It seems the cause of death was Huntington's Disease, from which he had suffered and battled for many years. It is I believe the reason behind his stopping racing. Whilst treatable, it is not curable. :rip:
Huntington's disease is a rare, inherited disease that causes the progressive breakdown (degeneration) of nerve cells in the brain. Huntington's disease has a broad impact on a person's functional abilities and usually results in movement, thinking (cognitive) and psychiatric disorders.

Huntington's disease symptoms can develop at any time, but they often first appear when people are in their 30s or 40s. If the condition develops before age 20, it's called juvenile Huntington's disease. When Huntington's develops early, symptoms are somewhat different and the disease may progress faster.

Medications are available to help manage the symptoms of Huntington's disease. But treatments can't prevent the physical, mental and behavioural decline associated with the condition.

Sadly all I remember of him was his IMSA dealings with his father (IMSA at that time jokingly well known / referred as the International Marijuana Smuggling Assoc.) I know his Father was known to be a nasty piece of work and several people known to him mysteriously vanished, and he spent a long time behind bars (Junior also for a few years due to links with his Father 'operations.' Sadly the Father has outlived the son, although I think Senior is currently missing / on the run from authorities over his disappeared ex girlfriend.

Without checking I seem to remember Junior was vaguely talented as a driver, and won a few majors.

RIP John Paul Jnr
Having seen a few CART races of the era, the guy could peddle.

Evidently, he didn't just peddle cars.

A wasted talent.

RIP.

The one on JPjnr is particularly interesting, indeed eye opening. Seems like he was a nice guy. Very sad, and a horrible disease.

I dont know much at all about Oscar Kovaleski so will read that later.

Not a good start to the New Year, although I guess in the US it was to end the year.
Thoughts and condolences to Mario and Family. I know Mario and Aldo were very close.

RIP Aldo Andretti

I found this pic in one of the comments on the link from Mario's Tweet.

#2 Mario Andretti & #55 Aldo Andretti @ Oswego Speedway, July 16th, 1967.
Mario won the race.

Yea, was a big fan CART back in the 1980s, and Pat Patrick was a major part of that. They were often one of the top two teams out there. He always seemed like the good guy (compared to the more calculating Roger Penske). Sad to here he is gone. Hope he had a good run.

Dakar Rally Racing Legend Hubert Auriol Has Died Aged 68

Image

DAKAR Rally racing legend Hubert Auriol has sadly died aged 68 on Sunday, January 10 “from a cardiovascular accident following a long battle against the disease *,” according to his family.

The world of motor racing is in mourning after learning the news that Hubert Auriol, a legendary car and motorbike driver and former director of the Paris-Dakar rally, died today.

Nicknamed “the African”, not only because he was born in 1952 in Ethiopia but also because of his success on the tracks of the famous rally-raid, he was the first to win the race both in motorbike (1981 and 1983) and by car (1992).

In 1995, he became the new boss of the Dakar Rally, a position he held until 2004. It was under his direction that the rally-raid would set off for the first time outside France, from Spain (Granada in 1995, 1996 and 1999) and even from Dakar (1997 and 2000).

His face will be even more familiar to the French public after he became the first presenter of the reality show “Koh-Lanta” on TF 1 in 2001 before Denis Brogniart succeeded him.

Hubert Auriol also holds the record of the being one the fastest people, along with Henri Pescarolo, Patrick Fourtick and Arthur Powell, to circumnavigate the world in a propeller plane, in 1987 – shortly after his terrible motorbike accident, where he broke both his ankles – in a flight that took a little over 88 hours.

A brief obituary explains more of this wonderful creator of motorsport stories and superb artwork
Jean Graton has passed away
Posted on January 21, 2021
Jean Graton, the author of comics born in Nantes in 1923, died this Thursday, January 21, 2021 in Brussels at the age of 97, surrounded by his family.

Jean Graton, creator of Michel Vaillant , has fashioned a unique and admirable work that has amazed several generations of young and old comic book readers. A true ambassador of motorsport, he created a family, a company and a brand, which still shine today in bookstores and around the racing circuits. Among these readers of Michel Vaillant , several have become F1 drivers, among the greatest, journalists and even designers, Jean Graton knew how to convey his passion in style.

He was the first to understand that to tell stories, you had to be inspired by reality. Jean Graton attended races almost all over the world, making friends with the drivers, team managers and circuit directors, accumulating thousands of photos and documents which give his work the cachet of authenticity. This and his innate sense of movement and storytelling have made Michel Vaillant an exemplary series that is respected by all motorsport lovers.

But Jean Graton was not only the creator of Michel Vaillant , he was a formidable designer: let us remember the illustrations of the newspaper Les Sports , les Belles Histoires de l'Oncle Paul in Spirou, the covers and Complete Stories of the newspaper Tintin , Julie Wood, the Labourdets.

Commander of Arts and Letters, Knight of the Order of Leopold, Jean Graton was the last sacred monster of the golden age of Franco-Belgian comics. His friends and colleagues were called Goscinny, Uderzo, Charlier, Peyo, Roba, Franquin, ...

He died peacefully in Brussels at the age of 97, surrounded by his family.

We are all saddened by his passing and our hearts go out to his loved ones, especially Philippe Graton.

Here is a short video that shows glimpses of the artwork.

Ex-F1 racer and team owner Adrian Campos dies aged 60

Image

Team owner and former Minardi Formula 1 driver Adrian Campos has passed away at the age of 60.

Over the years the ever enthusiastic Campos played a role in furthering the careers of dozens of drivers, including Fernando Alonso.

The news was announced by his team, who said: “Today is the saddest day in the history of Campos Racing. Our President and founder, Adrian Campos Suner, has left us.

"His heart stopped beating, but his memory will be the engine that will keep us all fighting to continue his legacy ... Rest in Peace.”

Born in Valencia in 1960, Campos competed with radio controlled model cars before moving into racing proper in his native Spain. He quickly graduated to Formula 3, competing in the European series in 1983. He scored his first points the following year.

In 1985 he focussed on the German F3 series, in which he finished third behind Volker Weidler and Kris Nissen. He was also entered in a Tyrrell at the Nurburgring Formula 3000 event, but the race was cancelled due to snow.

In 1986 he made the fulltime jump to F3000 with Peter Gethin Racing. In a packed field he failed to qualify his March several times, and his best result was seventh in his home race at Jarama, after a late switch to the Lola Motorsport team. He also drove a Porsche 956 for John Fitzpatrick in the World Sportscar Championship event at Jerez.

Despite his low-key F3000 season, Campos found the backing to jump straight into F1 with Minardi in 1987, as team mate to Alessandro Nannini. He had a difficult time with the unreliable Motor Moderni-powered car, and his only classified finish was 14th at Jerez.

He stayed with the team as it switched to Cosworth power for the 1988 season, joined by countryman Luiz Perez Sala. He started the first two races, but after three non-qualifications in what was by then a packed field, he left the team and was replaced by Pierluigi Martini.

Later Campos switched his focus to touring cars, winning the Spanish title in 1994 with an Alfa Romeo. In 1997 he raced a Ferrari 333SP, making his only Le Mans 24 Hours start that year, before retiring from active driving to form his own team.

Focussing initially on Spain’s growing Open by Nissan series, Campos Motorsport won the title with Marc Gene in 1998, future F1 champion Alonso in 1999 and Antonio Garcia in 2000.

In 2005 the team entered the new GP2 category under the Campos Grand Prix name. After two low-key years, the team made a big step in 2007, finishing third in the series with Giorgio Pantano, who scored two wins. The following year Lucas di Grassi earned third, and with support from Vitaly Petrov, Campos won the teams’ title.

Campos then took the bold decision to move into F1, and his GP2 team found new ownership under the Addax name.

Having gained an F1 entry as Campos Grand Prix he began to prepare for the 2010 season. Ultimately financial problems saw a change of ownership and the team morphed into HRT before its first race weekend.

Having gone back to the junior categories in Spain, Campos moved into the WTCC with SEAT in 2013, before joining forces with Chevrolet. The Campos name returned to GP2 in 2014, with Alexander Rossi among the drivers, before moving into GP3 in 2015.

Campos also became involved in the new Formula E category, partnering the NEXTEV TCR team and winning the first title in 2014-15 with Nelson Piquet Jr, before hooking up with Mahindra.

Campos had a difficult first year in the first year of the rebranded F2 series in 2017, when after running a revolving door of drivers it gave Lando Norris his first outing in the category in the Abu Dhabi finale.

In 2019 the team scored three wins with Jack Aitken, who finished fifth in the championship. Aitken stayed on board in 2020, while Ralph Boschung, who drove for the team in Abu Dhabi last year, has been signed for this season.

Many former drivers and associates have been quick to pay tribute to Campos, who died of a sudden coronary disease, according to his team.

Aitken, who was released by Campos to make his F1 debut with Williams last year, said: "Adrian, RIP. You were so kind, true to your word, competitive, mischievous, wise.

"You always knew exactly what to say to me, because at heart you were still a driver. And you created a family at Campos full of brilliant, talented people, who will miss you dearly. I will too.”

The Mahindra Formula E team said: “Woven into the very fabric of motorsport, Adrian was a kind, decent man who was highly respected in the industry.

“He was an integral part of the growth and successes of Mahindra Racing in Formula E. and we will never forget his contribution. We pass our sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. He will be sorely missed.”
