Bottom post of the previous page:

Forced to wait for his assistance team after breaking a wheel, Fernando Alonso has finally resumed racing. However, he has lost 2 hours and 30 minutes. Must have been more than a broken wheel methinks as they would simply put on a spare for that
Giniel de Villiers has won his first stage victory of the year in stage 2, but Terranova the cars leads overall, from Sainz and Al Attiya.

Rankings: https://gaps.dakar.com/2020/dakar/aso/ukie

Toby Price who was leading the bikes after stage 1 had a bad stage 2 getting into navigations problems from his first out starting position. After stage 2 Sam Sutherland leads the bikes.... Price is now 9th some 7 minutes plus behind.

Same link for all category rankings .... just follow the category links on the page

Whoops, forgot to update after stage 3.... Sainz held the overall lead and won the stage with Alonso finishing a creditable 4th.... ahead of the sister Toyota of Al Attiya.

Stage 3 highlights

Stage 4

Stephane Peterhansel became the fourth different driver to top a stage in the 2020 Dakar Rally, as Nasser Al-Attiyah halved the gap to leader Carlos Sainz.

Wednesday's Neom - Al-'Ula stage included the marathon's longest timed test so far at 281 miles, which was split by an 80km neutralised zone, and was completed by Peterhansel in just over four hours.

The 13-time Dakar champion was sixth in the starting order, but his X-raid Mini buggy was the third car to arrive at the finish line and he clocked the fastest time at all but the first waypoint.

Sainz looked on course to minimise the damage from having to open the road, but gave up over four minutes in the final 60 miles of the test.

This means Toyota driver Al-Attiyah, who had started the day as Sainz's closest rival and was a close second to Peterhansel through the stage, now trails the leader by just three minutes.

Al-Attiyah had received a three-minute penalty after Tuesday's stage as he was adjudged to have impeded Sainz.

The Wednesday stage win has elevated Peterhansel to third place overall behind his two fellow Dakar champions, with his gains coming at the expense of Mini driver Orlando Terranova and Toyota's Yazeed Al-Rajhi.

Al-Rajhi had been fastest at the opening waypoint but ended the stage 11m30s off Peterhansel's pace.

Yet this was enough for Al-Rajhi to overhaul Terranova by three seconds in the general classification.

Dakar 2020's surprise package - Mathieu Serradori - continued to keep the pace in his Century buggy, finishing fifth on the day and retaining sixth place overall.

He outpaced Al-Attiyah's Toyota Gazoo team-mates Giniel de Villiers and Bernhard ten Brinke, who make up the top eight in the standings.

Double Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso, who had entered the day 32nd overall after lengthy damage repairs on Monday, finished 26 minutes off the pace in his Toyota.

Elsewhere, Erik van Loon rolled and a lengthy stoppage for two-time champion Nani Roma, who is contesting his first Dakar with German marque Borgrward.

At the half way stage now with a rest day ahead.

Sainz still leading the cars, although Mr Dakar won the latest stage. Alonso has clawed his way back from about 60th after he hit a rock and broke his suspension, now running 16th although his times are close to the leaders. He is the leading Dakar Rookie atm.

Brabeck leads the bikes with Toby Price having had a bad stage yesterday losing a tyre and 25 minutes to the leader, before being helped by another rider giving Price the wheel and tyre from his bike. Sam Sutherland is already out having crashed heavily and broken bones in his shoulder.

Stage 6 highlights.... cars

Sainz Mini now leads Al Attiya by nearly 8 minutes.

Stage 8 cancelled for motorbikes and quads

The death of Paulo Gonçalves during today's stage 7 between Riyadh and Wadi Al-Dawasir has left the entire Dakar, especially the bikers, in shock. Paulo, a beloved figure of the rally, was immensely respected by both veterans and less experienced competitors who admired and were inspired by him. After meeting the riders and making a decision together with the entire motorbike family, the organisers have decided to cancel stage 8 for the motorbikes and quads category, which was supposed to take place on a loop course around Wadi Al-Dawasir, in order to give the riders time to mourn their friend.

The entire Dakar family will come together to pay tribute to Paulo at the briefing this evening.

RIP Paulo Goncalves.

Just to add both Sainz and Brabec continue to lead the car and bike divisions today, Sainz now leading Al Attiya by 10 minutes, Alonso doing top 10 pace and now up to 15th. In the Bikes, Brabec almost 25 minutes clear of Quintanilla. Price lost a bit more time to the leaders today and is now 4th nearly 29 minutes back. He is the leading KTM rider, the KTM now surely about to end its 18 year winning streak.

Going well in the stage last night ( my time)..He was 2nd fastest overall on stage 8, several minutes faster than Sainz and Al Attiya, and almost back into the top 10 having dropped to 60 something when he lost 2 and a half hours on day 2 with a wheel and wishbone breakage.

2nd place on stage 8 was even more impressive given the fact Nando had a puncture mid stage. He of course did benefit from the lead drivers having to go first on an especially bad day, given the cancellation of the bikes for the stage. It meant the first cars had no tyre tracks of any sort to follow. That is why Sainz and AL Attiya were down the order, both finishing out of the top 15, being careful not to hit hidden rocks etc.

With the bikes being back in the running today it wont be so bad for the car leaders who will have tracks to follow

Its getting tight at the top in the cars, not so much in the bikes, with Toby Price now saying 2020 was not his year. Brabec now leads by over 20 minutes with 3 stages to go.
In the cars Nasser Al-Attiyah has all but caught long time leader leader Carlos Sainz on Stage 9, which was won by Stephane Peterhansel.

Only 24 seconds separate Sainz and Al-Attiyah with three stages to run after Carlos got lost and then suffered a tyre problem, while Peterhansel approximately halved his deficit to his X-raid team-mate to 6:38s overall. Alonso has moved into the overall top 10 for the first time in his Dakar debut after setting the ninth fastest time on the day,

Forgot to mention it yesterday, but in the credit where credit is due dept. we had a rare occurence on Stage 8.... Mathieu Serradori (winner of Stage 8 ) became the first amateur driver to win a Dakar stage in 32 years, on the 477km special stage around Wadi Al Dawasir.

8 Mathieu Serradori FRA Century +1:24:20
9 Yasir Seaidan KSA Mini +2:35:35
10 Fernando Alonso ESP Toyota +3:17:23

Alonso will struggle to go higher without someone ahead having major problems, being over 40 minutes down on the next car ahead.

Stage 10, a marathon stage, runs from Haradh to Shubaytah with 534 competitive kilometres and another 74km of liaison.

Alonso has a big double rollover on Dakar Stage 10.

Fernando Alonso's Toyota Hilux has been damaged in a double rollover during the 10th stage of the Dakar Rally.
The Spaniard hit a dune at an awkward angle two kilometres into the 534-kilometre test, pitching he and Marc Coma's Hilux into a roll.

The car landed back on its wheels after two full revolutions, with initial fears that it would be too damaged to continue without a lengthy wait on outside assistance.

It is understood that Alonso and Coma have since removed the car's windscreen and have continued unaided, despite the suspension also taking a big hit.

The accident has cost the pair 1h08m in the first sector.

Im sure there will be videos online soon.

On the bikes, Joan Barreda grabbed his first victory in this year’s rally on completion of a shortened stage in Shubaytah, but still trails his team-mate Ricky Brabec, who again increased his lead in the general standings. 7 different nationalities were riding the first 10 bikes to finish the day’s special.

In the car category, after the so called marathon stage, the race lead has been opened up from 24 seconds by Carlos Sainz again, following the navigational mishaps of Nasser Al-Attiyah and Stéphane Peterhansel. He now leads by over 18 minutes from Al Attiyah.

The Haradh - Shubaytah test was due to feature 534 kilometres of timed competition in the Rub' Al Khali desert, but worsening weather conditions forced the organisers to end the competitive running early.

Citing "strong wind gusts" and all safety resources being "already mobilised", the Dakar declared the results of the stage at the 223km mark in the car competition.

After his problems with his rollover Alonso has dropped back to 14th overall.

Just two stages to go. Fingers crossed for Carlos who has led from about day 2 or 3 and deserves another win.

Getting into the latter stage of the event now, and, despite Peterhansel and Al Attiyah taking the top two steps in stage 11, Carlos Sainz came in third so maintains an overall lead of just over 10 minutes from Al Attiyah with Peterhansel another 6 seconds behind. Just over 400 klms left with stage 12 before the finish.

Of note Mr Dakar, Stéphane Peterhansel scored his 80th Dakar stage win today. Mr Dakar, who is a six-time champion on a bike and seven-time champion in a car, has won 33 and 47 specials in these classes, respectively. He is the most prolific competitor in Dakar history by far. Trucker Vladimir Chagin, with 63 stage wins, is a distant second.

In the bikes a few threw caution to the wind in a last ditch effort, and Pablo Quintanilla rose to the occasion with a super-aggressive ride that earned him the stage win but never came close to loosening Ricky Brabec's iron grip.... Brabec cruised home in 10th on the stage, but retains a strong lead of almost 14 minutes.

In his (Brabec's) own words
"You know, today was a big distance. The mileage was definitely a concern. I rode about 70%. I was just trying to conserve the body and the bike. I'm happy we made it to here, so we'll go back to the bivouac, prepare for tomorrow and have a good starting position for tomorrow, and not necessarily push, but just get to the finish line tomorrow. Tomorrow could be a really big day for us, so we'll keep the positive vibes for sure."
He is looking a solid bet to be the first Murican to take Dakar outright honours in any category.

A name for the future though is Manxman Jamie McCanney, the young guy on his first Dakar and second ever rally is doing top 10 times and running in the top 15 with a good chance at best rookie honours.

A short Dakar profile from a day or so ago.

DAKAR 2020

Sainz wins Car division
Brabec wins Bikes .

American biker Ricky Brabec put an end to Honda's 31-year drought and the 1year winning streak of KTM,

Image

Image
Carlos Sainz took his third title in his third different car.

Carlos Sainz (Mini XRaid) has won the Dakar Rally for the third time while 2019 champion Nasser Al-Attiyah successfully saw off Stephane Peterhansel in the battle for second. Carlos was also a Dakar champion in 2010 in a Volkswagen and 2018 in a Peugeot.

Fernando Alonso rounded off his Dakar debut with a fourth on the final stage in his Toyota Gazoo Hilux and 13th overall. He was the best rookie finisher in cars.

Casey Currie gave America another reason to celebrate in the SSV race.

Ignacio Casale took back the throne in quads.

Andrey Karginov extended the victorious streak of the Kamaz trucks.

Coming from three consecutive victories, Eduard Nikolayev looked every bit the big favourite to win the 42nd edition of the rally. However, the defending champion was off the pace from the beginning and ended up withdrawing due to serious mechanical troubles with his Kamaz truck. The Russian maker showed the depth of its team, starting with 2014 champion Andrey Karginov. The 43-year-old bounced back from an uninspired performance in the opening stage to steal the show with seven stage wins and an infernal pace that left his rivals —and teammates— in the dust, to the point that runner-up Anton Shibalov finished over 42 minutes behind the leader

234 out of the 342 vehicles that started the rally in Jeddah (68.4%) appear in the final general classification: 96 motorbikes, 12 quads, 57 cars, 29 SSVs and 40 trucks.

A further 22 vehicles withdrew from the race but reached Qiddiya under Dakar Experience rules.

A first for America
And they won two categories this year....

Ricky Brabec became the first American to win the Dakar, beating SSV driver Casey Currie to the punch by a matter of minutes. It took 42 years to see the Stars and Stripes fluttering atop the podium, even though many Americans had come close to victory before. Back in 1985, Chuck Stearns finished sixth overall with six stage wins under his belt, while Danny Laporte was runner-up to Peterhansel in 1992. A few years later, Jimmy Lewis, now working as Brabec's trainer, took third place in 2000, followed by Chris Blaisa in fourth place in 2006. Robby Gordon flew the flag for the USA in the car category, but he never managed to improve on his third place in 2009 despite ten spectacular stage wins.
