Hmm.

One way or another they're not seeing the value.

I wonder if it's just too expensive at the moment, or if there simply aren't enough eyeballs watching (any time I catch more than 10 seconds of FE, I get bored and swap channels).

Macau F3 and GT World Cup races cancelled again

Cancelled last year due to the Covid situation (compounded by the Macau ruling of non China residents needing to get exempuion visas plus also do a 14 day quarantine period. The race technically was run, but it was only for Chinese resident F4 drivers so clearly not what we know as the Macau GP.

Anyway the event has been pulled again for this year. Same reasons, except I think their quarantine needs on arrival for non Chinese are up to 21 days from 14.

It was planned that the events would be held as normal from 17-21 November this year, pending travel restrictions being lifted, but an FIA statement released on Thursday that the Macanese government will not adjust its quarantine requirements in the foreseeable future.

WTCR's season finale will instead be held at Russian Grand Prix venue Sochi.
The statement said: "With the majority of competitors taking part in the FIA events coming from outside the region, this presents the drivers, teams and suppliers with conditions that are difficult to comply with.

"As a result, the FIA Formula 3 World Cup and FIA GT World Cup will not take place in 2021, with the aim of returning next year."

Peter Bayer, FIA Secretary General Sport said: “For many years, the Macau Grand Prix has been a season-ending tradition for much of the motor sport world and it holds special significance for the FIA as the only event to feature three different FIA World Cups on the same event schedule.

“While we will miss not being there ourselves, we wish the organisers a safe and successful Macau Grand Prix in November and we will start working immediately towards the 2022 event.”

Think, I've said before that it'd be much safer (for F1) to actually remote control their race cars from a simulator.
The self-claimed Formula one of touring cars
But wait for F1 calling something similar some time. I wouldn't be too surprised, really.

Kein Pilot an Bord
Die Zukunft des Rennsports – ferngesteuert und elektrisch
20.10.2021Autor / Redakteur: Bernhard Lück / Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Andreas Donner

The future of racing – remote controlled and electric
20.10.2021Author / Editor: Bernhard Lück / Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Andreas Donner
Cisco, Schaeffler, DTM and Riedel Networks continue to develop racing. The DTM Electric Demo Car drove the 4326-meter-long course in Styria (Austria). However, the pilot did not sit in the cockpit, but about 80 kilometers away in a simulator.

At the beginning of September, reigning DTM Trophy champion Tim Heinemann drove the DTM Electric Demo Car over the racetrack in Spielberg, Austria. He himself was in Graz, more than 80 kilometers away.

Remote control of a race car at speeds of up to 200 km/h requires all systems involved, and in particular the underlying network, to operate at the highest levels of performance and reliability. International Touring Car Racing (ITR), rights holder of the DTM racing series, and automotive supplier Schaeffler chose to work with Cisco and Riedel Group, a real-time transmission specialist with experience in motorsport, to demonstrate this innovation in connectivity.

Cisco provided the routers for the network connection (SD-WAN) between the simulator and the racetrack, the control of the car was carried out using 5G technology. The Riedel and Cisco network operates with a latency of two milliseconds and can thus transmit image, communication and the signals of the remote control with the highest possible reliability. This type of communication is not only essential for the autonomous transport of the future, but also for critical processes in production, says Cisco.

We dont seem to have a current Formula E thread here and it does not seem to inspire much discussion on the forum so I will just post this news here.

I say news as to me, despite given the move towards EV's in their core road vehicles, many of the manufacturers are bailing out of the Formula. Being one who rarely watches FE, and then only if I stumble upon it by chance, I am perhaps not qualified to comment with authority, but Mercedes / Daimler have chosen to join the FE quitters at the end of the 2022 season. (ISTR FE have a more off traditional season calendar spanning two years (ie 20/21, 21/22, 22/23 etc) so how it fits in Im not sure. It seems to say they wont be around for the 22/23 season. *Edit: Just checked the FE Calendar and the 22 season runs from January to August*

Im also not sure whether it is an in-house factory operated team or a funded by Merc third party deal as were BMW with Andretti and in F1 speak Alfa with Sauber.

It seems like (for Merc) FE was only a short term Marketing exercise more to promote and establish the Merc EQ range as existing. I get the impression that FE is a fairly costly exercise, and the money is best focussed in other activities.

Anyway the news and more importantly, their reasons for quitting suggest that maybe FE is not the platform it was built up to be in terms of following. I guess also the news of F1 becoming more electrified is seen as a better vehicle to show in this case Mercs EV orientated progression in "EV" technology and skills.

One thing in my mind with all the "F1 is now our overall Motorsport core," it does seem to squash any thought of Mercedes quitting F1. (He says with confidence! Cue Merc to quit F1 news)

Anyway....

Mercedes has officially confirmed it will pull out of Formula E after the 2022 season,

....... saying it wants Formula 1 to be its sole factory motorsport focus – but keeping the door open for its FE team to continue without it.

After months of uncertainty over Mercedes’ Formula E plans, it emerged on Sunday – just hours before the team and driver Nyck de Vries clinched the first FE titles to carry FIA world championship status – that the Daimler board had decided against continuing the programme into the Gen3 era that begins with the 2022/23 season.

That decision was formally confirmed by the company on Wednesday morning.

Mercedes recently announced that its automotive business would be entirely electric by the end of the 2020s – a strategy that a Formula E programme seemed the ideal complement to.

But Markus Schafer, the board member responsible for Daimler Group Research and also chief operating officer of Mercedes-Benz cars, intimated that the resources required for this transformation meant Formula E could no longer be justified and that Mercedes’ ultra-successful F1 programme was a sufficient motorsport proving ground.

The Mercedes F1 team is now only one-third owned by Daimler, with team principal Toto Wolff and sponsor Ineos having the other stakes, and through a mixture of F1’s cost cuts, the team’s sponsorship deals and its prize money the amount of financial input required from Daimler has reduced substantially.

“At Mercedes-Benz, we have committed ourselves to fighting climate change at full force in this decade,” said Schafer.

“This demands the accelerated transformation of our company, products and services towards an emission-free and software-driven future, and to achieve this, we must give full focus to our core activities.

“In motorsport, Formula E has been a good driver for proving our expertise and establishing our Mercedes-EQ brand, but in future we will keep pushing technological progress – especially on the electric drive side – focusing on Formula 1.

“It is the arena where we constantly test our technology in the most intense competition the automotive world has to offer – and the three-pointed star hardly shines brighter anywhere else.

“F1 offers rich potential for technology transfer, as we can see in ongoing projects such as the Vision EQXX, and our team and the entire series will achieve net-zero status by the end of the decade.”

Bettina Fetzer, Mercedes’ vice president of marketing said “Over the last two years, Formula E has enabled us to showcase the Mercedes-EQ brand in a highly endemic and truly innovative format.”

“On a strategic level, however, Mercedes-AMG will be positioned and strengthened as our performance brand through its close alignment to our record-breaking Formula 1 team, and F1 will be our company’s works motorsport focus for the years ahead.”

Would be interesting to know what fan base FE has.

It's just gimmicky crap any time I tune in that I immediately switch away. As you said, I just see it as a marketing exercise.

I'm heading to the Race of Champions this weekend, this time to be held in Piteå in the north of Sweden. Looks to be the most interesting RoC in a long, long time. Not in a football stadium this time, but on the frozen Baltic sea. A stellar group of drivers around also, some with pretty much zero ice driving experience.

Looking forward to it a lot!

Yeah I was reading up on the pairings for this weekend..... JJ v Mika Hakkinen and Petter Solberg v Seb Loeb. Cant imagine JJ racing on ice tbh.

Hopefully it will be on TV or a stream will appear to watch it. Anyway enjoy. Looks like it wont be a shorts and T shirt weekend! :haha:

A bit of info on it here. :https://www.raceofchampions.com/post/dr ... wedish-ice

Edit: Whoops sorry just noticed you put a link to the ROC website in. (The link I posted is the draw for tthe weekend)
