Österreichring accidents

#1

Post by Jacob »

The good old Österreichring was very fast and also a bit dangerous.
But in the Database is only one accident there.
http://www.the-fastlane.co.uk/cpdb/cras ... ditid1=326

I will look in the archivs of motorsportarchiv.at and Technisches Museum Wien.

Maybe you can add more from other sources.

Rain led to many accidents during the 1978 Grand Prix:

Image

Description: Caught napping by Reutemann in the opening manoeuvres Andretti tried to go round the outside of the Ferrari and spun off into the barriers! ...
The track was a lot more slippery than most people realised and on the fourth lap Scheckter slid off and crashed into Andretti's abandoned Lotus, doing neither of the cars any good. This left Depailler in second place followed by Watson, Jabouille, Hunt and Laffite, for Reutemann had had a "moment" and dropped back down the field. On the far side of the circuit a heavy rainstorm was approaching and conditions on "slick" tyres were impossible as rain swept across the valley. Even before the rain at the start finish area great rooster-tails of spray could be seen billowing out behind the cars as they descended the hillside from the top straight. At the end of lap 6 Villeneuve headed for the pits for rain tyres, having executed a monumental spin, and next lap Jabouille lost control of the Renault, managed to gather it all up and also stopped for rain tyres, while Fittipaldi was into the pits and Pironi spun off and knocked the nose cone off his Tyrrell. Peterson finished lap 7 in full control of the situation and when the last car had gone through the officials decided to stop the race and the red and black flags were held out, meaning "Race to stop and restart at a later time." After the decision had been made Peterson spun off onto the grass and got stuck, so it was Depailler who arrived first at the red and black flags, and as the rain poured down the Austrian GP came to a grinding halt.
From Motorsportsmagazine.

For the second part Mario Andretti, Jody Scheckter, Hector Rebaque & Nelson Piquet did not restart. Rebaque had clutch problems, while the others had crashed.

Thanks for all this, Jacob. I'm shocked at the images of Ronnie's Lola coupe incident. He seems rather unsettled as well.

Doing a great job, @Jacob! Do you want to enter some of these into the database yourself?

Just a note: Since it's a photos database, we won't enter anything that doesn't have a photo attached (video screenshots don't count).

Hi Paul, thanks.
I was once asked by another member. Is it very much work?

I know, but I thought maybe other members have photos of these accidents.

Thanks, interesting read.

Despite the fast nature of the track, there were no fatal crashes?

Two driver fatalities: Mark Donohue in 1975 before Austrian GP and local touring racer Hannes Wustinger in 1994. Plus 2 marshals - one killed by Roland Moser in 1970 and one involved in Donohue's crash.

And one motorcycle rider: Hans-Peter Klampfer during practice for round of Austrian Motorcycle Championship in 1993.
