Van Gisbergen wins New Zealand GP from pitlane start.

SVG made a clean sweep of all three races over the weekend, ending by winning the final race, the NZGP having had to start from pitlane when pre-race he set off the fire extinguisher, the cleanup and recharge of the system meaning he missed the dummy grid deadline.

After a wet qualifying session for the GP SVG qualified only tenth, and thought it would be difficult from there.... then the fire extinguisher drama made things worse.
Shane van Gisbergen has won the New Zealand Grand Prix in extraordinary circumstances, charging through the field after starting from the pit lane.

It was a frenetic 28-lap affair that saw drama kick off even before the feature event got underway when van Gisbergen set off his fire extinguisher.

What followed was a frantic effort to clean his Toyota FT-60 and refill his fire extinguisher before the start of the race.

Despite those efforts, the team was unable to get the car ready in time, missing the cut-off time to exit the pit lane.

As a result, the Kiwi couldn’t take to the grid and instead had to start from the pit lane.

What followed was a passing frenzy, coming through the field from 16th to take the lead with 10 laps to go.

From there, the Kiwi was unchallenged, leading home fellow Supercars driver Andre Heimgartner and Castrol Toyota Racing Series rookie Matthew Payne.

“Some numpty went to start the car and pushed the fire extinguisher button, so she was a bit of a panic,” said van Gisbergen.

“That was my fault. I thought it was all over. Man, the car was awesome. Perfect Safety Car, and then, yeah, I don’t know how the front wing is still on the thing. I had to rough up a few guys.

“That was unreal. It’s been an awesome weekend. I’m pretty speechless. I thought it was going to be hard from 10th, let alone the pit lane.”

After a wet qualifying session on Sunday morning, Toyota Racing Series debutant Kaleb Ngatoa lined up alongside former Supercars driver Dan Gaunt.

Ngatoa took the holeshot into Turn 1 but had Gaunt at his outside on the run down to the Turn 2 hairpin, the four-time Bathurst 1000 starter sweeping around the outside and into the lead.

At the end of the opening lap it was Gaunt who led Ngatoa with Chris van der Drift, Andre Heimgartner, and Greg Murphy in tow.

The experienced van der Drift soon made his way through on Ngatoa, completing a pass on Lap 4.

It wasn’t long before van Gisbergen caught the back of the field, making his way through to 12th.

Drama struck on Lap 6 when van der Drift clipped the back of Gaunt’s right rear wheel, resulting in a damaged front wing for the trailing Tasman Motorsports Group-backed entry.

Gaunt continued on unabated while van der Drift came to the pit lane to fit a new front wing.

Moments later and the Safety Car was deployed after Peter Vodanovich parked his car between the Dipper and the final corner.

As the yellow flag flew, the order was Gaunt from Ngatoa, Heimgartner, Matthew Payne, Damon Leitch, Greg Murphy, Brendon Leitch, Tom Alexander, van Gisbergen, and Conrad Clark.

The race restarted on Lap 10 and it wasn’t long before van Gisbergen began scything through the field.

First, he picked off Murphy, then began hassling the Leitch brothers.

Younger brother Brendon gave van Gisbergen his biggest challenge, last year’s Bathurst 1000 winner briefly passing the Toyota Racing Series regular.

Leitch mounted a fightback, however, diving down the inside at the Turn 2 hairpin and snatching the place away.

Come Lap 14, Heimgartner made his way through on Ngatoa at Turn 2. Moments later and van Gisbergen was through to fourth.

Van Gisbergen continued to hustle, dive-bombing Ngatoa at the Dipper to move into the podium places come Lap 15.

With 11 laps to go, van Gisbergen lunged at the Dipper, demoting Heimgartner to third.

A lap later and van Gisbergen was through on Gaunt at the Turn 7 hairpin. That allowed Heimgartner to follow through and into second.

The closing stages of the race saw Gaunt fade while Payne came through to third after an intense fight with Ngatoa.

Soon enough, van Gisbergen stretched his legs out to a two-second lead over Heimgartner and claim an emphatic victory.

Payne completed the podium with Ngatoa fourth and van der Drift fifth, recovering after his early pit stop.

The Leitch brothers Damon and Brendon were sixth and seventh while the top 10 was completed by Gaunt, Billy Frazer, and Murphy.

Haven't seen the race, but that's pretty amazing... Saw race 1 yesterday and it looked pretty hard to pass.

It turns out SVG got a bit clumsy and confused, hitting the fire extinguisher button and not the starter button.
Here is his side of what happened pre start.
Shane van Gisbergen says he was left with sore eyes and sodden after accidentally setting off his fire extinguisher minutes before starting the New Zealand Grand Prix.

What followed was a frantic effort from van Gisbergen’s team to clean his car and refill the extinguisher before starting the race.

Last year’s Bathurst 1000 winner was set to start 11th, but was forced to start the race from the pit lane after failing to exit it in time.

With only a few minutes to spare, van Gisbergen replaced his visor and tear-offs but raced on with wet overalls.

Van Gisbergen feared he wouldn’t be able to make the race.

“I flicked the ignition and went to start it and I must have flicked the fire extinguisher,” said van Gisbergen.

“I’ve never done that in my life. I got all the stuff in my eyes and wondered what was happening. Turns out I had pressed the wrong button.

“It was panic stations, trying to get a new visor and trying to get some tear-offs. There were plug leads coming out everywhere.

“I was trying to clean up the car and didn’t know whether we could run. I didn’t know if we could do a formation lap or start from the grid.

“I was covered. I had to get some new gloves. My eyes were burning. I’ve never had a fire extinguisher go off before. It was crazy.

“I had my visor open as I went to start the car. And then of course we were panicking, got it running, but just missed the pit exit.”

Van Gisbergen was able to complete the warm-up lap before returning to the pit lane.

As he came upon 15th place starter Ken Smith, the 2016 Supercars Championship title winner signalled the 79-year-old to slow down so he could make it to the pit exit in time.

In the end, van Gisbergen made it to the end of the pit lane with time in hand.

“I was trying to tell him to slow down,” said van Gisbergen.

“I didn’t know how long it’d take for me to get to the end [of pit lane]. I was waving at him, ‘Slow down!’ But I accelerated down the pit lane so I knew I would make the end.

“I couldn’t hear anything. I didn’t know when the light was going to go. I just stayed ready. I’ve never started from pit lane before.”

Wow! Hope he will find his speed again, but above all the same fun he had before the crash.

There was a time when it seemed he might have trouble walking normally again let alone get back to racing. Wish him all the best of luck and hopefully he can make back to F2 at least.

I was reading about his recovery process, and it is quite remarkable he is back in a car so soon, indeed at all. Immediately after the accident, he spent over two weeks in a coma, and suffering severe injuries to his lungs, spine, and legs. Once he was out of immediate danger, he underwent a series of over 20 surgeries leaving him needing to spend 14 months living with a metal frame on his right leg. Then began an intense rehabilitation programme back home.

In his words "I am walking a bit already without any help, I am also walking quite big distances with the help of a crutch, so I am slowly regaining a sort of normal life.”

He is clearly very motivated to get himself back in a car. Of course he has yet to overcome the mental/emotional challenge of getting back in a car following a fatal accident and the physical recovery process. He also needs to work on his actual race fitness.

Wish him the very best of luck.
