15-Car FIA GT World Cup Entry List Released

FIA releases 15-car entry list for November’s GT World Cup at Macau.

A total of 15 cars and five GT3 manufacturers are set to take part in next month’s FIA GT World Cup in Macau, with the entry list for the Nov. 15-18 event at the Guia Circuit having been released on Thursday.

While featuring the return of Audi, BMW, Mercedes-AMG, Porsche and the addition of Nissan, it marks a decrease from the 20-car, seven manufacturer entry in last year’s accident-filled event.

Reigning champion Edoardo Mortara has been confirmed alongside inaugural winner Maro Engel in the three-car GruppeM Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 effort, which also sees newly crowned Blancpain GT Series champion Raffaele Marciello also in the lineup.

2016 champion Laurens Vanthoor, meanwhile, is set to return in a Manthey Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R with Earl Bamber as his teammate.

Audi will have three supported entries on the grid, with Robin Frijns and Dries Vanthoor, who is set for his Macau debut, set to pilot WRT Speedstar-entered Audi R8 LMS cars and Christopher Haase placed with Audi Sport Team Rutronik.

BMW, meanwhile, will be represented by a single Schnitzer-entered BMW M6 GT3 for Augusto Farfus.

KCMG’s previously announced three-car Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 effort, meanwhile, will be spearheaded by Oliver Jarvis, who makes his return to Macau for the first time since winning the Formula 3 event in 2007.

The Briton will be joined by Alexandre Imperatori and Tsugio Matsuda in the Hong Kong-based team’s effort.

There will be additional local talent on the grid with Adderly Fong set to drive a Zun Motorsport Crew-entered Audi and Darryl O’Young at the wheel of a Craft Bamboo Racing Porsche, in a two-car operation that will mark Porsche Young Professional Mathieu Jaminet’s Macau debut.

As in recent years, the event will be run over a 12-lap qualifying race and 18-lap main race to determine the FIA GT World Champion.

WTCR - Wild at home: Six newcomers on Macau WTCR Entry

Six wildcard racers from Macau will get their moment in the spotlight when they contest the final rounds of the 2018 WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO in the Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China from 15-18 November.

André Couto, winner of the Macau Grand Prix in 2000 and a former World Touring Car driver, has been nominated by the TCR China promoter – at the invitation of WTCR promoter Eurosport Events – for the street event as the representative of title-winning entrant MacPro Racing Team.

Meanwhile, Filipe de Souza, Lo Kai Fung, Lam Kam San, Kevin Wing Kin Tse andRui Valente were among a number of drivers to apply to the Macanese ASN, the AAMC, to take part in the three WTCR OSCARO races, which make up the legendary Suncity Group Macau Guia Race. Following a rigorous assessment process, they were selected and their inclusion on the entry list, along with Couto, has been approved by the FIA.

De Souza and Lam will race the Audi RS 3 LMS for Champ Motorsport, Lo – who races as Billy Lo – will drive one of the German machines for TSRT Zuver Team, while Valente will line up in a Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR for PCT-IXO Models Racing Team. Couto is entered by MacPro Racing Team in a Honda Civic Type R TCR. Teamwork Motorsport will run Tse in an Audi RS 3 LMS.

François Ribeiro, Head of Eurosport Events, said: “Although we always managed to welcome one or two drivers from Macau during the TC1 era, the cost and scarcity of the former WTCC cars did not make it easy for local drivers to join the Macau grid. Given the amount of TCR cars running in Asia, the scenario is now very different from the TC1 regulations. We have received around 20 enquiries from local drivers but we obviously could not accommodate them all. As well as counting as the Guia Race, WTCR Race of Macau is the deciding event of the 2018 season with prestigious FIA titles up for grabs. We have therefore worked closely with the FIA, the Macau ASN and the TCR China promoter to ensure the drivers handed wildcard status are ready for the high-level competition they will face, and will be capable of qualifying within the lowered 105 per cent limit. With 31 cars on the grid, the Macau finale promises to be a great spectacle with all the action live on television around the world.”

The venue of the closing round of the inaugural WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO, Circuito da Guia challenges and thrills in equal measure. Blending twisting turns and narrow blasts with long, wide-open straights and sweeping corners, the demanding 6.120-kilometre layout also contains a plethora of gradient and surface changes. WTCR racer Tom Coronel describes Macau as the “coolest track on the planet”, record nine-time Guia Race winner Rob Huff calls it “magical”, while Esteban Guerrieri says it’s the most “intense lap” in racing.

Frijns Quickest in Free Practice 1 in Macau

Robin Frijns tops time charts for Audi in opening Free Practice in Macau…

Robin Frijns led the way in the opening Free Practice for this weekend’s FIA GT World Cup in Macau, in a strong early showing from Audi.

The Dutchman laid down a best lap of 2:18.588 in his No. 66 Team WRT Speedstar Audi R8 LMS to go quickest in the 30-minute scheduled session, which was extended following a red flag for an incident involving Dries Vanthoor.

Frijns was 0.129 seconds quicker than defending race winner Edoardo Mortara in the No. 1 GruppeM Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3, with Macau debutant Christopher Haase third, also in an Audi.

Augusto Farfus and Earl Bamber completed the top-five, for BMW Team Schnitzer and Manthey Racing, respectively.

Apart from multiple stoppages at the Melco Hairpin, Vanthoor’s brush with the wall was the only incident.

It brought out a red flag with five minutes remaining, with the 20-year-old Belgian able to bring his Audi back to the pits under power with minimal damage.

Free Practice 2 is set for Friday at 12:30 p.m. local time, followed by qualifying in the afternoon.

Ticktum takes pole for tomorrows qualifying race with a record 2:09.99.
Ilott was 2nd. Ericsson managed 4th but crashed on his last lap when he came across another crashed car.
Schu only managed 9th in the end.
