Bottom post of the previous page:

They have to stop this social media keyboard warrior bullshit.

De Villiers: Death threats after Dakar bike crashes "upsetting"

Giniel de Villiers says it was “upsetting” to receive online abuse and death threats after he was involved in two separate incidents with motorcycle riders on the 2022 Dakar.

I know I called him out as a seemingly bit of a thug (which I later rescinded when the second incident was ruled to be not his fault and indeed not the hit and run it was initially reported as,) but death threats. Really? Bloody lowlife out there hiding behind their keyboards.

Sanders out of Dakar.... :tearful: :sorrow:

And he did not even make it to the start of todays stage. Aussie Sanders, who having won the last stage was due to lead the bikes off on stage 7 crashed out on the liason section to the stage start according to the live timing..... and has been taken to hospital. He is not seriously injured although it is to do with his arm.

Shame as he was 3rd overall and only 5 minutes off the lead. So a bad couple of days for Aussie bikers with Houlihan having to quit with broken ribs. Just Toby Price left in it for Australia now. (in the bikes aanyway) He is down in 12th but is the fastest bike s far today..

He is today having surgery on a broken wrist and fractured elbow. Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

STAGE 7

BIKES

First day out from the rest day and the bikes are still close at the top, albeit now slightly depleted with the loss of the likes of Houlihan and my until his crash, tip for the bike win, sanders. We also today have a new leader in the bikes, Monster Energy Yamaha’s Adrien Van Beveren. Previous leader Sunderland dropped to 4th overall but as said it is all close and a bad or good day can see a total turnaround. In fact positions 2-5 are covered by about one minute!

Stage 8 coming up later today takes the field 830km from Al Dawadimi to Wadi Ad Dawasir, including a 395km special. A big day.

General classification: Bikes Top 10 (ok top 11 I included the fast charging Toby Price now 11th but less than 30 minutes off the lead.)

CARS

In the cars Al-Attiya has a fairly comfortable lead of about 45 minutes and it looks to me like he isjust in no risk cruise mode, happy to finish with a few minutes of the pace setters.

Loeb is now back to second overall with another stage win in the Prodrive.... somewhat fortunate as he had an engine problem for the last 50 klms. Without that problem...... Anyway he led Al-Attiyay by over 5 minutes at the end with Sainz a couple of minutes further back and Stephane Peterhansel fourth in another Audi RS Q e-tron and Overdrive Toyota’s Yazeed Al Rajhi fifth for the day.

De Villiers, back to 4th after his rescinded penalty had technical issues needing help and he has dropped back to 8th overall.

Good to see Tom and Tim Coronel still running in the top 20 although Stage 7 saw them finish 35th.

5 stages to go now.....

Tim and Tom Coronel out of the Dakar Rally 2022

Tim and Tom Coronel will no longer start in the eighth stage of the Dakar Rally. Tim has too much trouble with his back, the brothers don’t think it’s responsible to drive. “Health comes first,” says Tom from the bivouac in Al Dawadimi.

Tim Coronel injured his back on Friday in the sixth stage. Intensive physiotherapy on the rest day seemed to help and yesterday the brothers started the seventh stage. That worked, but it wasn’t easy. This morning it turned out Tim’s back was worse. “He can barely walk,” says Tom. “He’s done the Dakar fifteen times now, I’ve done ten times. There will be another one next year.”

Damn it. I put the curse on them saying they were still running well and in the top 20 in my last stage report...... that might explain their sudden fall to run 35th in stage 7.

A shame. They are always one of my favourite crews.

Bit of a mechanical scare for Al-Attiyah as Ekstrom wins Stage 8 .

Al-Attiyah has survived a mechanical scare to continue to lead the Dakar Rally, as Audi’s Mattias Ekstrom picked up a maiden stage win.

A-A completed a majority of the stage in front-wheel drive due to a rear differential issue for his Hilux and while he lost seven minutes relative to Sebastien Loeb, his overall lead to the Frenchman is still 37:58s. He ended up 11th on the day, but it could have been so much worse.

Both A-A and Loeb suffered punctures on Stage 8, from Al Dawadimi to Wadi Ad Dawasir, and Loeb even lost his other spare wheel along the way, although he escaped a time penalty for that incident.

Ekstrom won the stage by 49 seconds over team-mate Stephane Peterhansel, despite the latter having to stop to change a bonnet which he smashed on a dune, Loeb finished 3rd and Carlos Sainz took fourth in the other RS Q e-tron

Sunderland regains Dakar lead, Price into top 10

I said we could expect some position changes at the top of the bikes order and it has happened already.

Sunderland had lost top spot when he was only 28th-quickest on the last stage, but hit back by taking out stage 8 by a margin of 2:53s. he is 3:45s to the good in the overall classification, with Matthias Walkner second and Adrien Van Beveren dropping from first overall to third.

Price moved up from 11th to ninth for the rally but, in finishing sixth on Stage 8, he lost 8:39s relative to Sunderland and is now an enlarged 32:30s from the top.

Extended highlights for Stage 8

Not spoken much about other classes outside cars and bikes, so lets put that right.

In Trucks, Dmitry Sotnikov stretched his margin over Kamaz-Master team-mate Eduard Nikolaev to 11:25s at the head of the overall classification by taking out the stage.

Quads is still headed overall by Alexandre Giroud (Yamaha Racing – SMX), and likewise Light Prototype by Francisco Lopez Contardo (EKS – South Racing).

Al-Attiyah penalised for safety infringement..... gap tightens for the lead.

I will start by saying yes the gap has closed but it was nearly 40 minutes and the 5 minute penalty has brought the gap down but not by much. (Still 34 minutes)

The penalty was applied because A-A suffered a puncture, both he and his co-driver got out to change the wheel, and then drove off before they had fastened their safety belts, and tried to do them whilst driving. Eventually they succeeded.
Specifically, stewards found that Al-Attiyah and co-driver Matthieu Baumel did not have their seatbelts properly fastened for almost two minutes after stopping to change a puncture.

“After boarding the vehicle, the driver engaged the gear and started the vehicle,” read the stewards report.

“Furthermore, the [onboard] video shows that the crew was busy for 1 minute 45 seconds properly fastening the seat belts.

“For a short time, the co-driver even held the steering wheel to give the driver the opportunity to fasten his seat belt.”
De Villiers won Stage 9, from Henk Lategan.with Al-Attiyah 3rd. Fourth went to the previous day’s stage winner, Audi Sport’s Mattias Ekstrom in one of the RS Q e-trons, with Loeb taking fifth.

Walkner into Dakar lead as Price slips back

Matthias Walkner has moved into the lead of the Dakar Rally with three stages to go but Toby Price has slipped out of the top 10.

Honda’s Jose Ignacio Cornejo Florimo won Stage 9, a 287km special around Wadi Ad Dawasir, while Walkner was 2:06s back in fourth.

However, with Sam Sunderland another 5:57s further behind in 14th on the day, Sam dropped from first to second in the overall classification, 2:12s behind Walkner.

Price fell two positions to 11th overall, 35:14s behind Walkner, after coming 17th on Stage 9.

STAGE 10

CARS
Peterhansel wins Stage 10, Al-Attiyah retains big Dakar lead

Peterhansel has picked up his first stage win of Dakar 2022 in his Audi..... but Al-Attiyah continues to hold a commanding overall lead with two days to go. It was an Audi 1-2 as Sainz came 2nd.
Third was Loeb’s Bahrain Raid Xtreme team-mate Orlando Terranova, with fourth going to Henk Lategan. Loeb himself was fifth-quickest, 4:25s off Peterhansel’s pace, but it was not enough to make much of a dent on Al-Attiyah’s advantage.
(Al-Attiyah was seventh-quickest on Stage 10 at 1:25s slower than his nearest rival for the win, Seb Loeb.)

A-A is actually being quite clever..... he is now with a lead that means he does not need to go for stage wins and clock busting times..... he can reduce risk of any damage and finish top 10 all is good with just a couple of days left. The added benefit of that being he is not having to lead stages off from the start, and in effect reduce the risk of navigational errors by following the tracks.

Its just a bit of a shame the Audi's, which seem to have stage winning pace, all had issues in the very early stages, issues which just put them too far back in the rankings to be an overall factor.

The bikes of course are much closer with the overall lead position changing daily.....

Price wins Stage 10 as Van Beveren reclaims Dakar lead

Toby Price has won Stage 10 of the 2022 Dakar Rally while Yamaha’s Adrien Van Beveren reclaimed the overall lead. Sam Sunderland remains second overall, albeit further from the lead than when he started the day.

Price is now up to sixth overall but is still 27:43s behind Van Beveren, whose margin over the field is a healthy 6 minutes,Pablo Quintanilla would have taken second off Sunderland but instead rose only to third, 6:15s from the top, once a two-minute penalty was added to his time.

Matthias Walkner dropped from first to fourth, another 2:09s back after finishing 27th on the day, with Joan Barreda Bort fifth

Last years winner Kevin Benavides was forced to drop out today with assorted mechanical issues. He had started the day fifth.

STAGE 11

Al-Attiyah’s Dakar lead grows further ahead of final stage

All over bar the shouting now with A-A continuing to use his lead wisely and be happy with finishing stages in the top 10 or within minutes of his main competitors. Whilst he can cruise those potential challengers have to rag it and take risks. In fact his nearest challenger, Loeb beat A-A by 4 minutes in the penultimate stage but got a penalty of 5 minutes for speeding in a restricted area and so A-A's lead actually grew, even though he finished down in 7th. With the penalty applied Loeb finished the stage 8th.

Sainz again showed the pace of the Audi taking out the stage win.....Toyota’s Lucio Alvarez ended up in second position, at 3:10s slower than Sainz, with Audi’s Mattias Ekstrom third. Nani Roma was fourth in the second of the BRX Hunters, Toyota Gazoo Racing’s Giniel De Villiers took fifth, and Stephane Peterhansel made it all three Audis in the top six.

All that is to come now is the return to Jeddah, a 680km journey, but one which includes a special stage of only 164km.

Sunderland moves to sizeable lead on second-last stage of Dakar

Sam Sunderland has moved to an overall lead of almost seven minutes after finishing second on the second-last stage of the 2022 Dakar Rally.

He set the pace for most of Stage 11 but was ultimately pipped by Kevin Benavides by four seconds.

Still, Sunderland was much quicker than those who mattered, including beating pre-stage rally leader Adrien Van Beveren by more than 21 minutes.

Sunderland now leads by 6:52s over Pablo Quintanilla, with Matthias Walkner back up to third spot at another 23 seconds back.

With just a relative short, 164km special stage to come, Quintanilla and Walkner appear longshots for the title now, and Van Beveren especially so given he fell to 15:30s off the pace.

Toby Price dropped from sixth to 10th overall, 52:27s off top spot, after setting the 28th-fastest time

Al-Attiyah clinches Dakar title for Toyota, Sunderland wins the Bikes.

CARS

As predicted A-A and S.S took the car and bike category wins with no surprises on the final short stage. Loeb finished 2nd, some near 28 minutes adrift. This matches his best previous Dakar finish. Yazeed Al Rajhi was the best of the independents in the Overdrive Toyota, finishing behind Loeb on the overall podium in third. 4th overall was Bahrain Raid Xtreme’s Orlando Terranova and 5th Toyota Gazoo’s Giniel De Villiers.

The title is Al-Attiyah's 4th and Toyota's second win at a Dakar after Al-Attiyah drove a Hilux to the win three years ago in Peru, following his triumphs with Mini in 2015 and Volkswagen in 2011.

A-A won only two of the 12 stages, both in the first week, but showed remarkable consistency throughout the rally-raid, while his rivals fell by the wayside with navigational errors or mechanical problems.

The result makes Al-Attiyah the second-most successful driver in the history of Dakar’s cars category, tied with Finland’s Ari Vatanen and only behind Stephane Peterhansel’s tally of eight wins.

BIKES

Sam Sunderland has won his second Dakar Rally Bike title after finishing ninth on the 12th and final stage.

He ended up winning by 3:27s to deliver GasGas its first crown in rally-raid’s blue riband event, five years after he triumphed for sister marque KTM.

Despite winning Stage 12, Pablo Quintanilla could not make any advance on second position overall, while KTM’s Matthias Walkner rounded out the rally podium ahead of Adrien Van Beveren and Joan Barreda Bort..

I cant give the final car classification yet are they are still finishing but here is the final top 10 for the bike.

General Final classification: Bikes Top 10

Pos Rider Nat Team Time/Gap
1 Sam Sunderland GBR GasGas Factory Racing 38:47:30

WRC 2022 starts now! Monte Carlo will begin with 2 stages tonight, been watching a bit of the presentation beforehand, glad to see there is a GT class in rallying, including Francois Delecour in an Alpine in car #47!

It's gonna be Ogier vs. Loeb! Duel of the titans. Fantastic that Loeb still got it, only one even close to Ogier's time on SS1.
