Pedro Lamy - F1 Silverstone testing 1994

#1

Post by MonteCristo »

Was watching a second of WEC from Silverstone, and they mentioned Pedro Lamy.

Anyhow, when I looked him up, I was shocked how young he was in F1. He's only 45 years old now!

His Wikipedia page says: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedro_Lamy
In 1993, Lamy got the chance to race in the final four Formula One races of the season, replacing injured Alessandro Zanardi in the Lotus team. He scored no points, but was signed for the team to drive the full 1994 season. Lamy drove the first four races, before suffering a serious crash in private testing at Silverstone, breaking both legs and wrists and sitting in the sidelines for over a year.
Pics of aftermath or anything? Sounds nasty.

Someone on another forum claimed to see a photo of the car, so we may yet see something.

News report from back in the day: http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/moto ... 38481.html

Quite significant timing, as Karl Wendlinger was still in his induced coma after his Monaco crash, which as you know happened after the double fatality at Imola. Not a good year, 1994.

The guy who saw another picture is our Ian-S.
He wrote about it on the old tbk.fameflame.dk website. He also wrote about it here some years ago (and, also, the supposed magazine where he saw it), but I can't find that post anymore.

Thanks for the report.

Would be very interested to see what was left of the car if an image exists.

Lamy looked like a decent talent, I could see how a shunt like this would impact him.

Here is a picture (allegedly) of Lamy in mid flight. That is what the pic ID claims....

Image

I say allegedly as I feel it might be Zonta, also testing at Silverstone, but in 2000.
It does not look like a Lotus livery to me...but it does look like a BAR.

A bit more research online on that seems to confirm my thoughts.... I found the same image signed by one Ricardo Zonta!

Considering how much work I put into the British crashes side of the Crash Photos Database (~500 crashes), perhaps it's worth consulting as well: http://www.the-fastlane.co.uk/cpdb/cras ... ditid1=240

The car has been rebuilt:
http://www.1994f1.com/2020/01/06/pedro- ... -accident/

They're advertising a book... maybe it contains a photo of the wreck?
I remember someone said he saw a photo in a magazine in 1994. Maybe Autosport, or something like that.

Also, the accident happened in 1994, not 1993.

From what i know there aren't any photos of that particular crash in the book. A friend of mine bought it and told me that's a really good book though, i know that the same author is writing a new book on the rise and fall of Lotus.

So Pedro Lamy was on the straight at Silverstone when the rear wing snapped off at 190mph
The car became airborne and cleared the armco
it then hit a 6" RSJ that was holding the spectator fence
that ripped the front wing off and the front off the nose, the chassis was sheared in 2 around where the wing mirrors mount
all 4 corners were ripped off the car

The crash also ripped the engine and gearbox off the chassis, thou part off the engine is still attached too the tub on the top L/H engine mount.
ripping the engine off also fractured the fuel system so the remainder off the tub with Pedro strapped in was also on fire when it careered down the spectator tunnel that happened too be there at the exact spot the car crashed.
If it had been a GP weekend that tunnel would off been full of people

The whole rear wing assembly was mounted too the gearbox and that was the initial failure point
