Former Lotus racer Johnny Dumfries passes away, aged 62

https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/arti ... ObvoO.html

Johnny Dumfries, who started 15 Grands Prix for Lotus in the 1986 season, has passed away at the age of 62.

Dumfries, the 7th Marquess of Bute, whose real name was John Colum Crichton-Stuart, was most famous for partnering Ayrton Senna at Lotus for the 1986 season – the Brazilian having allegedly chosen him over the tougher team mate prospect of Derek Warwick – with Dumfries achieving a best result of fifth at that year’s Hungarian Grand Prix in the team’s 98T.

He also achieved a sixth place at the 1986 Australian Grand Prix, where his car was famously adorned with an onboard camera, providing the footage you see in the video below.

Two years after his sole F1 season, Dumfries cemented his reputation as a more-than-useful pedaller by taking overall victory at the 1988 Le Mans 24 Hours alongside Jan Lammers and Andy Wallace, at the wheel of a Jaguar XJR-9LM.

In a statement confirming his passing after a short illness, Dumfries’ family said: “The indomitable spirit and energy which Johnny brought to his life will be greatly missed, and the immense warmth and love with which he embraced his family.”

If you want to learn more about his life – including his take on being team mates with Senna and driving vans for Frank Williams early in his career – tap here to listen to his appearance on F1's Beyond The Grid podcast last year.

Formula 1 sends its condolences to Johnny Dumfries’ family

For all his illicit operations to finance his Motor Racing he will still always have the credit (along with his brother Don) of being a Le Mans 24hr outright winner...... even if Klaus Ludwig did a vast percentage of the driving in their car.

Plenty of interesting stories surround him and his brother regarding his IMSA days, along with others, but he did the time and its a sad way for his life to end.

RIP Bill Whittington.

He also suffered some serious concussions from multiple bad accidents, wouldn't be surprised if his brain is used for CTE research. From what I can tell the crash at Talladega in 2012 started the health issues.

RIP.

Oh my....... :(

Rip Bobby.

'Got Bobby's autograph at that '68 Trenton race. Stuck it in a frame with a print of a painting of his Indy winning Rislone Eagle.'
It didn't start as it broke in qually (same day back then). He took over Mike Mosley's car (I fergit what it was, maybe a Gerhardt or a Watson or sumpin') ) for the race and finished somewhere down around tenth iirc.
Those were the days my friends, we thought they'd never end.....

CART race winner Andre Ribeiro dies at 55

Image

Former CART IndyCar Series driver Andre Ribiero has died after a fight with cancer.

Best known for delivering Honda’s first win in CART in 1995 at New Hampshire International Speedway, the Brazilian developed his skills at home and on the European open-wheel ladder before turning his attention to North America and the Indy Lights series.

Arriving in 1994 at the Ohio-based Tasman Motorsports team — two years before countrymen Helio Castroneves and Tony Kanaan would follow in his footsteps at the Steve Horne-led program — Ribiero was an instant contender, taking second in the championship on the strength of four wins.

He’d graduate to CART with Tasman the next year, and despite his limited experience on ovals, Ribeiro would deliver Honda its first of more than 100 IndyCar victories while at New Hampshire, and add two more oval wins with Tasman in 1996 at Rio and Michigan, despite making use of the less-favored Lola chassis.

After three seasons with Tasman in CART, Ribiero would close his top-tier racing career with Team Penske in 1998 — which coincided with one of the worst seasons on record for the storied program as its Penske PC27 chassis and Mercedes-Benz engine were no match for their rivals.

In retirement, Ribiero built upon his relationship with Penske, who joined him in establishing a successful auto dealership owner in Brazil.

Known for his warm personality outside the car and intensity behind the wheel, RACER extends its sympathies to Ribiero’s many friends and fans mourning his loss.

“I’m so sad to find out we lost of one of most inspired, positive persons on and off track,” Castroneves said. “Rest in peace my friend and I’m praying for your family.”
