1968 Jackie Stewart Jarama F2 Post-Practice Crash

#1

Post by Jesper Hvid »

Yeah, it sounds strange, but Jackie's 1968 season was complicated by a fracture to his wrist, which he sustained in an accident after practice in the Spanish F2 GP. He had to wear a plaster cast for 4 months.

Here you can see part of it:

Here is the story of the crash, click to enlarge. The text in italics is by Eric Dymock who co-wrote this book, the rest is Jackie's own recollections:

BTW, I realise the innuendo of the last sentence, but it was his wrist that was injured, and not anything else...

Oh yeah, and BTW I'd like to see any pics that anyone might have, even though I don't hold too high hopes...

In the following Dutch F1 GP at Zandvoort, Stewart had to have help slipping into the cockpit, but he still went on to win the race despite excruciating pain, which worsened as the season went on:

(For some reason, I thought the crash happened at Kyalami in the SA F1 GP. Probably old age setting in.)

Another one showing more of the cast. Taken at some point in the 1968 season:

Well, if you feel that way about Jackie, you can look forward to a unique interview from a 1969 vinyl record which we are currently grabbing to mp3, and which we will post in the next 2-3 weeks, depending on the speed of the postal service.

@Jesper Hvid , it seems that the crash you were looking for was already posted here (but misidentified as 1967, where he ALSO crashed in practice): viewtopic.php?f=26&t=86&p=113552&hilit= ... ma#p113552

I found a supporting Motor Sport magazine article with the same photo, plus the description about crashing into the posts seems to fit.
