Lucio Dalla and F1, and other racing songs

Post by Starling » 4 months ago

The famous Italian singer and songwriter Lucio Dalla was a fan of F1. He wrote songs about Nuvolari (see also viewtopic.php?f=43&t=8006&p=255016&hili ... la#p255016) and Senna.

"Nuvolari" (Italian lyrics, English translation below): .
I could not find an official video. The background music is typical of Nuvolari's times.

In gara a Verona è davanti a Bordino

Con un tempo d'inferno,
Acqua, grandine e vento
Pericolo di uscire di strada,
A ogni giro un inferno
Ma sbanda striscia è schiacciato
Lo raccolgono quasi spacciato!

Ma Nuvolari rinasce come rinasce il ramarro
Batte Varzi e Campari,
Borzacchini e Fagioli
Brilli-Peri... e Ascari

English translation (Google, reviewed by me):

Nuvolari is short in stature, Nuvolari is below normal
Nuvolari has fifty kilos of bones, Nuvolari has an exceptional body
Nuvolari has hands like claws,
Nuvolari has a talisman against all evils
His gaze is like a hawk for his children,
His muscles are exceptional!

Birds in the air lose their wings when Nuvolari drives by!
When Nuvolari races he’s scary
Because his fierce engine always cuts roaring across the plain

The trees by the road
They crawl across the plain,
Bottle shards on the walls
They melt like mush,
All the dust is blown away!

When Nuvolari races, when Nuvolari drives by,
People come in crowds and lie down on the lawns,
When Nuvolari races, when Nuvolari drives by,
People wait for his arrival for hours and hours
And finally when they hear the noise
They jump to their feet and wave their hands at him,
They cry out words of love to him,
And watch him disappear
Like watching a soldier on horseback
On horseback in the April sky!

Nuvolari is brown in the face, Nuvolari has a sharp profile
Nuvolari's mouth is always closed, he doesn’t care about dying
He runs if it rains, he runs into the sun
For him three plus three always makes seven
With his red Alfa he does what he wants
Into the fire of a hundred lightning bolts!

There’s always an extra number in destiny when Nuvolari races
When Nuvolari drives by, everyone feels his heart is close
In the race at Verona he’s ahead of Bordino

With a hellish weather,
Water, hail and wind
Danger of going off the road,
Hell on every lap
But he swerves, he scrapes, he’s crushed
They pick him up almost dead!

But Nuvolari is reborn as the green lizard is reborn
He beats Varzi and Campari,
Borzacchini and Fagioli
Brilli-Peri… and Ascari.

Ayrton by Lucio Dalla

Potevo fare qualcosa
Dovevo cambiare qualche cosa

E ho deciso, una notte di maggio
In una terra di sognatori
Ho deciso che toccava, forse, a me

E ho capito che Dio mi aveva dato
Il potere di far tornare indietro il mondo
Rimbalzando nella curva insieme a me

English lyrics (from Google, reviewed by me)

My name is Ayrton, and I'm a driver
And I run fast on my track
Though it's not the same track anymore
Though it's not the same thing anymore

Though there are no drivers here
Though there are no flags here
Though there are no cigarettes and beer
That pay you to go on

To go on with what anyway?
To sponsor what, actually?

And as a man it took me years
To understand that it was also my fault
To understand that I had been there too

And I realized it was all fake
I realized a winner is as good as a loser
I realized that people loved me
I could do something
I had to change something

And I decided, one night in May
In a land of dreamers
I decided that maybe it was my turn

And I understood that God had given me
The power to turn back the world
Rebounding into the corner with me

He told me "Close your eyes and rest"
And I closed my eyes

My name is Ayrton, and I'm a driver
And I run fast on my track
Though it's not the same track anymore
Though it's not the same thing anymore

Though there are no drivers here
Though there are no flags here
Though maybe it was all for nothing
Because the circus will just move on

You told me "Close your eyes and rest"
And now I close my eyes

I don't follow NASCAR, but I know who Dale Earnhardt was. There are many tribute songs out there, but this one is my favourite (I love ghost stories): I think it's Toby Keith, "The Last Ride".

Chris Rea...... Johnny needs a Fast Car

Written by Chris for / about Johnny Herbert.

Lyrics:

Johnny needs a fast car
Johnny needs it bad
Johnny always do the best
Whatever johnny has
Johnny needs a fast one
Johnny needs it now
You got to give him something to
Let him show you how
Johnny needs a fast car

Johnny needs a fast car
Johnny needs a break
Johnny don't need good luck
'cause johnny never fakes
He'll always make it look good
You'll always see him smile
Give johnny a few inches
And he'll give you back a mile.

Johnny needs a fast car
Johnny needs a fast car

Tears upon the broken bones
Of luck that never went his way
Bless this one you'll know him by his smile.

Johnny needs a fast car
Johnny needs a fast car...

Chris Rea .... Tribute to Wolfgang Von Trips.

CHRIS REA, himself one of the world`s uncountable Ferraristi, but really with Italian blood in his veins, had given a final, great memorial to the hero of his youth:
LA PASSIONE - the passion.......Wolfgang von Trips. It is a tale of 10-year-old northern boy, the son of a Italian immigrant ice-cream making family, who develops a lifelong obsession with motor racing and especially with the real-life racer Wolfgang Von Trips, who was killed in his sharknose Ferrari 156 at the Monza Grand Prix in 1961.

The movie is partially inspired by the Rea's childhood experience.
Rea commented how "everyone's got a Von Trips in their life ... for some people it happened through football or movies - a day when a boy's empty, innocent mind suddenly has all kinds of new stuff blown into it".
La Passione is a film released by Chris Rea.....

Found a bit more of La Passione
Set in 1961, 'La Passione' tells the story of a young boy whose Italian immigrant father struggles to earn living in England making ice-cream.

His father and uncles tell him of the homeland he comes from, where the 'grey skies turn to blue'.

They sit, in April of 1961, and watch the Monaco Grand Prix on their new black and white television.

The boy is fascinated by what his uncles are telling him and by what he sees;

Distant visions of the shark nosed Ferraris and a racing driver by the name of Wolfgang Von Trips, a German count who lived in a castle.

The boy compares this wonderful scenario with his black and grey life in England.

He becomes filled with awe and wonder of Italy and red cars.
Sent to church after the Grand Prix, the boy has his first 'musical fantasy'.

The basis of most of his fantasies is old news footage of 1961 collages, mixed with surreal images of Italy, Wolfgang Von Trips and the shark nose cars of the period.

The boy steals the family vanilla recipe (which has been handed down from their grandfather), an ingredient of the ice cream his family makes.

He has noticed that girls love the smell of it.

He turns it into a best-selling aftershave, and with his success, he is able to chase his dream of owning and driving a Ferrari and moving back to Italy.

With his success becomes the realisation that it is best to enjoy passions and not let them become obsessions.

Now a prosperous businessman, he returns to England to re-unite with his father and rekindle their relationship.

In this film Shirley Bassey made her screen debut. But not really as an actor, she appears two times singing. First in John's dream singing "Shirley Do You Own A Ferrari?" and dancing with him. Later comes something like a video advertisement for
John's vanilla after shave called "La Passione" and Shirley Bassey singing the song La Passione is the background music for it. But Shirley is visible in the beginning and the end of the spot only, near to an ultralarge after shave flacon and then going down from the stage.

Chris Rea describes his film as "various fantasies of Italy and Ferraris, set to music", so it's a mix of his own real passions: music, cars and Italy. If You're a fan of historical Formula One races or if You're dreaming of driving a Ferrari, this will be the right movie for You. It is mainly about John's dreams about Ferrari's. The music is great of course. Besides of Shirley's songs I want to mention "Girl In A Sportscar" sung by Chris Rea and the instrumental "Horses".

The movie is semi-autobiographical for Chris Rea because in his youth he was working in his family's ice cream parlour in Middlesbrough.

Chris Rea began to work on the movie "La Passione" already in the winter 1993/94 but after some interruptions it has been released 1996. This soundtrack album reached chart position No. 35 (or 43?) in the UK and a 1997 re-release reached No. 130.

After performing 'Disco' La Passione live in the BBC Shirley Bassey special "Viva Diva" 1998, Shirley Bassey told:

I always had that I never meet anybody interesting on airoplane. And one day I was flying from Niece to London and up comes this ..., and like look up and there here's my idol - Chris Rea. So, hmm ha nice. We sat all the way to London and chatting a whale, and he was telling me about this fantasy musical he had written. And I thought no more, we exchanged phone numbers, addresses.

And then, about three / four week later, I received a package with a song in: "La Passione". So I listened to, and I liked, I loved it, and I called to him, and said: "I love this song."......

This is a mainly instrumental track with stills from the movie.

This is awesome! I've loved Chris Rea since "The Road to Hell", but I didn't know about his F1 connections. Above all I'm impressed that he dedicated a song to Herbert, who I might have met in my days of roaming the paddocks (I still have to dig out my pics). This requires a new listening of Chris Rea!

Interesting video interview with Chris Rea about the movie.... plenty of footage of racing, the movie music and tells about the making of the movie, meeting Shirley Bassey on a plane by chance and her involvement subsequently in the film. Getting allowed to use the unseen footage from Von Trips family and museum, the recreation of the only shark nose Ferrari for the movie (which he donated to the Von Trips museum after)

Its half an hour but well worth the watch.

Also if you search La Passione on Youtube you wont find the full movie but you will find lots of individual clips of songs.
