wherein the Christy white car, Riley's *14* and Art Tattersall's red coupes -- numbered 50, 51 and 49, respectively -- were entered by Volvo and were considered as a factory team, although really three quite independent efforts. Through mix-ups in rules interpretation, the FIA-affiliated Automobile Racing Club of Florida, the ARCF, as sanctioning body forced the three cars to run in the Prototype Category, where their fitted headers (and Weber carburetors, and a host of other goodies they did not bring) would be legal -- but the "team" would be no match for the factory Porsche 904s. This was moot, for Tattersall rolled under the MG bridge in the esses breaking his back, never again to race; Christy and Dave Jordan retired due to the camshaft boring a hole in the front cover due to hasty preparation, and Riley's car, after many lost laps due to a thrown fan blade and a broken spindle, crossed the line in the hands of Nick Coné in a shower of sparks, 4th in class but well down -- the second spindle having gone on the last lap.”

“Meanwhile Colin Chapman had arrived at Sebring with his new creation, the Eleven. The car had been brought from New York by Briggs Cunningham for Chapman and Len Bastrup to drive in its world race debut. Eleven #156 had the first 1500cc Climax FWB under the bonnet, an MG-A transmission, limited-slip differential and long range fuel tanks. It was built to win the race. Just two years earlier a 1,500cc OSCA had won, and this time Chapman knew his car was faster. But it all ended when Bastrup took the car out for practice on Friday. It looked particularly quick, as Sheppard recalls, going down the pit straight, and on through the two sweeping left hand bends after that. The next turn, a much tighter left, that led onto a short straight where the MG bridge would be built a year later, was where Bastrup came in too hot, dropping a wheel over the edge and plowing out into the hay bales. The Eleven caught the sand and flipped over, trapping Bastrup inside. Onlookers righted the car, but as Bastrup sat up dazed in the cockpit, flames erupted from under the bonnet. The debut Eleven then went up in smoke. Chapman was devastated by that crash. It upset him to no end. Although the car was rebuilt later, at Cunningham's shop in New York, it was through as the Team Lotus entry at Sebring. On race day, spectacular stop-action photographs of the Eleven demolishing itself were featured in newspapers across the country -- including the front page of the New York Times. In many papers, the little English Lotus got more attention than the race itself. Of course Chapman took little consolation from the publicity. He needed a ride.”

In 1962 at Sebring she co-drove a 1-liter NART OSCA with boyfriend Allen Eager. He spun out after just getting the car handed to him by Denise and was T-boned by Ken Miles in a Sunbeam Alpine. Apart from substantial body damage, the incident caused the car's throttle to stick wide open and Eager abandoned it on the course and walked back to the pits. Denise was disgusted that he left the car so she jogged/walked to where it was and pushed the OSCA back to the pits, where the NART mechanics deemed it beyond repair.

“As Paul Rainville tells it, his father Charlie brought in the Bizzarrini Iso Grifo he was driving for a scheduled pit stop and driver change. The rain was still pounding down when co-driver Mike Gammino got into the car. He didn’t bother to fasten his safety belt before reentering the race.

Two or three laps later the car hydroplaned on the start/finish straight and struck the Mercedes-Benz Bridge abutment broadside cutting the car in two.

When the corner workers arrived to render assistance they found Gammino in his seat in the front half of the car. His hands were still on the steering wheel. The driver’s seat was still firmly affixed to the floor. His firmly affixed seat belts were with the back half of the car which was now twenty-plus feet distant. It was a lucky day for Mike Gammino.

When the corner workers initially assisted Gammino from the car it was still raining heavily and he really didn’t take note of the condition of the car. After determining that he didn’t suffer any serious injuries he was allowed to walk back to the pits. When he got there Charlie Rainville asked, “how bad’s the car?” He replied, “don’t know.” Charlie said, “Well, let’s go see.”

When they arrived at the accident scene Gammino took one look at the car cut in two with the pieces over twenty feet apart and promptly fainted.”

Description:During the race Bob McLean went off the with his Comstock-GT40. He hit a telephone and somersaulted. McLean just came from an pitstop with full tanks. Those split and burst into flames. McLean was trapped in the car and perished. Near the crash scene was a fire truck but they only had water, which didn't help for the burning magnesium wheels. Also they only had two 10-pound dry chemical extinguishers which were quickly used up. The car had just made a pit stop right before the accident and was fully loaded with gas. The heat was so intense that the magnesium wheels ignited and burst into white hot sparks. The fire drew a ghoulish crowd of 2000 and police had trouble controlling the mob and the police roughed up some people including a television cameraman.
Later in the race 4 spectators were killed.
The wrecked GT40 is possibly buried near the circuit as the ghost of Sebring.

Jack Slottag
Jack Slottag is the unlucky driver in the pic. During training he was wearing tennis shoes but they were getting too hot and slippery. So he switched to Gucci loafers. However they had a rather unusual high heel. Around the 5th hour it happened into the hairpin when Jack inadvertently hit both brake and accelerator.

1998

Wayne Taylor in the 1998 Sebring Fall Classic:
" [...] Rich was fifth or sixth in line behind Wayne Taylor in his Ferrari 333 SP and a pack of GT3 BMWs. Taylor went to the right side of the front straight to pass the BMWs and found trouble. The first I saw was a Ferrari hugging the inside of the front straight wall starting to go side ways. Taylor hit the water on the right side, over corrected, and his car went across the track to the opposite side. Rich, coming out of the spray and on the left side of the track staying out of everyone’s way, found a Ferrari parked rear first into the wall and in his way. Afterwards Rich joked saying, “When I saw Taylor’s car in front of me all I could think of was, ‘well, I’ve never hit a Ferrari before’!”. Rich slid right just narrowly missing the front of Taylor’s car. He didn’t even loose the auxiliary airfoils that stick out at the front of the car. I thought for sure those bits were goners! The track immediately went yellow. Taylor was out on the spot. [...] "

Hey @hollie3sa, are these the same? Not sure if the two entries should be merged or not.

In a way they are, in a way they're not. I wasn't sure about this one.

The fire was not part of the initial damage as seen in the last photo of the first entry. So I counted it as a separate incident. But since it likely was a consequence of the actual accident, these can be merged into one.

Ahhh, I see. So, the last photo in the first entry was pre-fire?
