Talking of fun versions, I see as some of the blurb going around regarding William Shatner (Star Trek) finally getting to go into space for real was an ironic and seemingly relevant fun cover he once did.....
Rocket Man
Captain Kirk as a singer is so bad he's awesome. He's underrated. I saw him a couple of days ago on "Murdoch Mysteries" playing Mark Twain: he was really good, understated and heartfelt. I saw him in person at a convention a few years ago and he was magnetic. I confess I was moved by his recent trip into space.
Always a favourite song of mine back in the day..... Billy Bragg was a bit of a hero figure to me.
This is a more recent live version.... nice to see at 1:48 he makes a tribute the Kirsty MacColl who covered the song... she was killed by a millionaires speedboat whilst on holiday with her sons. She saved her son from the boat (which was in a prohibited area) and was herself hit and killed.
When she originally did the song in 1985 it was a Top Ten single (for Kirsty MacColl). Billy Bragg wrote a couple of extra verses for the song just for Kirsty. Since her death whenever Bill plays the song he now includes the extra verses.
And this was a great cover. Kirsty MacColl. RIP

When I was a kid and I'd start singing a song, my mum used to say to me, 'That's an old one that someone has covered, it's not as good as when ....... did it.' My word that used to annoy me at the time. Then my daughter started to listen to music and I found myself saying the exact same thing to her

I think I'd do the same with Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". I've heard a lot of great covers, but don't touch my Leonard!
Top 80 Songs You Didn't Know Were Covers and Their Originals
Well-known songs which everybody knows but not everybody realised they are not originals but the covers of their often less famous, first versions. Which hit songs were created by someone else? Which of them surprised you the most?

OK Instant hand up of honesty here.... this isnt strictly a cover and I did wonder whether it should be here.
No its more a "Mashup". But an interesting one mixing two cultures.
One of which is Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin.
On stage together with Plastic Bertrand, the late 70's Belgian Punk(ish) singer famous for the "Ça Plane pour moi" hit.
Anyway Led Zep and PB perform a rather unique Zeppelin inspired version of Ça Plein pour moi. Its fun and strangely likeable.
