Should we password protect the database, forcing users to sign up and log in to view it?

At the moment I have NO idea how many people use it and I want to find out. All I know is - the new Index page has received 450 views this month and the actual lists have received well over 5000 hits.

1.: Is it possible to create a "free preview" visitors don't have to sign up for?
By that, I mean: Create a page everyone can see that always shows 10-15 different photos (or crashes) from a total of ~40. People would quickly realize the quality of our work but still need to sign up if they want to see the complete database.

2.: The need of an acount would definitely be a small safety mechanism to prevent copyright claims that would force you/us to take photographs offline.

The idea is to keep the Index page unprotected: http://www.the-fastlane.co.uk/cpdb/index_list.php

As soon as you click 'Browse Database', that is when you would need to log in.
