DAKAR 2020

Sainz wins Car division
Brabec wins Bikes .

American biker Ricky Brabec put an end to Honda's 31-year drought and the 1year winning streak of KTM,

Image

Carlos Sainz took his third title in his third different car.

Carlos Sainz (Mini XRaid) has won the Dakar Rally for the third time while 2019 champion Nasser Al-Attiyah successfully saw off Stephane Peterhansel in the battle for second. Carlos was also a Dakar champion in 2010 in a Volkswagen and 2018 in a Peugeot.

Fernando Alonso rounded off his Dakar debut with a fourth on the final stage in his Toyota Gazoo Hilux and 13th overall. He was the best rookie finisher in cars.

Casey Currie gave America another reason to celebrate in the SSV race.

Ignacio Casale took back the throne in quads.

Andrey Karginov extended the victorious streak of the Kamaz trucks.

Coming from three consecutive victories, Eduard Nikolayev looked every bit the big favourite to win the 42nd edition of the rally. However, the defending champion was off the pace from the beginning and ended up withdrawing due to serious mechanical troubles with his Kamaz truck. The Russian maker showed the depth of its team, starting with 2014 champion Andrey Karginov. The 43-year-old bounced back from an uninspired performance in the opening stage to steal the show with seven stage wins and an infernal pace that left his rivals —and teammates— in the dust, to the point that runner-up Anton Shibalov finished over 42 minutes behind the leader

234 out of the 342 vehicles that started the rally in Jeddah (68.4%) appear in the final general classification: 96 motorbikes, 12 quads, 57 cars, 29 SSVs and 40 trucks.

A further 22 vehicles withdrew from the race but reached Qiddiya under Dakar Experience rules.

A first for America
And they won two categories this year....

Ricky Brabec became the first American to win the Dakar, beating SSV driver Casey Currie to the punch by a matter of minutes. It took 42 years to see the Stars and Stripes fluttering atop the podium, even though many Americans had come close to victory before. Back in 1985, Chuck Stearns finished sixth overall with six stage wins under his belt, while Danny Laporte was runner-up to Peterhansel in 1992. A few years later, Jimmy Lewis, now working as Brabec's trainer, took third place in 2000, followed by Chris Blaisa in fourth place in 2006. Robby Gordon flew the flag for the USA in the car category, but he never managed to improve on his third place in 2009 despite ten spectacular stage wins.

Forgot to mention the organisers fucked up and an oversight saw them have to cut the final stage mileage in half.
Organisers have had to cut the final stage of the 2020 Dakar Rally short due to construction of a gas pipeline being in the way.

The bizarre oversight in what is the first Dakar to be held in Saudi Arabia, as reported by Spanish sports newspapers Marca and AS, has seen the length of the final special stage slashed.

The timed distance to be covered between Haradh to Qiddiya will now be only 167km, less than half the originally scheduled 374km.
“We had to change the beginning of the stage, but the part that remains is the most complicated navigation".

Monte Carlo: Ott Tänäk had a huge crash yesterday but is okay. Not sure how he got off there.

Ogier leads in his first run in the Toyota.

It looked his splitter hit the ground after the initial hard compression and sent him skating off.

That was a huge crash for Tanak.... they were both lucky to walk away from that.

For those that have not seen it:

After day 2 Ogier has dropped to second behind Elfyn Evans with Neuville 3rd. 6.4 secs cover the three.

THIERRY NEUVILLE TAKES RALLYE MONTE-CARLO VICTORY

Neuville came from an overnight day 2 3rd position to blitz the final day, winning every stage and finishing 12.6 seconds clear. Evans had gone into the final day leading Neuville and Ogier.

Both new to Toyota team-mates Elfyn Evans and Sébastien Ogier were powerless to withstand Neuville’s charge. Ogier, winner in Monte-Carlo for the past six seasons, overhauled overnight leader Evans in the closing power stage to claim second by 1.7sec.... but could not match Neuville.

Neuville ensured a maximum five bonus points by winning the live TV Wolf Power Stage by 0.016sec from Ogier, who took four points. Teemu Suninen was third in a Ford Fiesta to collect three points, Evans took two points in fourth and Esapekka Lappi took the final point in a Fiesta, also finishing the rally 4th overall.

Toyota's teenage sensation Kalle Rovanperra took a well deserved 5th place on his WRC debut, finishing ahead of Seb Loeb 6th..

It was the first time since 2011 that someone not called Sebastian had not won. In fact it is only the 4th time since 2002 that has happened.

Rally Sweden is next up in 3 weeks time (13/2)

Great win by Neuville, coming from behind like that. But what an effort from Evans! He'll be an underdog this year.

Rally Sweden looks to go ahead as planned, but it will hardly be a winter rally. I hate that Rally Sweden looks to be in doubt every year nowadays

Just watched the live coverage of the Power Stage, and gotta say that Hyundai's team manager Andrea Adamo is the best interview. :haha:

*before stage*

"I'm too Italian to feel anything but panic right now"

*after stage*

tears in eyes, can't get a word out: "yes it's a great day, I'm very happy", runs away to celebrate with the team in true Italian extravaganze

:haha:

Global warming sucks ass. There hasn't been a proper week of winter all season. January was about 10 degrees warmer than normal here...

The Historic Rally wont go ahead and has been cancelled. :annoyed:

Maybe I am reading it wrong but it seems like they only have 180klms of special stage , and there will be a lot of repeating. "Friday’s stages will be repeated on Saturday. Two of the four stages on those days will be in Norway, with Sweden suffering the most cut mileage in the revised itinerary. The Likenas test is the only stage on Sunday, the second running of which will be the Power Stage."

I hope 'Colis's Crest is still in the route. It wouldnt be the same without that. Not that it will be the usual Rally Sweden by all accounts. A shame because Sweden is usually one that I go out of my way to watch. A must see event for me. :sorrow:

How cut up are the stages going to be by the time the repeats come around?

A shame it has happened but I guess what they have at least gives us some rally. I guess its one of those things where at least the organisers of personnel have fucked. Nature has.

Same here. We had one day only a bit snow at a few places. And that's it. We can hardly call it winter.
